I think Arteta is probably an intelligent reader of the game, hence he suited to being a good no.2 at City. But to be a manager, particularly at a big club looking to move up the league, you have to have charisma, personality and authority to lead and galvanize your team together and give them the belief you know what you’re doing and are thus worthy of following, particularly when you have increasingly powerful players in the dressing room. Initially I thought Arteta was showing some of those qualities, albeit in a somewhat more modest way. But that in itself may indicate what the main problem is – he isn’t brave enough or flamboyant enough to coach and play more expansively because he fears he won’t get the results. So he’s clinging to a more cautious and safe approach.

Whilst as Threeps says you can’t blame it all on goalkeepers (no crowds are having a huge impact), I think things like social media have skyrocketed the hype associated with some players, and quite a few, quite simply, have started to believe their own hype and have thus taken their eye off the ball. What further compounds the problem is because there is a dearth of good players, more average ones are commanding transfer fees they can never live up to, and so this further screws the pressure on to them. And when you put these young kids in a huge limelight in front of a global audience and media with social media instantly reacting to it, you can’t be surprised when many start to crumble. It’s all very sad really, but it no doubt helps create a pantomime of it all and so keeps the masses entertained in another way.

Van Dijk a loss no doubt, but he has taken his eye off the ball in my opinion in recent months. Fabinho has looked ok at CB. Gomez now has the perfect opportunity to step up. Some cover in January needed, but I won’t be panicking just yet, though our midfield is probably going to have to press more to help compensate.

I thought these 1 cm offsides were supposed to be given a bit more leeway now? Here’s an idea, you let the game be refereed by the eye – like the game was designed to be refereed because it exists in something called the real world, and if a video checks there’s been a howler, you correct it. Get these bureaucrats out our game…

Indeed Adlab, and Utd paid it. The problem as I say with overpaying is that if the player doesn’t justify the fee it adds huge pressure and attention on him.

This was always going to be a big problem for him when £80 million was paid for him. Being English too, he was always going to be more in the spotlight and any mistake, even minor, would be highlighted. The size of the fee helped neither Man Utd nor Maguire.

Cant really be bothered with England anymore, but for crying out loud, we can do better than Southgate…I’d even take Eddie Howe above him.

“Over 28 years ago there were equally concerned reactions to the formation of the PL and that turned out fine.”
Did it Nine? I’d actually argue that was the turning point of football changing dramatically, not all for the better.

Yeh, the league cup has been on its last legs for some time. This is now the perfect opportunity to ditch it. The loan system being extended will sort of replace it allowing big teams to develop their players at other clubs, though does the loan system itself not basically serve the purpose of helping the bigger clubs make more money when eventually selling on players? When a player goes on loan, unless they’re really young, it’s usually the beginning of the end for them. A lot of this unsurprisingly will help the big clubs as it’s in their interests and I can’t see the support for lower clubs lasting very long…unless we start to see some of the big clubs forming “partnerships” with lower league clubs. Though again, that would start to effectively form premier league club B teams, something Benitez called for some years ago if I remember. Could see this kind of thing happening now, though they’ll never formally call them B teams.

Such times usually result in revolutions of sorts. Though getting all the clubs to agree to all this may be difficult. But no doubt some of the above will happen.

Now the clubs have had to shelve plans to allow a limited amount of fans in the stadium, its not surprising they’re looking at other ways to boost revenues. Perhaps they’ll cut the fee if the numbers aren’t good. I certainly ain’t paying that.

Yeh Sean, as I just put on TT, Van Dijk’s twitter feed says a lot – just two days before the Villa game he tweeted a picture of him celebrating last season’s title win and not long before that tweeting pics of all his individual awards before the CL draw. One minute he’s tweeting how focussed he is, the next losing saying how the team must learn lessons together…all shortly before showing off again. And then the cycle repeats. It’s an absolute nonsense but sums up as you say that he’s running on his hype now. Not one ounce of leadership in that Villa game, he just disappeared. Just do your speaking on the pitch, get off Twitter and have some humility.

Just a bizarre decision from Arsenal in the first place. A PR disaster – of all areas to cut costs they kill off the mascot?!

I think Man Utd’s decline and De Gea’s decline are probably linked. I do wonder sometimes if De Gea rues that failed move to Real on an almost daily basis.

This is the huge problem with owners that will still makes lots of money out of the club brand leaving less incentive to actually target the bigger trophies. Getting top 4 becomes the end rather the a means to the end. There’s actually an argument to say Utd would have been better off without the CL this year because it may have woken the board up. Instead, they can reassure themselves that because they finished in the top 4, things are ok and there’s no crisis.

I don’t think the bookies will bother offering “both teams to score” this season.

Gj, yes my complaints about the deflections were just out of frustration. Good interview from Klopp, Villa deserved much credit today and focus should be on them today.

It’s going to be so tough for managers to coach keeping focus on the pitch this season on a consistent basis because psychologically players need fans to perform. So far Ancelotti is passing that test the best.
