A good question Ed, I am not sure how Klopp planned to use him.
I didn’t know enough about him before he made the move to Chelsea. I almost said that I had no idea that he had issues with finishing before he joined but I had read a few remarks about it but his stats were alright I think and the highlight videos showed someone who could score goals. I think I was happy enough with the idea that he might miss some, given the ones he was able to score.
Having seen him now, I guess my mindset on him is a bit different but Chelsea have a weird ability to get the worst out of some attacking players.
I wasn’t that wild on us paying what I felt was a lot for Salah, based on his failure at Chelsea but was I wrong there or what? Klopp also had to be convinced by Edwards BTW. Salah was not a Klopp signing. Good on him for being open to the idea that others might know better though.Klopp is obviously not the entire package but whatever people think about him, he does seem to find a way to get the best out of the vast majority of players. If people think back to his first 2 or so years here, I don’t think he was getting the best out of our defence and it was looking kinda bleak at one stage2 but then we signed Van Dijk, Alisson, Robertson, Fabinho etc and things were just clicking into place and there we had it, he was getting the best out of the defensive players too.
So, maybe he would have seen something in Werner that he could develop. You might find that Werner finds his shooting boots and actually is a proper 9. I guess the closest thing that I can think of to this is how Rafa pushed to sign Torres because he knew that he wasn’t just a talented player but could be lethal if he just started his runs in different places.
It’s been a long long time but Torres spoke about this once. I think Rafa had been telling him that he he started his runs a little further back that he would do a lot better and sure enough, Torres blew the PL away in his first season. We aren’;t talking Haaland or Salah’s first season numbers but they are freaks._____________________________

Trent out for a few weeks now with a minor ligament tear. Wow, it seems that we came really close to a major injury there. I wouldn’t be shocked to hear that he’s out for longer, as surely you’ve got to be really careful here.
Either way, it’s going to be really tricky now without Salah and Trent. Especially since We are already covering for Robertson’s injury on the other side.
I suppose we’ll have to play Gravenberch at RB for a few matches? We’re getting a bit threadbare now.

Well, I’d play Werner as an inside forward. I wouldn’t have him as an out and out striker. If he is then I’d be playing 2 up top.

Sean, I wasn’t that bothered by it at the time but I read his comments about his motivations for heading there again earlier… it’s so cringeworthy.
Just admit that you went there for the money. But ya, no interest in having him back and I think he’s burned his bridges with Klopp.
Chucky, I think Werner will be a very good signing for ye, if he’s used right. I don’t think he’s going to be your main goal threat but he could work well in the build-up. He’s a good player, he’s just not clinical, so no number 9 jersey, bassically.

Fair enough Ed, you’re talking about some seriously top-tier defenders.
As for that article, how many games was that into the PL start? I#’d say not many. I don’t remember the scenarios that led to these goals, so I can’t comment on them but having watched him in pretty much every match that he’s played for us (take out a handful), I have come to expect a top level performance from him, and I am almost never let down./He’s human, and he does have some poor performances in there. So have all the other greats, but with Van Dijk (last season aside), they are so few and far between.
(if this is slightly wrong, do correct me) Since he’s come here, he’s played I think 90 PL matches at Anfield and lost only 1.
That’s incredible, again, especially for a team that doesn’t just sit back.I am not coming out and saying you’re wrong. We have our own lists (or partial in my case) and I haven’t seen a name yet who isn’t/wasn’t a footballing god.
It really doesn’t feel right to not have Bergkamp in there but I can’t fit him into a 5 man list.

“Itβs staying at that standard for a long time which imo sets apart the greatest of their generation. ”
Yes but let’s remember that the reason he wasn’t at that standard had nothing to do with his talent or performance levels. He was attacked by the Everton Jester and took an injury that ends careers.
It isn’t like he just started playing poorly. People were saying he was past it. I have gotten a few things wrong (like Nunez) but I called the Van Dijk situation. Ya, I actually got something right! lol
Keane is hard to omit also ya… I would have him ahead of Scholes but I know most won’t agree.

Top 5 is too difficult for me.
As for Van Dijk, I would have him in there as before he was given that horror tackle, he was the best defender that I’ve ever seen.
He wasn’t top level last season because he took a long time to recover. Look at him now though. In those 2 seasons, Van Dijk went over a year without a single player dribbling past him, in all comps and I think we made the final of the CL during that time.
Before people say that isn’t THAT amazing, remember that Liverpool played with a very high line then. That all said, I totally understand why people don’t want to include him but at his best, he was better than any of the other names mentioned. He’s also gotten back to it now.
I also don’t see a way not to have Gerrard in there. I think people are forgetting how crazy good he was but it’s a 5 man list and there are so many PL greats. It’s quite frustrating actually.

It is indeed. Fuck it, give us Man City. If we can play them earlier in the season rather than in the semi-final or so when we’ll be tired….

Nice to just get into the next round without a replay TBH.
Beating Arsenal away with some squad rotation and no Salah isn’t bad. Ya, we’re going to have to buy a natural goal-scorer. I also don’t think we should sell Salah but it might not be so difficult to avoid that, as the Arabian thing looks to have gone flat. I don’t think they’ll come in with a lot of money in the summer.Let’s just keep him, as he’s probably got loads of seasons left.
A top top striker though, please. Obviously, that won’t happen this window, as we probably can’t go spending til summer but ya, we’ll get by with what we have and hope it’s enough. I guess it gives Nunezz a chance to find his confidence but I’d seriously be starting Jota ahead of him for the moment.

NUNEZ MISSES AGAIN
Just! π
more like it from Diaz. That effort to give Jota the ball was not at all easy but he nearly managed it.

Van Dijk is back to being in the discussion for best CB this season. There are some other players out there whoa re also amazing.
Konate though, ya the only issue with him is his injuries. If he can somehow get ahead of them and play consistently over the next few years, he’ll become a legend here._____________________________

nunez needs to wake the fuck up. I’m getting really impatient with him. I have lost all my confidence in him ever scoring. I am just thinking how he’s gonna mess everything up.

I think the Jota situation is more nuanced and difficult to see if it is or not, than 99% of calls.
I’m not married to the idea that it is a penalty. I lean towards it though, I think more than most Liverpool fans and the fact that so many LFC fans don’t, I think is pretty commendable and I’m willing to admit, potentially telling.Trying to remember back at first time I saw it, I thought it wasn’t in real time but then in replays, I c hanged my mind.
It is after some discussion and the angles that I saw after that I doubted myself a bit.VAR only gets a few seconds. I have serious issues with them. I don’t think they should be allowed to watch everything in slow mo. they only show the very odd one in real time.
They also seem to very often look at the worst angles for things. Im not only talking about this situation, it’s something I’ve noticed for not only Liverpool matches.

I don’t like the whole Carra + Neville project. It’s Sky’s effort to create drama between the 2 biggest supported clubs in the country. The sport has enough natural drma, they don’t needs this theatre style banter. I also don’t like Roy Keane on Sky. The odd time we get something amusing but again, it’s all theatre. He’s playing a part more than the is giving his own natural reaction to things. It’s all overblown and fake.
I know people love it and that’s a shame. The sa,e people who all wet themselves over all these unreality shows… It’s all dumbed down rubbish.
I kinda miss the old days of punditry tbh.

Penalty or not, I definitely don’t agree that it was simulation.
He’s thrown himself down to force the ref to make the call. he isn’t diving that late as simulation that the keeper has absolutely cleaned him out of it.No, I don’t think that any contact = penalty. I don’t think anyone else here does either. I have said the exact opposite for countless other penalty incidents over the years.
Whether people think it’s a penalty or not (and most clearly don’t and affair enough), how does anyone think that he’s simulation being cleaned out of it? He is so obviously dropping to get the ref to make a decision on the actual contact. I mean, his dive is a full step or more afterwards.
I was joking around yesterday when I was calling Jota a diver and a cheat etc. I do think that he wanted a penalty for the actual contact that the keeper made. Now, whether he deserved one or not is another matter. He didn’t dive. Its not simulation.
He wasn’t pretending anything.

Should Liverpool start looking for a natural goalscorer?
Spurs were after a CB but the deal has fallen apart.

Sean, I know I saw an angle during the live stream that showed Jota was fouled. The angles afterward just weren’t good at all. I would go back and try to find it but I’m happy enough with us just winning it and we deserved the win. Newcastle weren’t robbed etc.
It is refreshing to hear the keeper saying that it was a penalty though. That’s a bit like the ASrsenal player last time saying that it was a penalty. Fair dues to them.

As for Alonso, maybe he is one for the future but I don’t want to look past Klopp and Pep. My thoughts are that hopefully, they’ll continue to feel passionate in fighting for this project. I don’t want to look at who might be next and I don’t want the press to be asking it, putting those thoughts into Klopp’s head. Until Klopp says he’s leaving, I’m happy to see Alonso carry on wherever.
It is very interesting to see him doing well and long may it continue. I wouldn’t expect him to not take certain jobs just so he could hope to land the LFC job, but he is a more suitable candidate than Gerrard and I’m not even slightly surprised.
Bests of luck to him.
Klopp to stay for many more years though please._____________________________
