My beef with our midfield was that we needed more dribblers to drive forward and score more goals and share the burden. Thiago is more like a Xabi Alonso, something we weren’t particularly short of. But when he became available, I just think the club perhaps felt he was too good to turn down.

Not much to add to the above. You just sensed we’d hiccup tonight. Raise our game for the London games, then struggle tonight. Squad players not good enough, not enough matchwinners in the side, still not enough goals from midfield, and missing the Anfield 12th man.

It often seems the case that after a long serving manager, there follows a period of short term appointments. I think this is because clubs get too complacent and comfortable with the original manager and are then caught off guard when they leave or things decline.

The Anfield crowd usually plays a big part in these games. Not available this time.

Thought that was Klopp then when the camera panned onto Hasenhuttl. Almost panicked for a second 😂

Feel a bit for Nat Phillips. But Klopp obviously wants more experience. Suspect Kabak the more major signing but the Davis signing happening maybe because he’s cost just £2 mill and is worth a punt at that price.

Yeh Ozan Kabak from Schalke also rumoured to be on his way.

Bringing Bale in seems more like it was a publicity stunt more than anything.

It was Nil, though I think it would have been better if he had started. Playing a more defensive line up first, then bringing on more attacking ones later strikes me as being the wrong way around. It seems to work out a lot better if you play to your strengths with your opening line up, then bring on more defensive players once you’ve got a reasonable lead. It worked out well in the end today, but that was because Salah was on absolute fire.

But that was quality. Why was Jones not playing from the start?

Not enough quality up top for us today.

As some of the pundits alluded to today, it’s almost as if Man Utd have suddenly realised where they were and started to think about it, and then almost panicked a bit. But I think it was always going to be the case of when their good run ended, not if. Though this season is generally the story of different teams on good runs but peaking at different times.

But if wins them some silverware, they’ll both take it. And he will have done what Poch failed to do in 5 years there.

City slipped to 12/5 to win the league just before Christmas. Should have put a bit of money on then.

Jose always plays the safe percentage game when he doesn’t quite trust his players, particularly against more attacking sides. I think we’ve debated this before when Spurs would have been better to attack more in such games, like the game at Anfield. But for Jose it’s about staying in a game to maximise the chances of eking something out of them. Indeed, the definition of the word “eking” does sum up José’s general modus operandi: “make an amount or supply of something last longer by using it frugally.”
It’s not always going to work, but over the course of a season to Jose it will pay off. Spurs are potentially only one point off top 4, are in a league cup final and remain in all other cups they could be in. I’m sure most Spurs fans would take that at the moment._____________________________

I think that may be part of it Ed. Also as Pagan says, these types of manager don’t tend to grow on trees even at the best of times. I do wonder if part of the problem in this country is that our gutter press puts a lot of people off. I know Graham Taylor may not have been the best manager for England but the way the press treated him was just disgraceful. They don’t just criticise (which is legitimate) but they dehumanise them. People may say top managers should still be able to deal with this (and many do) but even so, we hardly do our best to encourage them.

Does Britain have any charismatic managers with tactical nouse? Why aren’t we producing them? The only one who I think would be the best bet out the “golden” generation would be John Terry. I know he might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but he’s very much his own man, seems calm, is well respected football wise, and I think he sort of does exude a quite charisma. And he’s very much out the limelight at the moment at Villa.

Whenever a club makes a managerial appointment, both parties should use each other to the same extent and there has to obviously be trust as well. With Chelsea over recent seasons, it was clear the director of football had a lot of the recruitment power and was simply using Lampard to oversee things in the interim. So that was never going to last long. The committee at Liverpool was a similar kind of thing that was deployed because the club didn’t trust the manager. But it was disguised as a “committee” rather than a DoF.
So you need to find a manager you can trust. But then with Roman, that still may not be enough. He just uses people and then discards them. It’s cold hearted ruthless business. And it seems to work for him pretty well.
