Only caught the second half, but Bayern looked very much in control. Fully deserved, incredible turnaround this season.

Great cross for the goal – perfect example of not rushing, looking and taking your time to get it right. How many times do you just see a lazy cross put in by someone in that position?

If I was famous I’d avoid such areas like the plague.

And interesting Steveo that clubs aren’t turning to managers like Big Sam anymore to get them out of trouble. They’re seemingly happy to go down so long as they play the ‘right way’.

Thing is though Brian, players like clear, simple instructions they are well drilled at. Does Pep sometimes over complicate things? He’s obviously a different manager, but Benitez used to make some pretty odd team selections at times and seemed to make random changes and just expected the players to deliver because they were seen as employees of the club, expected to always deliver. But no one likes change, and whilst it may seem to work in theory that players will immediately adapt, in practice, they don’t. I think managers sometimes see their players as automatons that can be quickly reprogrammed to suit different situations.

Is all this because the game has changed to more attack minded philosophies with bringing and passing it out from the back with less defined positions and more interchangeable options? All of the top clubs bar Liverpool have had problems defensively. Is it becoming a lost art?

Also as Threeps says, I don’t think it helps that Pep can’t do plan B or C very well, just plan A.

It’s interesting to ask *why* Pep overthinks these games. He clearly fears something. What is it? Does he not trust his players? Or is it simply fear of being too bold? I think in the domestic league environment he knows if he loses a game he has ample games to turn it around. So he’s more relaxed and plays his usual swashbuckling game. But he doesn’t in the CL, particularly in knockout games, particularly when the knockout games go down to one leg.
Indeed I think the knockout games going down to one leg was the worst possible mentality for Pep as he knew he didn’t have the luxury of another game if the first one went wrong. So he overcompensated even more than usual.

Think that’s where Solksjaer is limited Ed. He’s good at coaching & developing youngsters perhaps, and going on runs, but in big moments, he’s not quite got the presence to command and transfix a dressing room.

Maybe Brian, but no matter how well run the club is, if Messi did become available it would take some serious restraint not to be tempted to go for him, particularly given how much the club wants the CL.

Would Messi cost that much at this stage of his career though Steveo? If he does leave, I couldn’t see him going anywhere but rejoining Pep at City. Also they want the CL badly.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Messi is looked at Brian for City. They may see him as a last roll of the dice to nail the CL trophy, what with Pep at the club too. As I’ve just posted on the other thread, City are at the point in the big club cycle where they may start getting increasingly erratic in their attempts to stay/get back to the top.

The cycle of big clubs:
1) Fresh intelligent strategy, slow and patient build up with top manager installed. New young talented players start making the first team and/or are brought in.
2) Club starts to dominate and win more and more, big trophies start coming in.
3) Manager and/or big players start to retire or leave.
4) Club starts to spend fortunes on new players to stay at the top.
5) Club continues to decline. More money thrown at new players, with a string of short lived managerial appointments.
6) Club operates in an increasingly rudderless fashion and panics. Jose Mourinho called in. Moderate success but rot continues.
7) Club brings back a still young former player to try and bring the good times back and get back to basics. Moderate success.
8) Rinse and repeat.
