Mav…United-Sevilla is not 50-50 surely! I think that is the natural pessimism of a football supporter kicking in there! We obviously played them in the group stages and although we didn’t beat them in either game, we totally bossed them for a game and a half of those 2 games, and we’re never being against them. Can you imagine a Jose team giving away a 3 goal lead? With being at home in the 2nd leg I make it 75-25 in your favour. They’re not that good, honestly! But I DO understand your reluctance to predict a victory! Football karma, and all that!

Can Hightown and Chucky keep it up? Ooh er, missus!
On this weekend’s performance, I would say not!

8th December 2017 at 8:36 am in reply to: Champions League last 16 draw & poss oponents for our teams #8490Goat – am I not right in thinking that the teams finished top of their group are all at home in the 2nd leg?

999 – I totally agree. For me, there is nothing better than watching football live. I’ve been lucky enough to watch Liverpool through the glory days of the ’70’s and ’80’s and right through to the relative lack of success (and it IS relative, Nil!) over the last 25 years or so. I honestly don’t know whether I would be so hooked on the game if I wasn’t watching live football. It’s the whole craic of it for me, from meeting my mates before the game in the same pub we’ve been drinking in for nearly 40 years, having a moan, walking up to the ground past the same landmarks we’ve walked past for 40 years, having a moan about the team selection, watching the game, having a moan about the game, the opponents, the crowd, the ref, and walking back after the game and having a moan again. And you know what, I wouldn’t swap it for the world. It’s a major part of my life, I’m not ashamed to say, and watching the games live have given me some of the best nights of my life like Istanbul, Dortmund and many Wembleys, and it has also given me some of the worst days of my life, with the main one obviously being in April 1989.
But football is a drug, and it shouldn’t really be as important as we all make it out. Highly paid prima-donnas running around a piece of grass chasing a ball, scanning the papers or the net to see if yet another highly paid prima donna is coming over from Argentina to paly for my club. FFS, I’m 55…get a grip, lad!

Why should ‘hopefully Everton maintain that record’, 999? If they are one of the 3 worst teams in the league, they deserve to go. I wouldn’t feel sorry for them any more than Palace, Stoke or Swansea.

Mav – I’m interested why you think all the chasing pack are ‘one man teams’. I think that does a disservice to them to be honest. Spurs with Kane, Lloris, Alder…etc, Manyoo with De Gea, Pogba and..,
Liverpool with Coutinho, Salah and Mane, Chelsea with Hazard, Kante and Morata and even Arsenal with Sanchez, Ozil. I would agree with you if you had said that City have MORE world class players at the very top of their game than their challengers, but all the teams are more than just one man teams surely!_____________________________

14th November 2017 at 9:27 pm in reply to: England V Brazil – Tuesday 8pm / Italy fail to qualify for the World Cup #7476Is it me or is Dier overrated? Strolls around a lot trying to look in control but, I don’t know. Chucky, as a Spud, what’s your opinion on him?

Pub team, sorry Sean if you’re reading this! Plenty of effort and huff and puff but just no quality at all, I’m afraid

Defensively we look pretty solid but been a little disappointed with Rashford so far. Maybe a bit unfair but he needs to make the ball stick, and dare I say it, work a little harder

14th November 2017 at 4:41 pm in reply to: England V Brazil – Tuesday 8pm / Italy fail to qualify for the World Cup #7449I can’t imagine for one minute that Solanke is anywhere near ready for the England team. I have seen almost all of his appearances for Liverpool this season, and bar that one start as 9 says, they have all been limited to 10 minutes or so at the end of games. And during those 10 minute spells, he has looked eager, enthusiastic, makes decent runs, and always looks for the ball But Abraham struggled the other night, and he has a fair bit more first team experience than Solanke, for both Bristol City and Swansea. I don’t see the point of putting Solanke on the pitch tonight to be honest.
It’s funny how things have changed. It used to be that players used club football to get regular international football, now it seems that Abraham, Gomez, Solanke etc can use international football to help them get regular club football!!

And apparently the West Ham board are ‘surprised’ at the adverse reaction to Moyes’ appointment from west Ham fans! Really? Can they be really unaware of how low his reputation has sunk? Just a cheap option where they have to pay no compensation, methinks!
And it’s interesting how Karren Brady who was so vociferous in her condemnation of Moyes during ‘slapgate’ has been so quiet during his appointment!

Henderson on his day keeps Liverpool ticking over as so much play goes through him. Always offers an option and rarely gives the ball away. Many say the reason he doesn’t give the ball away is that he never tries an adventurous searching ball, but that’s not quite fair. He is a regular 6 or 7 out of 10. He seldom has a stinker but conversely he will never change a game for us, like Gerrard was capable of. Hendo would not have changed the game in Istanbul or I’m the Cup Final against West Ham, and it’s fair to say, he divides opinion amongst supporters at Anfield. Squad player at best as no team will ever win a major trophy with Jordan playing regularly.

Mav…I wasn’t suggesting for a moment that Salah etc would be targets for Madrid. All I was saying is that they would be off on the first Ryan Air flight out of John Lennon if they were. Mind you, don’t underrate Mo Salah. He’s a very different player from the one Mourinho rejected!

While Madrid do appear to be on the decline, no-one is diminishing Spurs great result the other night, far from it. I think, Deliverance boy, you’re being a trifle sensitive!! Certainly from my point of view, I posted a very jealous post on Thursday following our underwhelming victory over Maribor.
As for Madrid, it will be interesting to see how they approach the next few tarnsfer windows. I still get the feeling that if they flutter their eyelashes, top players will still go there, particularly the South American ones. Let’s face it, it’s an easy life for the players at Madrid compared to those in England. 3 or 4 tough league games a season only, Christmas off, better weather, and for the South Americans, fewer language problems for them and their family. I’m not sure the likes of Kane, Alli or Dier would jump ship from Spurs, but at my team, I feel confident that should Madrid come sniffing after Mane, Coutinho, Firmino, Salah, Can etc they would be off like a shot. And maybe that is the difference currently between us and Spurs…the Spuds are not far off winning things, and that is a big attraction.
