Surprised there’s only 20 extra live TV games this season to help boost revenues.

Man Utd certainly need to pull off a signing soon.

Brian, undoubtedly football is now seen as an entertainment product in the same way as a music concert is, hence the price for a ticket is about the same for both and within those you’ll obviously have a corporate element. But we can’t be surprised that clubs are increasingly pivoting towards their global TV fan base. Expect the game 39 proposal (to play league games abroad) to resurface at some point.

Sean, it’s still a nice sum, but a club is much less dependent on it now I think, and it is now the smallest of the main revenue earners of the club. Via the football finance blogger Swiss Ramble, Liverpool’s 2019 revenue breakdown is as follows:
Broadcasting: £260.8 mill
Commercial: £188 mill
Match day: £84.2 mill
Total: £533 millSo match day revenue accounts for just 15.8% of the clubs revenue now, though that percentage drops further if you add any player sale profits.

Just suppose this is about power and
Messi just wanting to have the say over the president, and suppose he gets his way. It won’t really change Barca’s plight at the moment. They are a club in decline who have not just been beaten in the CL for the last 3 years, they’ve been humiliated. It will be some years before they’re dominating again in the way that they used to. So what does Messi really gain? He’ll still be at a club in decline and transition. So I still think it could happen, though it will drag out big time. Also I think Barca have had their money’s worth out of him. And more fool them on blowing it on ill thought out signings over recent years._____________________________

Match day revenue has been making less and less of a proportion of the total revenue of a club in recent years, to most of the premier league clubs anyway. If the fans keep paying for the TV subscriptions, which they will, then it will be of little interest to the top clubs to change anything. Clubs in more trouble are going to have to look at things like more commercial deals.

Well that’s it Adlab, is it really worth Barca digging their heels in with regards to Messi? Yes they’ll want some kind of fee but if he really does want to go, some compromise will have to be reached. Could they really justify a £200 mill fee for a 33 year old?

29th August 2020 at 9:09 pm in reply to: FA Community Shield 2020 – Liverpool V Arsenal – Saturday 4:30 BT Sport #162673Didn’t see the game, just catching up now. Arteta is increasingly cutting a very calm and intelligent figure on the touchline. I have held back on my predictions as I think they’ll still be some significant transfer activity yet. But I have increasingly been thinking that Arsenal wouldn’t have a bad season and I’d certainly have them and Spurs ahead of Man Utd in the top 4 race at the moment.
As for Liverpool, I suspect many of us Liverpool fans have developed a sixth sense over the years with how we will perform in each game. Klopp can obviously say it’s still preseason and we’re still looking for fitness and freshness and to some degree it’s a fair point. All the good ingredients are still at the club, it’s obviously a question of how the motivation levels are. I think all top sides have to freshen up every year and I think Liverpool need to. They can still have a good season and Klopp can always get them fired up, but as I’ve been saying for some time, I’d like to see some more quality in the midfield/attacking third. I just think we need some more sparks in the side. It’s all very workmanlike which is great, but we seemed to struggle to break teams down last season so we need other options.

28th August 2020 at 3:03 pm in reply to: Harry “come on then if you think you’re hard enough” McGuire #161794Ed, I think given the guilty verdict and his reputation being on the line, he had to come out and respond to it. Regardless of what happened, what we do know is, as Adlab has said, a large amount of alcohol was consumed which never tends to end particularly well. There is probably a degree of truth on both sides, but with all the alcohol consumed, it will make establishing exactly what happened pretty difficult.

28th August 2020 at 1:42 pm in reply to: Harry “come on then if you think you’re hard enough” McGuire #161787Doesn’t mean his body language isn’t worth examining though Ed. It can be quite useful to look at it when you have conflicting reports.

Quite possibly Adlab, but if so neither side will come out of this with much dignity and Barca might as well formally rename themselves as “Messi FC”.

Somewhat agree HH, it may also upset the balance of the team with KDB. But by Messi simply being available, it is acting as a huge temptation to City, and many fall foul of temptation, though it would undoubtedly help put City more on the global footballing map. So it makes more commercial sense than football sense, and it depends on what City want to prioritise. I can still see it happening because City are in a transition after a period of dominance, and many top clubs act increasingly erratically in their attempts to stay at the top. It’s just the sort of thing many clubs do in such times. But I think City would be his only destination in Europe, otherwise he’ll stay at Barca or return to Argentina.

Was thinking that before Ed, could you imagine how quickly the Messi shirts would sell out at the new club?? Plus just the focus it would bring of having the best player in the world in the team.

No doubt Nine, but sometimes you can overdo the clear out and clear out just for the sake of it. Do they have know who is going to replace these players?

Looks like Barca are pressing the hard reset button which has been coming following three disastrous CL results over the last 3 years. Bold move, but do they have a clear and coherent plan? Or are they just trying to show a reaction or make a statement?

Yes Bayern are a very professional club. I never doubted they’d win yesterday. Their teams tend to be full of cool heads and their goal typified that. They knew they’d score eventually, and were prepared to wait. PSG may have their moments but they still look like what they are: a team of individuals.
My favourite Liverpool performance over the last few years, although not necessarily the most entertaining, was the 3-1 win away to Bayern a few seasons ago. It was a very calm, professional, patient, clinical and ultimately Bayern performance against Bayern.
