Couldn’t agree more, Beni. As i said early in this thread, football is about passion, and yes, intimidation as well. As long as that passion and intimidation doesn’t cross the line, there is nothing wrong with it. Obviously none of us condone the bricking of a fan’s bus, but the passion, atmosphere and yes, intimidation is not about that. It is about letting the City players know they are entering a hostile environment, and indeed letting the Liverpool players know as they arrive at the stadium that the Liverpool fans are right behind them and will attempt to play their part in the evening.

Well, my son and I went to this last night, only to be disappointed that Messi wasn’t playing, or Aguero, or Chiellini, or Dybala!!
Having said all that, it was a surprisingly entertaining game. Argentina were by far the better side with Lanzini and Di Maria particularly standing out. I have to say though that Italy were woeful, and like Holland, you can see why they didn’t qualify for Russia. I know Argentina only scraped through with a victory in their final qualifier, but they looked neat and tidy. Took a few risks at the back as is the modern way, but played some exciting fast, one touch football, and all that without their 2 best players. Their defence is definitely their weakest area and Cabellero in nets didn’t inspire confidence, but they could be a contender in the summer. Not one of the favourites, but a dark horse definitely.
An entertaining evening, plenty of kids there in a crowd i would guess to be around 15000-20000. Plenty of blue seats on display, but nothing new there for the Etihad (stands back to watch the reaction!!). Smiley face inserted!

22nd March 2018 at 3:24 pm in reply to: MΓΈlby pretty sure Liverpool will beat City in the CL #18580999…you’re being naive if you think football is limited to just 2 teams kicking a bag of wind about for 90 minutes. Just the simple fact that you’re on a football forum tells me that you don’t believe that. Football is theatre and is marketed and sold to the nth degree. If fans just rolled up and didn’t participate in the drama, then football would lose a lot of its appeal. Maangers and players are always exorting their fans to make their stadium an intimidating place, and as long as nothing is done that is dangerous or illegal, I’m all for it. It’s a passionate game and if supporters can intimidate the opposition, go for it. Do the City players expect to be politely clapped in to the stadium?

22nd March 2018 at 1:49 pm in reply to: MΓΈlby pretty sure Liverpool will beat City in the CL #18569999…I have to agree with Beni and Nil. What’s the problem with Aldridge in his local newspaper column getting a little excited about the forthcoming match. He’s a fan and he’s paid to write like a fan. I had the pleasure of bumping in to him in Istanbul prior to the game in 2005, and I can tell you he was just as excited and up for the game as any of us ‘normal’ fans were. The Liverpool Echo and Radio City obviously like his passion, and I don’t see that anything he said is particularly disrespectful (or indeed insightful). Instead he’s just echoing (excuse the pun) want a lot of Liverpool fans are hoping and saying.

As gas as I can see the only comparisons Mak is making between Salah and Messi is one of playing style ie types of goals, dribbling skill etc, and one of current form. In both those comparisons, the exercise is a fair and valid one. No one is trying to say Salah is a better overall player than Messi, and he almost certainly never will be, but on current form, playing in the Premiership, I know who I would rather have in my team…and he’s not Argentinian.

But can you blame Son for putting the ball in the net if there is a chance that VAR will overturn the linesman’s decision? I confess that I didn’t see the incident yesterday either, so I’m only going on what I heard on the radio and have read in the papers. I don’t know if the ref blew for the offside or not, but, for the sake of argument, let’s say he did…so the keeper stops, but Son doesn’t and goes on and puts the ball in the net. VAR then says that the goal should have stood as the offside call by the linesman was incorrect. Is that goal then allowed? I genuinely don’t know, and surely that in itself is wrong. I’ve been watching football (and playing it) for 50 years, and I’m not completely stupid – I have understood the rules and laws of football all my life, and now suddenly I don’t. It’s shit, it really is!

Ok, so in the scenario above, as the offside was found to be correct, should Son have been booked for kicking the ball away and/or time wasting?
Alfie – if it is used constructively then it is a good thing – I agree, I guess…but my point is that it is not been used constructively, and they shouldn’t be doing this half-arsed experimentation where the officials, the players, the managers, and even more importantly the crowd don’t know what is going on. Somehow test in non league or test is somewhere and, if it’s a smooth, simple and incontrovertible system that works, then fine, introduce to the high profile professional game. I don’t have a problem with goal line technology, so I’m not a complete Luddite. That is instant and people can’t argue with the results. But at the moment VAR is causing more issues than it is resolving, and at the highest level of the game.. How can that be right?

999 – your post at 1.57pm regarding Klopp’s comment. What is wrong with that? Basically I think his comment just means that City didn’t want that draw any more than we did, and I can’t see your issue with that. If he’d come out with a comment saying that we have a better draw than Mourinho, Conte or Poch then I could understand it would be foolish, but there’s nothing wrong in what he said there.

What a crap draw! Real anti climax and the draw I wanted least even to the extent of being home first. If we had to get one of the favourites I would have much preferred one somewhere south of fucking Manchester!

With you, Mak. Just want any kind of win tomorrow, and like all games at the moment, it is a must win. We should be ok, as long as our front 3 have rediscovered their games from last week.
Meanwhile the draw this morning…really buzzing for it. Have to say, I want either Sevilla or Roma. I know people say they want Barca or Madrid, but I can’t understand why. You want to give yourself the best opportunity of progressing, and Sevilla and Roma are undoubtedly weaker than the rest. Still, whoever we get, it’s just good to be involved at this stage again. After Brendan Rodgers debacle 3 years ago when he didn’t get out of a relatively easy group, I doubted we would ever get back here. So I’m going to enjoy it and have at least one huge Eouropean night again at Anfield.

Hey, Pax, you say this England squad is the worst in your lifetime, and you’re right, it’s pretty damn poor.
However, I don’t know how old you are, but I’d like to offer you an alternative totally shite squad that actually went to the 1992 Euros in Sweden. A squad of 20 players included such illuminaries as Carlton Palmer, Andy Sinton, Neil Webb, Keith Curle, Gareth Batty, Nigel Clough, Tony Daley, Tony Dorigo, Trevor Steven, Nigel Martyn, Chris Woods and Alan Smith. And most of those players actually played!!So well over half the squad was absolute dross, and this was the squad that actually WENT to the Euros!! No wonder we were awful in that tournament.

Mav – that’s what I’m saying, mate…we didn’t perform!
Solskjaer – it’s an arguable point whether it was Jose’s plan or whether it was just fantastic defending by Young, particularly, but also Smalling, Bailly and Valencia, and of course Matic. They were on top of their games. Salah at al weren’t. I’m not sure how much of that is down to Jose, and how much is down to the occasion, form, pressure and all the other intangibles. I’m sure Jose would say it was down to him! And I agree about Henderson as well…you won’t find me underrating him. I would have played him instead of Milner yesterday, but as I stated above, I can’t really argue with Milner’s selection as he has played well in recent weeks. I’m just gutted because I really fely yesterday was big chance for us, and whatever the reason for it is, we blew it.
Anyway, congrats to the Utd boys on here (through gritted teeth!), but I haven’t given up on second place yet.

Well, you were right, Sean, though I’m sure you don’t get any pleasure from being right! However, United were not the better team, though arguably nor were we. At 2-0 down we could have capitulated, but instead we came out in teh 2nd half and gave it a go. 2 big errors led to their goals, individual brilliance from Rashford also, at least 2 big, clear penalty decisions didn’t go our way, and we battled to the end.
So although the result was poor, it’s not time to be too downhearted, I don’t think.
And this ‘Mourinho outsmarted Klopp’ – I don’t buy it. Lovren and Trent made big errors, but I can’t really argue with klopp’s team. They just didn’t perform on the day. Mane was dreadful, Salah was brilliantly shackled by Young, Milner and Ox, despite being excellent recently, just didn’t get in to the game, whereas their players did.
So we just go on. 2nd place is still open…I just hope City spank them…as well as Seville!

I can’t imagine any scenario where you want your team to lose. It just doesn’t sit right for a fan…even when we had Hodgson as a manager and we were all praying FSG would get rid I always wanted my team to win. Of course you do.
I remember watching Liverpool v Blackburn back in the 90”s and if Blackburn lost they might lose the league to the Manchester, and I still wanted us to win the game…and we did. Surely any true fan supports his team through thick and thin and at every game.

But Sean, you’re missing my point. We’d be underdogs for a reason, and that is that Barca are a f****** good side!! Admittedly, the thought of going out to Utd doesn’t bear thinking about, and I’d far rather go out to Barca than Utd. I gues we’ve just got to hope that Sevilla turn them over!!
