Morning Jim / Adlab.. Jurgen Klopp’s net spend in the 34 months he’s been at Liverpool is £114,850,000, an average of less than £40m a year, and that average is likely to drop some more over the next few days if we can offload Ings for £24m, Origi maybe, Mignolet etc. Now I don’t have the facts and figures in front of me, and frankly, I can’t be bothered researching them, but I would be pretty confident that both Man City and Man United’s net spend over the same period is considerably higher, so while ‘big spending’ Liverpool is a term that fits for this summer, I don’t think it really fits over Klopp’s tenure…at least not in comparison to the two Manchester clubs.
As for getting an easy ride from the Press, there have been plenty of comments and articles in the Press about Liverpool’s big spending this summer. A comment from today’s Sunday Telegraph ‘…how long can Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool and Poch at Spurs continue to claim they do not need to win trophies to be successful?’
All in all, it has been a long time since I’ve been as optimistic at the start of a season as I am at the moment, but you’re right, 30 points or whatever it was is far too much to claw back this season. My only hope is that Man City may concentrate more on the Champions League this season, but really I can only see one winner of the league, and my pre-sesason Lucky 15 bet on the winners of each of the 4 English leagues says the same. Even at ridiculous odds, Man City is the only bet to take.
It’ll be a fun season though. Since Klopp arrived the whole atmosphere at the club has been transformed, the football has been breathtaking at times, and I feel we’re still developing, so yes, I’m optimistic!

Is it just me, or are these video clips just a little boring? Don’t want to be a party pooper, especially an 80’s retro party pooper, but can we give them a rest?

Cheers Jim for clearing that up! Sterling is a funny one for you lot. as you say, his stats for last season were phenomenal (apart from any stat that lists him missing sitters!), but I still feel that he is your weak link in your team, though I have to admit that many teams would wish for a weak link like that! And I guess it’s in comparison to the KDB’s, David Silva, Aguero, Sane etc. If he learned to strike a ball properly, he’d be lethal!
As for Mourinho, the guy is little more than a disgrace. I don’t mind his comments aimed at Liverpool – after all, they are little different to what Klopp said when Utd bought Pogba, but his comments at his own players, the fans who paid a minimum of £58 to watch the game the other night and the veiled dig at the Utd board were terrible. I’m told he wanted a pre-season tour of the US this summer, instead of the trip to the Far East, and he’s still moaning. Guess what, all teams are missing players due to the World Cup…get over it! Unlike Sean, I really believe he is yesterday’s man, capable still,, but not a patch on the new breed of manager in the Prem. I honestly believe he is angling for the sack, and another pay off. I can’t see any other reason for upsetting sponsors, fans, players and your own bosses.

Jim – are you serious in believing that Firmino is holding Liverpool back? As beni says, he is quite simply the most important player in our side for Klopp’s system. You would be hard pressed to find a Liverpool fan who wouldn’t have his name as the first one on the teamsheet – yes, above Salah and VVD!!
I apologise if your comment wasn’t meant to be taken seriously, and was meant as sarcasm…it’s sometimes difficult to tell on a forum!!
I raelly thought his performances last season had won over the rest of the Premier League!

As a matter of interest, Blaze, which of the above players don’t you think deserve to be there? It seems to me that a case can be made for pretty much all of them, either by having great seasons with their clubs or spectacular World Cups

…and the fans, Ed.
I heard it on the Radio, Radio, that Allison Does Not want to go to Chelsea

Pax, those figures you’ve posted equate to a net spend of £175m excluding Allison over 5 years, a spend of £35m a year on average which is nothing outrageous, especially as we have made a profit the last 2 years. Even adding Allison on to that it puts the average up to ‘only’ £48m a year. Now with Fekir coming as well, and my sources tell me that that is definitely happening, then the average does go up to over £50m a year…and they’ve developed the ground. But we all know the TV money has gone up a huge amount and our run in the Champions League have brought in massive revenue over the last 24 months, so I guess FSG know what they are doing. It’s exciting times for Liverpool fans at the moment, and it is down to our manager. He attracts top class players, of that there can be no doubt.

Nah Chuck. ..you got to watch the World Cup Final. Not missed one since 1970. There have been some shockers like in 1990 and 1994, but you just kind of have to watch it. Will definitely be supporting Croatia!

Moos – you’re right mate, I won’t be watching the 3rd place game, and you’re right, a few million will be. But I guarantee it won’t be anything like the 25 million or so who watched last night. The players don’t want it I’m sure – even the fringe players I would hazard a guess would rather be on a beach in Dubai at the weekend rather than playing in what is little more than a friendly. I remember the last 3rd place we played in in 1990, and it was just so obvious England didn’t want to be there then, and I suspect it’ll be the same on Saturday.

For me, the players whose stock has risen over the last month are, in no particular order, Maguire, Trippier, Pickford and Stones. I think Henderson has exceeded most people’s expectations (maybe only because they were so low from so many beforehand not me though!). As for Sterling, I thought he did ok on the whole, I just wish he could finish. First half last night, I thought he was excellent but you do need 2 players who can score in the front 2 not just one. I thought Dele Alli and Walker had pretty poor tournaments, while Lingard Young and Kane were ok, but no more. And before Pax and Chucky accuse me of having a witch hunt against Kane, it’s not that. I’ve seen him play much, much better for Spurs than he did for England. Of course he did not have a poor tournament, but 3 of his goals were penalties, expertly taken I may add, but his overall play was no better than ok for me.
But the tournament for me, and England particularly, has re-ignited my waning interest in international football, and for that credit goes to Southgate and his staff. They made it a pleasure to watch and support our national team again. There appear to be no stars, they appear to be a good bunch of lads on the whole, with few egos and unpleasant personalities like Terry, Cole and Rooney dominating the squad.
I’ve enjoyed it, but FIFA, please get rid of this stupid 3rd place play-off game – what a waste of time, and frankly, who cares!

Mav…completely agree about Maguire. He’s surprised me just how assured he is in possession and never seems to lose an aerial battle…at either end of the pitch. He’ll be at a top 6 club very soon, I would imagine

I reckon Sterling was excellent yesterday, apart from obviously his finishing. He had loads more touches than anybody else in Sweden’s penalty box, he took up good positions, he ran at the defenders and crucially he never hid. As a Liverpool fan, I will never like him, but he’s in my first choice England team every time. If only he could finish as well!

How does Dier play for Spurs let alone England. Just strolls round like he’s too good for this team. Most overrated player in the England squad for me

Sorry, Oz, I thought your first sentence in your post at 9.36pm last night was referring to England, but it was about the tournament in general, was it? Sorry for any misunderstanding. But I still think the footy has been pretty good on the whole, with the odd exception.
Adlab – I think Young’s problem is being right footed as a wing back, and constantly having to cut back. We had a similar issue at Anfield when we had Milner at left back. He overall did an excellent job there, but he slowed down our attacks by having to cut back every time. We’ve seen the difference now we have Robertson there.

My changes for the next game would be Rose in for Young, and that’s it. While Sterling was poor vthe other night, his pace should frighten Panama, and I think Rashford can be more effective coming off the bench. If Alli is unfit, then play RLC.
I’m at England v Australia cricket at Old Trafford on Sunday at the same time the football is on. Which will be more one-sided???
