Don’t normally get to away games, but won 2 tickets in a raffle(!!) at work, so off to the Etihad with my daughter tonight – made for a cheap Christmas present (smiley face).
I would imagine City will come at us like they did in the Champions League 2nd leg first half. If we get a bit of luck and keep it tight first half, then hopefully they will leave some gaps for us to exploit 2nd half, again like the Champions League. It really is too tight to call, but I do know I would very happily settle for a point right now. A defeat would definitely be more damaging to City than it would to us, so maybe Pep will play it a little more cautious than I imagine, but a defeat for Liverpool would change the momentum of the two teams, and I’m not sure we have the experience and mental strength to get over a defeat.
So all that bullshit above can be summed up by saying I haven’t a clue what is going to happen, but I do know it’s going to very, very tense, and may be a very long night. Will be back on here tomorrow with my latest inane ramblings, blaming the ref (cos we always moan at the ref, eh, Pax!). I would say I just hope it’s a good game, but in all honesty, I don’t care whether it’s a good game. I just want at least a point! See ya tomorrow!

Whoa, whoa, Pax. You still got a New Year hangover or something? No-one’s being sensitive. My post had a smiley face in it – there was nothing smiley about yours!! Lighten up, fella

Pax…you’re kidding…Liverpool aren’t your favourite team? I’d never have guessed ?? it’s funny though, Sean”s right. We Liverpool fans have been moaning for years that our team was too nice. The Arse and Manu teams of the early noughties took hounding the ref to a new level. Even now I think we are too nice. We have one or two players who like to roll around a little, but very few, if any, who will leave a foot in or get in the ref’s face. In many ways that’s not a bad thing, but intrigued to see you think different. Salah, Wijnaldum, Firmino, Trent and even VVD wouldn’t say boo to a goose. VVD is too cool to do it and for the others it’s just not in their nature. I really don’t think any stats would back you up, Pax

Every club gets penalties they shouldn’t and conversely doesn’t get penalties it should get. I was very near the incident at the game yesterday, and my instant reaction was that it was VERY soft, and having seen it again on TV, I was obviously right. But we haven’t been given a penalty in the league at home for 425 days, and there were many times in that period where we should have definitely been awarded a penalty, and in instances where it would have affected the ultimate outcome of the game. I think we can all agree that the penalty yesterday did not affect the ultimate outcome of the game. So yesterday went in our favour…I hope one goes in our favour at the Etihad next week as well!!

Think you’re right, Mak, but at least it gives us an ray of hope. C’mon Palace! Always loved Roy Hodgson!

Cheers, Brian…nice sentiments. Same to you and yours. Half time at Molineux and we’re slightly fortunate to be ahead. But who cares. I’ll take scrappy 1-0 till end of May!

Good waffle, Mak! I’m going to do an Oz here, and say that there are a few teams ahead of Liverpool as favourites to win the Champions League. I would certainly put City, Barcelona, Juventus and PSG ahead of us, and probably Bayern, Dortmund, Real and Spurs at a very similar level. But Anfield on a European night is a very diffrerent place, louder, more hostile, more febrile, and there are no doubts, I have seen top teams freeze there.
So while we are in the discussion of potential winners, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We’ve got an ok draw, could be better but could have been worse, but we are without VVD for the first leg, and that is massive.

But Mav, deflected goals or not, there was only one good team out there yesterday, and it wasn’t United. 3-1 scoreline was immensely flattering to United.

Yeah, my money would still be on City too! I just want to hear you big up our team a bit. We are good, believe me! Unless it’s just superstition of course!?? best balanced Liverpool side for a generation. Even Sean has become more positive. You’re my next project!

Mind you, how bad were United? No fight, no passion and no answer to our pressing. If the manager has his £90m player on the bench and doesn’t use him when he has to change the game, he never will. I thought United would give us more of a game and at least show some balls. I’m sorry, I’m not meaning to gloat, but they were spineless today and truly the players must want Mourinho sacked to play like that in a game like that

Oz…now do you believe, mate? Just got back from the game, and boy, did we make it difficult for ourselves with Mane’s missed chances, but we deserved it. As I said to you earlier, Oz, we are well drilled and hard to beat as well. You’ve got to show a bit of faith in yoiur team, mate!
And the referee was abysmal!

A 1-0 would do for us, Chucky, unless Napoli score and then we have to win by 2 clear goals. All this is assuming PSG beat Red Star

That’s more like it, Mak. Don’t know if I would put our chances as high as 70%, but I would have us down as favourites certainly. The danger is if they score, of course. There are so many similarities to Olympiakos in 04/05. They scored first and were one up at half time, and then we blew them away second half…eventually! Now Napoli are somewhat better than Olympiakos were, and I certainly would’t want to have to score 3 without reply in the second half tonight, but even then I wouldn’t give up. The vocal chords are well tuned up – I’m gong to be hoarse tomorrow.

Oz…Liverpool are a very well drilled and organised side as well! We may well end up going out tomorrow night, mate, but we are bang in form at the moment, and Mo looked back to his old self on Saturday, so go in to the game thinking positive thoughts, pal!

Ed…I don’t think anyone is arguing with his CV. It’s his more recent history that is getting him all this criticism.
