First league game weβve technically lost this season after the Spurs debacle. Too many players missing today in midfield and probably missing Salah now too. Both Endo & Salah should be back soon.

Jota should be penalty taker.

Emery clearly a very good manager, I just don’t know if he’s one of those better suited to more of a chasing pack club than an established club. I’m not sure he has the personality for a big big club.

Why I say Ange Ed is because I think he’s actually got the criteria to work well at a big club. He’s clearly a very good man manager and communicator, and he’s clearly a big personality with the fans. Those attributes go a long way for me and are Klopp like attributes. I concede tactically is where I would worry a bit but with our fans behind him I just think it could work well. There may not be as many CL finals but he could do a good job for a few seasons while we potentially found someone better. I’d still probably favour Alonso because there would be that fear of him going somewhere else and lighting up the world, and he’s always had that demeanour that he could be a good manager one day. Might be a touch soon for him but if he’s good enough, he’s good enough.

I agree Alonso could do with another job before us ideally to bridge the gap. But his record is very good. Failing that, I think Ange would be next choice. He’s got the big personality and man management to handle it and would be a more seamless fit following Klopp. (I’m sure Ed agrees π). Yes, there’s tactical worries but with Anfield behind him I think he could do a good job. You’re never going to replace Klopp obviously. Like looking for a new house you’re not going to find the perfect one, though Klopp was close to that.

From Alonso’s wiki page. Potentially bodes well…
“Alonso convinced Arteta to transfer to Everton after he told him how happy he was living in Liverpool.
Even while playing at Real Madrid, Alonso has declared himself a Liverpool supporter and returns to watch games at Anfield when his schedule allows. He was quoted in The Times Online in 2011 as saying, “I am still a Liverpool fan and will be forever, absolutely” and that he will raise his Liverpool-born son as a Red supporter.”

Yeah Threeps, that makes sense. He probably did want to leave last season, but wanted to turn things around first and now we’re ahead of schedule that turn around is complete. He’s also an emotional guy so it must have been so draining for him.

Alonso the current bookies favourite and probably my first choice. De Zerbi worth considering. Luis Enrique β not sure he needs bigger resources to bring in his kind of players. Have to say though, in his short time at Spurs, I do like Postecoglou. He would fit in seamlessly after Klopp. (Sorry Banjo).

Strange thing is, I thought last season he started to looked drained and tired when we had that difficult start to the season, and that perhaps he didn’t fancy another rebuild. And I think I mentioned that in several posts last season/earlier this summer. But since the turnaround from that, I just thought normal service had been resumed. But underneath everything, it’s maybe still taken a lot out of him. The way he coaches is demanding and it’s been 8 years has it now? Still a shock considering the way we’re currently performing, but nobody is superhuman.

As for who could replace him, I’d already start looking at Alonso._____________________________

Yep, paying the price for not putting the game to bed a lot earlier. Without having Jota on for much of the game, we lack composure up top. It’s all been a bit too rushed.

Refreshing to see us actually start a game well. Nothing quite over just yet though.

Yeh I do think Klopp shares that trait Ferguson had in terms of instilling that hunger and grit to keep getting over the line whilst also using and developing young players fresh from the academy. Good to see Nunez get a couple. He can finish so well in some instances and other times he can’t. Does he just think too much sometimes?

Thing about Ange is that he’s clearly a very good man manager and communicator evidenced by how quickly he got his message across when the season started. They have a very defined way of playing and players I think like that as it generally keeps things simple. It also makes the club attractive to prospective players.
And that’s a problem for Utd now. Who wants to join them as they currently are? Trying to get more players out and replacing them with more Ten Hag players is I think for the birds, partly because of his track record of signings and partly because a manager’s job is to galvanise the team they inherit. I just can’t see him in charge next season. Changing a team’s direction has to start with the manager. Of course you need the right backroom staff too, but as I’ve said before, the effect of getting a good manager in tends to then focus minds at the club to get the right other people in too.

Man Utd just look rudderless. You don’t know what you’re going to get.

You have to be a great communicator to be a great manager. I think great players get frustrated they can’t communicate across their own natural skills and abilities.

The front players have been a work in progress since the Salah Firmino ManΓ© era ended, but Gakpo & Jota clearly better in the middle. Nunez clearly talented and a handful and is actually very fluid with his pace and strength to play anywhere across the front 3 but seems to be effective now as an assist maker in the wider areas coming up with the odd goal – a bit like Diaz in that sense. It’s maybe not what we thought we might be getting with Nunez but he obviously is contributing.

This talk of Van Dijk being back to his best I’ve not really bought. For me it’s as though he plays far too casually at times. Also I still maintain we’ve got a problem up top. Just not dangerous enough there or enough goals from the front players. This goes back sometime to a few seasons ago when in 3 finals we never scored a goal. We are where we are purely because of the mentality and grit Klopp instils to keep getting us over the line.

As regards Werner, did a similar thing not happen with another German striker, Podolski at Arsenal? Was he not used on the left whereas he was better up top as a no.9? The modern manager seems to like their forward players to be both wingers and strikers all in one and be fluid players. If you try adapting some players to be like this, I think it struggles to work. Players like Salah and ManΓ© are more fluid players but they are rare and hard to find, so I think this is why other players try to be changed. I remember Aspas, a striker, coming to Liverpool and then being used as part of a front 3 and it didn’t work. He then went back to Spain I think and scored a hatful again. This problem seems to happen quite a few times.

Aguero often gets overlooked in these debates. He was one of the best strikers in this league, and imo probably gave City the edge over us in our battles with them. Such a clever striker that could finish from any angle and scored some very important goals. Did it year in year out.
