Mind you, any side that has one of the worst Liverpool players ever playing for them can’t be that great!!??

Whatever they were, 9, you wouldn’t have put money on it. Superb first half…and maybe I was a little unfair on Dier! But it’s the front 3 who are devastating, the back 4 pretty solid, Pickford passing the ball like Hoddle. Who needs a midfield! Still don’t think Winks has touched the ball!

But 999, that’s exactly what internet forums do…all the time…it is their raison d’etre. I raelly have no interest in the story other than I hope justice is served, whichever way it goes. But hoping internet forums don’t rush to judgement? You’re wasting your time, mate!!

Certainly the United fans I talk to here in Manchester by and large have no time for him at all, which surprises me a little. There was one particular game in the WC where he was just unplayable…sorry can’t remember which one…and I remember thinking that if he carried that form in to the new season he’d score a hatful.
The United fans obviously see more of him than I do, so I bow to their more informed opinion, but surely he has all the attributes.

Brian – while it would be great to have a top 10 scrapping for the title, I think we should be glad we have 4,5 or 6 teams that at the beginning of the season could feasibly challenge. If you look around Europe we are pretty much alone, certainly amongst the major leagues, that have that level of competition. Even the Italian league which used to have both Milan clubs, Napoli, Roma and Lazio scrapping with Juventus, it’s now nailed on Juve every year…is it 6 years on the bounce? Spain is pretty much just the big two, Germany is sewn up by Bayern every year recently, and I just can’t imagine following football in France.
So yeah, more competition would be fantastic, but it’s actually not too bad here at the moment. Might look back at this post in 5 years time after City have won 6 on the bounce, eh??!!

999 – not a problem, man! I’m realistic. Like you I feel City will stretch their lead fairly soon, especially with KDB back. But if someone had said to me we’d be joint top after 8 games having played Spurs and Chelsea away and City at home, I’d have laughed at them

Fair enough, Brian, but it’s not just the next match that counts. If we’d lost the first 8 matches, our next match wouldn’t matter in terms of the title race! But you’re right, statistics can be twisted, but I’ve taken as wide a spread as I can possibly do i.e everybody’s first 8 games – 20% of the season.
Anyway, as you say it’s all bullshit really – it was only meant as a talking point, so I guess I achieved my objective!

I think you’ve all misunderstood me. I’m not saying that because we have had the toughest first 8 games, we’re going to go on and win the league, and I’m not saying that we, or anyone else if it comes to that, are nailed on to beat the so-called lesser clubs. I’m not stupid…I know football isn’t as clear cut as that, and of course it evens out over the season…doh!!
But it doesn’t alter the fact that Spurs away, Chelsea away and City at home are 3 of our most obviously difficult games all season, and we’ve played them without too much damage being done, which as I stated in an earlier post, gives me a small reason for further optimism, that’s all. And 999, I did state that we were only a couple of minutes away from being 4 points behind yourselves and City

Moos – in the next 8 game run of fixtures Spurs have to play 3 of the other 4 challengers, and Liverpool and City only have to play one of their fellow challengers (still not including Man utd!). Chelsea and Arsenal play 2 each

Sorry, Chucky, I was only including the teams that I thought might challenge this season. That’s why I didn’t include YooUtd!
But you’re right, I guess, Utd away is one of the tougher games even if they are shite at the moment…sorry Mav, Ed etc

The other thing that gives me a bit of optimism is that in our first 8 games, we have already played 3 of our toughest games all season…more than any of our rivals. Spurs and Chelsea away and City at home. City have played Arsenal and Liverpool away, and Chelsea have played Arsenal and Liverpool at home. Spurs have only played ourselves at home, and Arsenal have played Chelsea away and City at home.
But of course, all that means nothing in the grand scheme of things. Both the City game and Chelsea away we were only a couple of minutes away from losing both games with the missed penalty and Sturridge’s late goal. We could very easily have been 4 points behind City and Chelsea instead of level on points. It’s going to be an interesting season!
