Conte and European competition just don’t mix well.

Ed, Bellingham was fixed as part of deep double pivot last night, even when they went to 3 at back we didn’t see much of him.
Dortmund decided to keep it tight yesterday rather than go for a goal, it cost them but I understand it given our problems up front they probably thought they could just keep clean sheet and move on.

Scott Parker sacked by Club Brugge following hammering at Benfica last night.
Sacked twice in one season!
Benfica looked tasty though, rafa silva amd Gomez look like very good players. They may be seen as the team everyone will want in quarters but they are super dangerous.

Yeah nil top pro and fantastic squad player even post prime.
All teams need pro’s like that and fair play to him for earning MBE.

Yeah Cucurella was fantastic at left centre back last night 67, absolutely faultless and started a lot of our attacks with good balls down the channels.

I still cant split city and arsenal. If they were level I would favour city but Arsenal’s lead makes it tough to call.
I fancy pool and utd to get final champs leagues spots.
I also predict chelsea to score a goal in open play by end of season 🤣

7th March 2023 at 3:33 pm in reply to: Most embarrassing Manchester United performance today #205183Sean, Just trying to make sure Ed knows I see where he is coming from but also that it’s ultimately irrelevant what the Xg was in games so clearly decided.
Ed is spot on to say its extremely rare to find Xg so grossly exceeded, from that POV alone it is extremely anomalous, (which is a more accurate way of describing it than unfortunate which is not appropriate I admit).
I think the polarising effect the 3rd goal had on each teams confidence turned the game into an anomaly in which logic didn’t really apply thereafter. The score could have been more as well as less depending on whatever ifs buts and maybes we want to insert.
What is not in question is that Liverpool destroyed utd in that second half and that they deserved a big score.

7th March 2023 at 2:34 pm in reply to: Most embarrassing Manchester United performance today #205181It’s like a boxer getting his head smashed to pieces and knocked the hell out talking about the rounds he won earlier in the fight, that he never been knocked out like that before and his opponent never punched anyone that hard before, or that his opponents threw less punches than average and so statistically it is rare and odd that the fight ended as it did.
Only difference is the boxer has concussion as an excuse for the waffle! 😆

7th March 2023 at 2:27 pm in reply to: Most embarrassing Manchester United performance today #205180Nil, I actually agree with what I thought Ed was saying but confused now.
Regardless of my poking I actually believe 7 nil was a little unfortunate considering as Ed has pointed out how a few of the goals seemed to just fall perfect for pool and the Xg etc etc, but that ultimately counts for little because both the score and Xg show utd were soundly outplayed and thoroughly beaten. When you destroy a team mentally like pool did all bets are off and no one can guess the score.
Xg is totally worthy of discussion but it’s pointless to refer to it following results like this.

7th March 2023 at 2:11 pm in reply to: Most embarrassing Manchester United performance today #205178Ed, it’s about the game on Sunday, nothing to do with Xg prior, it’s all about performance on the day and the Xg over season you refer to indicates that pool have not been as clinical as would be expected based on Xg, that’s it, the Xg itself is far above average for them and irrelevant to Sundays game because they don’t play utd every week and all players perform at different levels game to game.
I personally think ten hag got it very wrong and you paid massive price. Not having a go at him I think he doing great, but man for man at anfield banking on winning all one on one duels?

7th March 2023 at 12:49 pm in reply to: Most embarrassing Manchester United performance today #205165What Xg when contrasted to score tells us is that pool were far better in final third than the average prem team at converting and utd were worse defensively and offensively compared to average prem league team data. All the data is weighted relative to the aggregate for the league for similar chances.
That the average team would have scored 3 with the chances pool had only suggests pool were much better than average, not that if you played it 100 times pool would rarely score more than 3.

7th March 2023 at 12:43 pm in reply to: Most embarrassing Manchester United performance today #205164Ed, I do like Xg and over a season the data can tell us a lot about a team, even more so when contrasted with actual results.

7th March 2023 at 12:15 pm in reply to: Most embarrassing Manchester United performance today #205157Then we agree Ed 👍 utd deserved to lose 7-0 and all this talk about Xg is just mental gymnastics to help you accept it 😉

7th March 2023 at 10:57 am in reply to: Most embarrassing Manchester United performance today #205137Lads, Xg just gives a measure of the quality of chances and approximates the number of goals that would usually lead to based on averages of all players in league, whether great or shite.
What all are missing here is that great players and teams outperform Xg on a mixture of luck but mostly quality.
In both pool loss to Madrid and pool victory over utd the winning team grossly out performed their xg. Madrid did it because of the quality they had in junior and benzema, they can’t be held to laws of the average and Xg becomes meaningless if it ignores that it was the superior quality on the night that made the difference and led to Xg being exceeded.
For utd loss, sure utd fans can claim bad luck that it was 7 but it wasn’t bad luck that pool scored more than Xg of 3 as much of that was down to the superior quality of salah, gakpo and nunez of the day.
All the analysis in the world leads to same conclusions, real destroyed pool and pool destroyed utd.
