Wow! That hurt yesterday. Didn’t understand why Jurgen made two defensive changes from the Arsenal. Trent and Klavan in for Gomez and Lovren, I didn’t understand. Suppose he’s keeping them for Wednesday night, but against a team with the attacking power of City, it was a huge risk. And why no Robbo? Same reason, I guess.
I think the sending off undoubtedly hugely affected the game, and the second goal before half time was effectively gaame over. But the capitulation in the 2nd half was nothing short of pathetic. They, and I include the manager in this, showed no pride in the 2nd half, and consequently were humiliated.
On the bright side for Klopp, Mane’s 3 game suspension makes it easy to re-integrate Coutinho!!
Crap day…move on!

Living in Manchester and my neighbours being City fans, I won’t be going to the pub tomorrow to watch the game. Stick at home I think!

I’m with you, Banjo. You making a late bid to be boss of FIFA? Belinda would be round like a shot then!
The break up of the season with internationals is a nightmare, particularly the early season games. We get 3 games in to a new season, and then everything is put on hold…and the fact that it coincides with the transfer window closing, the whole thing is unsatisfactory to say the least. The trouble with your idea of having all the friendlies at the end of the season, all you are effectively doing is creating another tournament, but this one is just a boring one!
I love the bi-annual tournaments and am gutted whenever England miss out. I loved Italia 90 and Euro 96, but maybe that was just a different era pre-Premiership. I would say I far prefer seeing Liverpool win trophies than England, but I’m not quite old enough to remember 1966, so I wouldn’t know. I do know that the country would go ballistic if, by some remarkable set of circumstances England found themselves in a major final…but that ain’t going to happen!

I totally agree, Ginger, but I’d be interested in your team in the scenario of a Champions League final tomorrowtomorrow with everyone fit and available.

Unless I’m very much mistaken, Nil is here already with an alter ego, and as far as I’m concerned he’s very welcome. If he is who I think he is he has written some very well ‘balanced’ posts, and a distinct lack of rants, so good on him.

2 things from todays match…I’ve finally worked out why Coutinho wants to go to Barcelona…he’s after first team football, instead of sitting on the bench!!
And secondly, my mole who some of you from Teamtalk may remember has reappeared and tells me Migs is off to Napoli after a bust up with the boss. Isn’t Reina still there? Don’t know whether it’s true, but he has been very reliable in the past!

You’ll enjoy it, Taxi, except you’ll be frustrated MOTD will only show 8 mins highlights and then crap from the pundits complaining how shit Arsenal were instaed of giving us credit. We were awesome today, and could and should have had 6 or 7

We know from experience how good Sevilla are, but they ARE beatable. Spartak Moscow will be tough, especially out there if it is one of the last group games. A freezing cold night in December in Moscow, and don’t they have a plastic pitch, or is that my imagination? Don’t think I’ll be flying out there for that one! As for Maribor, all I would say is just remember the trouble Ludogorets gave us last time we were in the Champions League!
But we really can’t complain with that draw!

Oz – I’m with you, I want as easy draw as possible. Would rather play the big guns later in the tournament! I think though it is written in the stars that we will draw Barcelona!

Well, that was fun, wasn’t it? As everyone has said above, those first 20 minutes were awesome and Hoffenheim were just blown away. And I have to say that I think the crowd played their part. The atmosphere before the game and during was terrific. Did you go, Beni?
As for the performance, I thought Moreno was our best defender on the night (never thought I’d say that!), Gini had his best game this season by a country mile, as did Can, but Man of the Match just has to be Sadio. Barca have definitely been chasing the wrong player. On this form he is unplayable.
My player match ratings
Migs 5.5 Had one of his less convincing nights, and arguably should have done better with first goal
Trent 6.0 Terrific going forward, but still plenty to learn defensively (sound familiar!). Regularly skinned by Gnabry in first half
Matipn 6.5 Doesn’t look certain alongside Lovren. Needs commanding centre back partner
Lovren 5.0 Should have done better for their 2nd goal. Not had a good start to season, and continued his run here.
Moreno 7.0 Other than one reckless lunge which he missed and left the left side exposed, he looked solid. Him and Mane electric going forward down left as a partnership
Can 7.0 Good high energy performance from our German. In the right place for two well taken goals and unlucky not to get a first half hat-trick with shot just wide
Hendo 6.5 Being picky here, but would loved to have seen him bury it for the 4th when he set up Bobby. His game is not there yet, but improving.
Wijnaldum 8.0 Was everywhere, and was unlucky not to score. At last the Gini from last season has come back from his summer vacation
Salah 7.0 His speed is frightening, and well positioned to take his goal. Unfortunate that of our two wingers, he pales in comparison
Firmino 7.0 Usual hard work and one mazy penalty box run in the first half showed promise. Confident finishIn summary Forwards 9/10 Midfield 9/10 Defence 5/10 !!

23rd August 2017 at 4:52 pm in reply to: Echo reporting Coutinho to Barcelona interest has ceased #4138But, Banjo, that really is irrelevant. While the money is nice, it would appear from our transfer efforts this summer, money is not the probelm at Anfield – it’s spending it. If he does go next summer, in May hopefully, and we ‘only’ get £80m, so what? As long as he has played his heart out this season, whether we are successful in our objectives or not, that will be good enough for me and , I suspect, the majority of the fans.

Newbalance. ..couldn’t help thinking while watching yesterday why did Xabi Alonso not point Marcos Alonso in the direction of Anfield? Just what we have needed over last couple of years. Mind you, Andrew Robertson looks half decent

Yeah, excellent post, Dan. I think we’re all sick of the 2 Spanish clubs coming over and taking our best players. Probably the 3 best players in the English Premiership in the last 10 years have ended up over there in Ronaldo, Bale and Suarez. But with all our bluster and indignance about the Barca and Real hype machines, is it really any different from the fan of say, Torquay United, who sees their best player go to Bristol Rovers? It’s the football food chain, and while Liverpool are relatively near the top of said food chain, Barca and Madrid are higher up. By and large, what they want, they get. We just have to ensure that we get a fee we’re happy with and then go and munch on someone lower down the food chain…hello, Southampton and Leipzig!!
I’m really split as to whether we should keep Phil. He is good, but he ain’t £120m good. On his day, he is excellent but he is inconsistent, and he regularly misses 10 to 15 games a season. Earlier in the window, I would have definitely taken the offer, but now…? I really don’t know.

Mikus – good to see you over here!!
Do we not have a defensive coach? I find that amazing, if it’s true. You’re also right about the defence not getting alot of help from whoever is playing DM for us. Hendo, Can are not natural DM’s

WIB – while I thought the atmosphere had improved in the early days of last season, which I put down to the new stand, I now think it was simply because we were playing some sublime football. In the dark days of the winter, I thought the atmosphere was pretty piss poor, in all honesty. It’s still the same issue of an ageing crowd!
But good to see you over here, Beni!
