Well that didn’t take long.

You’d certainly expect goals today.

Cant really bear watching SPOTY anymore. It’s gone all American with the cheesy presentation of it and over dramatic music as Brian alludes to. And then Gary Lineker asking people to “describe their emotions” every 5 minutes with responses as profound as “Well, I couldn’t believe it, it was amazing.” Be much better to have something more low key, with a prestigious panel on stage discussing why each contender deserves it, followed by a period of voting, then the prize giving. No nonsense.

Nothing really more to be said about VAR. I suspect even the people drawing those lines think it’s probably daft, but everybody is just “following orders”. Until the people high up enough (some of who no doubt have private concerns) are brave enough to publicly express their own criticisms of it, we’re left in limbo. Utopia never works.

HH, it’s even more farcical than that. If the person drawing the lines tried to draw them again, they’d probably pick a slightly different point, and because of the thickness of the lines and tightness of it, it may have been deemed as onside.

Another absurd offside call by VAR.

Perhaps that’s why they appointed him Nine, thinking he wouldn’t demand a big budget and get the best out of what he has. Not working though is it. But he’s still out of his depth either way. I just don’t know what the strategy is at Arsenal. Kind of reminds of when Liverpool appointed Hodgson when they looked pretty rudderless. Arsenal need a breath of fresh air. They ain’t going to get that from Arteta.

Ancelotti was available when Arsenal were looking for a manager, but appointed Arteta instead. I think they tried to be too clever in appointing him, thinking they were unearthing a future gem.

That’s 13 goals in 13 league games now for Salah. Now repeating his first season numbers.

Looks like we’re taking the opportunity to undo the damage from that Villa game.

Looks like the Spurs result has really put some confidence in the team. That’s why it was such a big win.

Diouf, Diao & Cheyrou were our big signings that summer if I remember. And they were all disastrous. That effectively finished Houllier at the club. But thinking more about Houllier, he effectively had two jobs at Liverpool – he was both manager, and in a sense, technical director who oversaw the big changes needed at the club. That’s probably what put him under so much pressure and perhaps what led to his heart problem or exacerbated it. But still, he laid a vital foundation at the club.

I was on TT from early 2000s too I think. Posted under “Mikkyboy” then, Mikus thereafter. That period was its heyday though. It was a great hub for news and the yoursay feature was a real bonus with some funny characters. That’s the mistake I think they made with the new site imo – they separated the yoursay feature from the home page so you only got the die hard fans staying after that. Shame, but all such things come to an end. Good to have this site though to continue from those days. Do pop back to TT occasionally and there’s a few good posters still there, but just got increasingly frustrated with accessing/navigating the site.

It is a strange situation at Man Utd with Ole. Win their game in hand, they go 2nd, above Spurs, just 2 points behind Liverpool. But they only have a +3 goal difference – one of the lowest in the top half of the table. Their record vs the (usual) top 6 so far is also poor having played 4, drawn 2, lost 2. Also, their CL performance probably gives a better indicator of where they actually are at the moment. It all feels like a kind of unstable equilibrium whereby as Sean says, injuries to Rashford and Bruno would hit them badly.
If a new manager came in tomorrow though, with *this* squad of players, would they do that much better? But if I was a Man Utd fan, it wouldn’t change the fact that the club are still drifting – they’re neither great nor dire. Do you throw more money at Ole? It may help a bit, but the club, as we’ve said for sometime, is in dire need of assertive leadership to do what needs to be done. The Pogba situation sums up the club – by paying the fee they did for him some years ago, the club were effectively saying, we are going to build the team around you – you are going to be our star. But they didn’t harmonise this with their managers, and since then, they’ve been trying save face over Pogba. Moving him out of the club, and putting the manager in charge again needs to be a first step. (If Allegri is targeted though, having worked with Pogba at Juve, one wonders if that would tempt the Utd board to give Pogba one last try 😂).

Yet there’s an argument at the moment to say Fabinho is the 2nd best CB at the club.

Football is a game won by the team that makes the fewest mistakes. It’s also a game of moments and psychology. Jose uses these facts and plays the percentages that very often pay off for him as Ed says. Similarly, Big Sam reaps similar rewards by adopting these methods. These managers may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but they always deliver. That’s why they’re always sought after.

Not saying he’d be more expansive but think he would have taken more risks here and there. At the end of the day, it almost worked out had one of those chances gone in – no way we’d have come back from 2-1 down to win 3-2.

As I said last night I don’t think Jose feels quite strong enough at Spurs yet to play a bit more boldly in parts. Yes, that’s his general game to defend and play the percentages, but if he just had a bit more trust I think he would have had more of a go, though he was somewhat hampered by the Liverpool press.

Just a point about Henderson. I like many have been ambivalent about him over the years, but I think it’s a cultural difference as to why we perhaps we don’t appreciate players like him the way foreign countries do. The main reason I say this is, granted we’ve only seen Thiago in a few games so far, the player he has mostly reminded me of in those games is Henderson. I think managers like players who keep possession and are very good passers of the ball – they won’t ping great balls in all the time but will only do so when the conditions are right. So it helps the team stay patient in possession of the ball which helps grind the opposition down. And I think that’s it. Paul Scholes is another example of a player again who perhaps wasn’t as appreciated in England as he was abroad. Hence his position in the England team was sacrificed so that Lampard & Gerrard could play in the middle – such a thing would never have happened abroad. Scholes would have been put in the middle and either Gerrard or Lampard would have been sacrificed instead and put on the bench – something I think Gerrard has admitted should have happened in recent years.
