It was certainly worrying to see England come out second half and immediately sitting deep and inviting pressure. I think every single football fan watching that game felt that Italy would likely snatch an equaliser unless the pattern of the game changed and England could see more of the ball or at least show a real threat on the counter. I think we were all expecting England to to get to half time and regroup and all were looking at Southgate to make a change.
Haven’t a clue what changes should have been made though. Every change suggested seems to have risks and Gareth seemed to back his team to cope with pressure and keep clean sheet. Italy got an equaliser from set piece, shit happens, and England could not gain control of the game.
It was going to pens for sure and that’s where England lost, penalties. My only confusion re Southgate are his decisions regards the penalty takers and the subs made in last min of extra time. He tried approaching it in a calculated and emotionless way and pick the best players statistically, but like many have said that is not at all appropriate as these conditions can not be simulated.
The irony is you would think Gareth would understand all that better than anyone right? Maybe he resented having to take a pen ahead of better players just because he had the bollocks? I don’t know but the penalty shoot out was where it was lost from a completely factual POV and given that he gets an easy 8/10, but 9/10 imo for a very fine effort.

England win the shootout and Southgate is knighted, lose the shootout and he got it all wrong! Who the hell would want this job!

Nil, chiellini is an absolute legend and his performance last night was unbelievable. He got a deserved yellow for that foul.
He wasn’t just amazing defensively, he was almost in final 3rd during italys build up at times always there as a pivot for the players ahead who were moving around like prime barca.

Doesn’t take much reading between the lines to infer it will be his last tournament.

I think Italy deserve tremendous credit. They were shook by the early goal and couldn’t lay a glove on England for the first half. The way chiellini started getting high in left channel in second half made all the difference. While a more experienced and confident England would have seen that as an opportunity, this side were too scared of letting Italy play through middle to counter it and just got forced deeper and deeper. The movement of the Italians off the ball in possession was a class above to be fair.

I don’t think Southgate bottled it, I think mistakes may have been made but that’s different. Southgate has a semi final and final as England manager, only sir alf can top that. So while mistakes may have been made what’s clear is Southgate is a man who is learning how to be a top international manager and coming on leaps and bounds like his team.
Well done Gareth and England, learn from this and apply it at the world Cup which will be here very soon.

I’m so sorry lads. It’s hard not to argue that Italy were the better team but at half time I thought England were in control. Italy were different class second half.
It was a lot of pressure to bring rashford and sancho on just for pens, Hardly touched a ball all competition but they will feel personally responsible for the loss and I can’t imagine the pressure they would have felt.

So impressed, its basically 541 out of possession and the work the 4 of rice, Philips, Sterling and mount are working like animals to nullify that Italy midfield. Kane is looking in top shape and the wing backs have so far made all the difference and once again Southgate selection has been vindicated

The wide players for Italy come inside a lot, with 3 centre backs Gareth is looking to safeguard against this without prohibiting his full backs getting forward I think.
Hope it works looks good to me lads

Lads, don’t listen to the nonsense in press or from envious fans of other home nations. There is such an anti British sentiment across Europe at the moment too. As someone who is as happy to be Welsh as I am British I hope with all my heart that you beat Italy. Best of luck lads, I see the final as 50/50 but England have done you proud and like Italy they deserve to be in the final more than anyone else.

Foxy, I’m Welsh and haven’t a clue what you are so confused about. What is Southgate’s goal? I am pretty sure it is to win a major competition, 2 semi finals in a row suggests he is doing as good a job as anyone since sir alf.

Mount was involved in two of the goals blaze, he drove forward with ball before finding Shaw wide for that great cross for kane and he also was corner taker for Henderson goal and it was a proper delivery mate.
Ultimately I wouldnt argue with Southgate selections for next game whether he plays mount or not because he is always getting it right whoever he plays, and like everyone else, mount did his bit when called upon yesterday mate.
