They done well keeping hold of kane and son. Combined I imagine they account for 25-30% of spurs wage bill.

Mikus, what top player will choose spurs if they have options with champs league teams with similar or better wages?

Mikus, imagine if pools wage budget was 20m higher to match city, maybe you keep Mane as well as salah, maybe you keep wijnaldum instead of letting him go on a free when you did etc..The wage budget determines a rough ceiling of what can be achieved, great managers like klopp maximise return. The difference between city and spurs is roughly 60m per season, 3 times greater than the 20m difference Klopp had to contend with.
Imo Conte could not have done more and its likely his successor will not either. If he does I will be first to sing his praises.

Mikus, conte got top 4 his first that’s a success in itself.
Forget transfer fees and net spend, a clubs ability to attract and retain the best talents is down to it’s wage budget.
For reference on the last list I saw for prem clubs city spend 160m per season on wages, pool spend 140m and spurs spend just shy of 100m. This allows pool and city greater scope to offer contract extensions to most important players and also attract better players in first place.
Without spurs consistently being able to match city, pool, utd and chelsea in wage budget they will not consistently compete. They will do on occasion and when it happens great credit should be given to whoever the manager is because the odds were against him from the start.

Mikus, the will of the manager is irrelevant in that regard, the manager doesn’t set wage budget. You think klopp could have taken on city with spurs wage budget and working with levy? The gap between city and pool is considerably smaller than gap between pool and spurs.
Sure all clubs need good managers but that’s not what we are debating here. It’s what should be expected of spurs under their next manager who I am sure will be a good manager whoever it is.
Imo to match conte and get top 4 in first season would be an amazing achievement for whoever succeeds him permanently.

Mikus, if wage bill and league finish didn’t correlate so well season after season I would agree with you.
The exceptions prove the rule as they are so rare. If you don’t have wage budget in top 4 season after season you have little chance of finishing top 4 season after season.

Mikus, utd and arsenal are giants as are pool. The ceiling for these clubs is much higher than spurs.
Would anyone claim spurs are a sleeping giant like pool were? I wouldnt.

But what if a club is at its ceiling, is it reasonable to expect marked improvement from any manager?
Poch and Jose delivered cup finals, Jose was sacked week of his final. Poch and conte achieved champs league football (as did good old Harry if I remember right)
I am not saying its impossible to do better but not by much.
City, Liverpool, utd, Chelsea, arsenal – 5 clubs that will ensure top 4 is always odds against for spurs and Newcastle coming in to that. These clubs fighting hard for the same cups too.
My opinion is recruitment will need to be much better and even then when your wage bill is outside top 4 good luck regularly competing with top 4.
It would take a miracle for spurs to win league any time soon so it is appropriate that Leicester have been mentioned.

“I just donβt buy this βno manager will succeed thereβ”
What qualifies as a success at spurs?
I think it’s top 4 and an occasional cup

I’m a bit baffled by it too banjo but his contract expires in summer and I doubt Levy will want to pay out. Heard rumour that there is a clause in conte’s contract stipulating compensation of full year salary if sacked any time this season and though I am not certain of that it would help explain Levy’s hesitancy.
Impossible job for conte’s replacement mate, whoever it is will be expected to do better but destined to do worse imo.

What I don’t understand with conte is why he feels the need to behave like this.
He came in on short term contract with clear target of top 4 and champs league place. He did exactly what he was paid to do first season and despite not kicking on this season he still has them in 4th albeit with Newcastle with few games in hand. He should have just seen the season out as a pro because then he could have likely come out of this with two top 4 finishes in his two seasons, something his successor will probably not match.
A lot of people, myself included, agree with what he said but I disagree with him saying it at this point in the manner he did.
I remember comparing poch record to Harry’s and concluding that despite the appearance of progress, in terms if win percentage they were very similar and there wasn’t much progress. Now they have had two of the best managers in the world back to back and again the ceiling is top 4.
Should be clear following this that any criticism for failing to challenge for title or trophies can not be put on the manager unless the level of investment in the first team and the quality of recruitment are both improved considerably.
That’s what conte was pointing out and what has really pissed him off.

Just cut below from BBC, shame they can’t show some backbone and maintain that position.
In 2016, he was criticised for some tweets about child migrants. The BBC responded by saying: “Gary is a freelance broadcaster and this is a personal Twitter account.”
