And he was a big man! I saw that clip a few days ago, and it struck me just how chuffed and proud he was to have played for Liverpool. He wasn’t upset that he hadn’t been recognised, he just loved talking about that game, even thouggh Liverpool were beaten that day!
I never saw him play, as my first game was just a few games after Ray Clemence had taken over, though I had to check! But a true Liverpool and Shankly legend, and certainly better than whoever will be appearing between the sticks tomorrow!

I originally went for a 2-2 draw, but the natural pessimism of a football fan as the game gets nearer has taken me over. I know City haven’t won at our place for ages, but I can’t see them as anything but strong favourites in this one. We have lost our lock unpicker, and City are pretty much at full strength as far as I can see. Would happily settle for a draw right now!

I think it’s great like this, as it actually encourages you to read posts that you wouldn’t normally. The way it is now is like a number of football mad blokes down the pub, though maybe that is a bad analogy after Nil’s meltdown. There is banter and mickey taking, and disagreements but it doesn’t get vitriolic and nasty like it does on other sites. For example, there is obviously a complete dislike of Milner by the City fans on here, which I don’t really understand, and I guess similarly they don’t understand our dislike of Sterling ( but surely you must do really !!)
Anyway the site goes from strength to strength. Even Beni is becoming a regular poster again!

Nil’s meltdowns are the regular Fri night / Sat morning entertainment. He does mean well, and I don’t really have an issue with him, as long as people dont think he is truly representative of all Liverpool fans. It would appear he has something of a problem with alcohol, and that is not to be trivialised and if that is the case, he has my sympathy.
As far as I am aware, this is his first major rant and ban, so I would warn him and let him back. He’s tiresome, but essentially well meaning and harmless

Yeah, Pagan, you and me both! That corner last night was the one I was referring to in my post. And the crowd couldn’t understand why they didn’t take the quick corner, and Chelsea lost all momentum.

And Mark…goal line technology is fine. As you say it doesn’t slow the game down but even more crucially everyone in the stadium knows that the ball is near, on or over the line, so they understand what is being looked at. And the result is definitive, and not just somebody’s opinion.

And another point that makes me feel it shouldn’t be introduced is that the technology has resulted in, for the first time, there being a difference between the elite game and the Sunday morning pub matches Football is basically a very simple game and the rules and implementation of those rules or laws have been the responsibility of the match officials, be it at an international, a Champions League match, a League 2 match or at the Three Crowns v Red Lion in Division 7 of the Oldham West league. That won’t be the case anymore.
As I say I have concerns that I’ll be sat at Anfield for 2 minutes wondering what the f*** is going on, like in last night’s game when the crowd were shouting for the corner to be taken while Atkinson was waiting for the VAR results from an incident 2 minutes before. Even Martin Tyler on Sky didn’t know what was happening! It will have to improve and if does then great, I’d have no problem with it

Jim…you’re right of course, I wouldn’t be happy in that scenario you put forward, but hasn’t that always been the case? The dodgy decision might go in our favour, and because of that we get in the top 4. Swings and roundabouts, and as I said in my earlier post, we need something to moan about both in the pub, on TV and on here. For me, it’s more important that the game keeps flowing. This game has survived 150 odd years without it and it’s done OK.
I know, having said all that, that it is inevitable it will be introduced, but it doesn’t mean I have to like it. I suppose I can just moan about VAR now!

It’s not like the Hawkeye system in cricket or tennis, where the crowd can see on the screen the decision being made and the reasons for that decision. Nobody in the stadium has a clue what is going on!!
Part of football’s beauty is it’s speed and the fact that it flows. Personally I think it is worth a few dodgy decisions, which, let’s face it, all give us something to moan about, no-one more than Wenger(!!), to keep the game flowing and everyone understanding what is going on!

I just think there is too much confusion as to what can be referred to the VAR. If you’re actually in the stadium you haven’t a chance of knowing what is going on. Maybe I’m a Luddite, but it’s a no from me!

Thanks Mav. So he’ll end up at Chelsea, get loaned out somewhere and eventually sold. In 3 years he will then be worth £200m and Chelsea will try and buy him back!

Who is he? Excuse my ignorance but I don’t get to see any Bundesliga football. Who does he play for? Nationality? Position?

Beni – my thoughts as well, though Holgate is a very lucky boy if he escapes punishment. But I think he will as the ref saw that incident, and I think I’m right in saying that if he sees it, the authorities can’t do anything.

Ed – I think you’ve done a fantastic job on this site, all credit to you, pal!
Made me laugh your comment about spending time with the wife and kids, bearing in mind your post this morning about your son wanting to support City! Presumably you have now kicked him out of the house, so this should free up some time for you to dedicate to the site!!

I don’t see how Firmino can be charged. The ref obviously heard nothing out of order, as far as I can tell no lip readers have come up with anything definitive, and so therefore, it is Holgate’s word against Firmino’s, and as the ref was right there at the time of the alleged comment and didn’t hear anything, I just don’t see how Firmino can be charged. I hope he didn’t say anything, and it’s inexcusable if he did, but what does seem clear is that Holgate has got away with a cowardly and potentially dangerous challenge
