Very little being mentioned about Spurs & Arsenal. Think they could have good seasons. Don’t quite get why Man Utd are being so heavily talked up. Unless they get Sancho, can’t see them doing much. I think Chelsea will continue to blow hot and cold. City and Liverpool still the ones to beat I think, though all depends on where their focus levels are at.

Our culture increasingly promotes this kind of behaviour so is anyone really surprised by it? If you look at outlets like the Ladbible they’ll be woke on some things and then joke about incidents like this and no doubt many will call them legends. They’ll just get a slap on the wrist but it won’t change anything.

We’ll see Nine. I’m yet to be convinced about Lampard the manager. Also both Man Utd & Chelsea were fortunate that Leicester collapsed last season.

I think our greatest enemy this season will be ourselves and so long as we refocus, I think we’ll be ok.

Who is buying/green lighting all these players at Chelsea? The board or the manager? You need a strong commanding manager in that dressing room if this is all to work well, along with a strong identity.

Can’t work out how we’ll do this season. Whilst in theory everything is still in place for us to do well, I don’t know if the worry is justified over the lack of additions together with no crowd and whether it’s a recipe to make us turn stale. I just hope some fans can come back in soon. It’s one thing to adapt to having no fans as a temporary measure, but quite another to have it more permanently.

We’ll see. I think the 8-2 result was the final straw for him and he’s really quite fed up now. Yes things could lift a bit, but at the same time it’s now alerted prospective suitors to prepare their offers next season for him.

Don’t know Sean, a change in president is not going to suddenly turn Barca around. Why not have another shot at big trophies somewhere else before he retires?

Mav, I think too much damage has been done in his opinion though, and will now undoubtedly still leave at the end of the season.

Absolutely no love lost here from Messi…whole thread worth reading.
Lionel Messi to Goal: "I wasn't happy and I wanted to leave. I have not been allowed this in any way and I will STAY at the club so as not to get into a legal dispute. The management of the club led by Bartomeu is a disaster". 🚨 #FCB #Messi #Barcelona

Ed, you couldn’t help but laugh if, following City’s successful appeal of alleged overspending, they then in effect appeal to sign Messi for a nice tidy sum.

Ed, as you say I think Sancho is potentially the difference between you fighting it out for 4th and propelling you to even greater heights. And I think the club obviously realises that, which is why, given the window not closing until next month, you’d still expect Man Utd to keep pushing for him. You really really need somebody to take the club up a notch.

That’s more rumour mill via “The Record” but probably hints at the kind of deal being looked at.

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has reportedly agreed a five-year deal with City Football Group worth £623m that will see him spend three seasons at Manchester City before joining MLS side New York City FC.

Ed, yes it’s a good point about Ronaldo and Juve. And let’s not forget that though Barca have been in decline, they still have some very good players including Messi in the side yet they’ve been humiliated in the CL in the last few years. I remember talking to some Utd friends when Ronaldo was at the club and they always used to say it was Rooney who was the key player in that relationship because of the work he used to put in and that kind of follows Threeps point above about work rate in the team. That has ultimately been Liverpool’s biggest part of their success over recent seasons that minimised the mistakes in the Liverpool side and saw them get over the line game after game. As it is with most successful teams. So we should be wary of that. Yes of course Messi will improve them both on and off the pitch, but as Threeps rightly alludes to, successful teams are built on workrate first and flair second.

Well they’re in a kind of transition Brian. There are a few players coming to the end now and they are still struggling in the CL. I think they would welcome a lift and Messi certainly fits that bill. As I’ve said though, I think there would be positives and negatives over signing him even if commercially it’s a no brainer. Would I sign Messi if I was the City owner? If the manager genuinely feels he can fit him in the side with no sacrifices to the other players or dynamic of the dressing room then probably so. But you do tend to need to build a team around Messi. But I just think commercially it will be too good for the owners to turn down.

Nine, yes it may well be one mid life crisis signing that would still be worth it and why I think it will probably happen.

I think Messi would be City’s mid life crisis signing. It would undoubtedly lift them and make them feel good about themselves even if it didn’t exactly translate perfectly on the pitch. Many clubs do such things when they’re starting to decline. Chelsea bought Schevchenko, Torres and Morata after periods of success.

I remember in the early days of FSG the bemoaning of the “moneyball” strategy of buying young talent and then selling it on at a huge profit later on. But there has been very little mention of “moneyball” on Liverpool forums in recent years. Yet it is still arguably very much a part of the clubs strategy – let’s not forget it worked perfectly when Liverpool sold Coutinho to Barca for a huge profit which in turn allowed the club to buy Van Dijk & Alisson. So has the moneyball strategy ever gone away? I’m not sure it has.
