Ed, I think certainly the turbulence is over now in terms of desperately trying to replace Fergie and spend your back to the top. The club looks more pragmatic now and the team looks more cohesive. It’s as though you’re just waiting for the right man to come along now who can take you to the next level. Concern is, are we now experiencing a dearth of top managers?

Ed, that’s because I think no crowds have helped Ole more this season, and I don’t think the team feels as much expectation versus the lesser sides and they aren’t hearing the frustrations and groans from the fans. It’s in the bigger games, you miss the crowds more. Bottom line is, Ole and the overall team, still ain’t good enough. Though, that last sentence could be applied to a lot of the top 6, who have been poor for a few seasons now. I think the reason for this is that there’s been a bit of panic buying or poor buying at these clubs for some time now, and the reason for that is that they simply don’t possess managers to attract such players so are either over compensating or are trying to be too clever or shrewd.

Ed, those sides have been in the top 6 for a long long time. They are the established big clubs in the league. Even if one or two have slipped out in the last season or so, the players will still go into those games and treat them as big ones. I think it does say something psychologically about Utd that they’ve only scored one goal over all those games. Man Utd are obviously playing to their strengths but also are playing the percentages in the bigger games. It has made them the best of the rest this season, but in any other season, I don’t that would be the case.

Sean, I think I felt better in the days of Bjorn Tore Kvarme 😂

That’s a remarkable stat from Sky. Man Utd have only scored one goal in the 7 games vs the top 6 this season.

If we don’t concede with that team, it’ll be a miracle.

Both these teams look like they both know their limits and so neither are particularly going to risk it. Take City out the table, and this league is average, with just over 10 points separating positions 2 to 10.

I haven’t see the Sky documentary, but have read reviews on it. What is clear to me is that he has clearly been so focussed on golf from such an early age, that it has almost unhinged him. How much of that push came from the people around him, like his father, I don’t know. (I think the tennis player Andre Agassi had a similar push from his father in his childhood that affected him). But when the stories of the prostitutes came out, it didn’t surprise me as it appears he was looking for some kind of release. That’s by no means to defend what he did – just to perhaps explain what contributed to it. Then there’s all the fame and attention to deal with at such an early age – none of us know how we’d deal with that under the same circumstances. All a tragedy really, with not many people coming out of it well.

Giroud a great player to have in your squad. Would swap him for Origi any day of the week.

I do wonder if a similar thing could be said of Solksjaer at Man Utd who I think is on course to get his best points total at the club. Had the fans been there at the 6-1 defeat to Spurs you could imagine the boos that would have gone around and some may have started calling for his head. That’s not to say Man Utd fans are not loyal, just that the pressure had been building for a while and could have reverberated around the ground earlier in the season.

Am sure many have already seen it, but this a huge positive over recent year. Phenomenal achievement by the NASA team. Engineering at its finest!

Problem is Steveo, you might be waiting a long time for that plan! So pragmatism will be your best bet until then. On a more general note, there really is a huge lack of authority and leadership at many clubs. This is one problem that CL qualification and staying in the premier league gets you – many clubs simply start playing safe because significant revenues still come in regardless and fans will always support the club. Winning things arguably doesn’t boost things as much financially as you think, so the incentives just aren’t really there. And now we also have the economic consequences of the government actions on the pandemic.

Not that it would happen Steveo, but would you take Wenger back tomorrow? Not that that would suddenly turn you into prospective champions again, but I think he was able to paper over cracks that his successors haven’t been able to. I think you were only ever going to go one way after Wenger, and it wasn’t upwards. The owners got too comfortable with him being there getting top 4 most seasons, and as often happens, they didn’t think very much about what would come after him.

Pagan, yes it is odd that by sacrificing the midfield, Klopp created the double whammy of a makeshift midfield and makeshift defence. Surely as you say, better to have a weak/makeshift defence but maintain a strong midfield than makeshifting *both* areas! As for Klopp discarding an alternative option, I wouldn’t be too sure. Fear gets the better of many people and I think fear got the better of him there.

It’s a difficult one Lucky. For Klopp I think, less is more. He created a small group with a huge mentality that has been very very good for several seasons now. But it’s unsustainable in the longer term, and if you don’t keep freshening up, it will inevitably weaken and start to collapse. And then you need to rebuild. At least we’ve hit 40 points!

Dear me. The collapse continues. Was unable to see the game today. This isn’t an attack on Klopp who clearly has had a huge impact at the club. But I never thought even if we were successful under him that we would be a particularly robust side, i.e. take just even one ingredient out of the mix, and we can really struggle – be it if we aren’t as tight at the back, or don’t create very much, or lose certain players. Of course City have big money to help, but we saw even last season when City lost some of their edge, they were still very good and very effective. They still scored easily. We can’t even do that and now we’re also weak at the back. That’s a devastating combination. The front 3 have been too comfortable for too long. The likes of Jota were signed too late. And the midfield has failed to offer back up to the attack, and has had to be used instead to sure up the defence. In short, some players have been too comfortable, some have got injured, and the squad players have been no where near good enough when coming in to replace them.

Interesting analysis of Minamino when at Salzburg – “At Salzburg, Minamino was played in a fluid attacking role that allowed him to move freely and ‘unlock doors, pick a pass and move with an elegant gait.’
It looks like he’s been set free again at Southampton. He wasn’t getting games at Liverpool & I wonder if he was being constrained in the team when he was in it in that Salah or Mane were always the preferred go to options for forward passes.

I think Tuchel ticks several boxes for Chelsea. He’s experienced at the highest club levels, he coaches the modern way, and he’s German so can better communicate with some of the players they’ve bought. The quickness with which Chelsea appointed him indicates that the club feels he is a safer and more stable option. He’s probably another “interim” one for the moment, but the club will obviously see how it plays out under him and if he does well, bonus.
