Ed, I agree. I think this England team is steadily improving. I would hope Joe Gomez can be Maguire’s centre back partner, but he has to get back in the Liverpool team first, and that won’t be easy. As for Rice, well he’s far far better than Dier, and is only young and will continue to improve hopefully. Also agree with you about Sterling – he was brilliant. I remember when Liverpool sold Sterling, we as Liverpool fans kidded ourselves saying he’ll never be truly top class and Jordan Ibe is better than him anyway!!! Well I will finally admit officially that I think Raheem Sterling may have a future in football!!

Mak. .like Sean I’m surprised youre digging out Fab. Think he’s been well up to standard for us this season, almost playing as a 3rd centre back giving Trent and Robbo freedom to do what they do best.

Brian…good though Emlyn Hughes was, he wasn’t in the same league as Gerrard. I saw most of Emlyn’s career at Liverpool, and while he was enthusiastic, tough, versatile and the scorer of some spectacular goals, he rarely changed the course of games on his own like Gerrard did. Highest would be in my top 30 Liverpool players I have seen live, but Stevie would be in my top 3 or 4!

Owen is a tool and has been for a long time. Good, if not great, finisher but relied alot on his speed which after being overplayed by Liverpool when arguably not fully fit he lost pretty quick. By 2003 he was pretty much past his best.
…and probably the worst pundit on TV.

Chuck. ..don’t you think City are 4 times better than Palace? If they played 5 matches I’d fancy City to win at least 4 of them. I know Palace won last year but you are saying Palace would win 3 out of 10. No way!
Must admit I think the difference between goal average and goal difference is minimal. Would be interesting to know if any critical league positions would have been different over the years ie championship, Euro places or relegation?

The older amongst us here may remember that goal average rather than goal difference was used to separate teams on the same amount of points. I reckon it changed to goal difference in about 1973. I think I was too young to ever really understand how goal average was calculated, but my feeling it was something similar to what you did here Lucky.

3rd September 2019 at 11:51 am in reply to: Week 4: Because I\'m still bored (and annoyed about the cricket) #46968Mak. .I disagree with you about Grealish. I reckon he was moving at pace, got a little shove in the back which when you’re moving at pace like he was can make you lose your balance, and was then blocked by Cahill. As he was falling he managed to squeeze the ball through to Lansbury. I genuinely didn’t see a dive, but in fact saw 2 fouls ?? in my opinion the very least Villa should have got was a free kick just outside the box.Failing that a penalty for Cahills foul, and failing that a goal!!

2nd September 2019 at 6:20 pm in reply to: Week 4: Because I\'m still bored (and annoyed about the cricket) #46952So why isn’t Christiansen playing instead of Zouma? And I forgot in my earlier post, Rudiger, of course

2nd September 2019 at 5:58 pm in reply to: Week 4: Because I\'m still bored (and annoyed about the cricket) #46950Lucky, I only saw the MOTD highlights of your game on Saturday, but my uneducated take on it, and indeed Chelsea so far, is that there is little to be too despondent about. Against United you were the better team for much of the game, well certainly the first half, against Norwich you got the win, and against Sheff Utd on Saturday you just failed to kill them off, a bit like Spurs yesterday, but for 45 minutes you battered them. I forget who your other game was against, I’m afraid, but you were arguably the better team against us in the Super Cup, and Mount and Abraham must have exceeded expectations so far…and you’ve got Hudson-Odoi and RLC, as well as Kante to come back in. As I say, I wouldn’t be worried too much, though obviously you’d like more points! The downsides for you, in my humble opinion, are Zouma and Pulisic. Zouma is nowhere near top quality (why isn’t Christiansen playing?) and Pulisic has shown very little so far, though it is early days.

2nd September 2019 at 5:37 pm in reply to: Week 4: Because I\'m still bored (and annoyed about the cricket) #46945I raelly enjoyed both games yesterday, the Everton-Wolves game and the Arsenal-Spurs. Exciting as both games were, however, there were an awful lot of errors in both which made for exciting games, but I’d be surprised if either Spurs or Arsenal finish too close to City and Liverpool. Arsenal clearly have a major problem at the back (David Luiz? Please!!), and Spurs should have been able to close that game out after being 2 up.
The real talking point of the weekend for me was Villa’s disallowed goal against Palace. It was an absolute shocker by Kevin Friend, and if you were a Villa fan, player or manager you would feel very hard done to. If VAR is meaant to erase ‘clear and obvious’ refereeing errors, it didn’t do it’s job there. Maybe it was unable to because the ref had already blown his whistle, but if VAR couldn’t award the goal, could it have awarded the penalty for Cahill’s challenge on Grealish. While I accept that error would have happened pre-VAR, shouldn’t this system that is meant to erase mistakes have done something about the biggest one I have seen so far this season?
And finally, Lucky and 442, leave it out lads! Just agree to differ, eh, and leave the bickering to those on ‘the other site’. You both make good and interesting points, they are just different!!

Phil Gartside and Sam Allardyce have a lot to answer for in my opinion. That was the start of the mismanagement. It’s really sad, and I feel for those fans who have lost their club, both at Bolton and at Bury

Great example, threeps. Super Saturday in 2012 was another of ‘those’ special moments. It’s fantastic, isn’t it?

I’ll echo that, Chelsea man. That’s amazing, Brian! Seen the good, the bad, the dreadful and the stunning, I guess. Keep going as long as you feel physically able!

Just the most ridiculous decision I’ve seen for a long time. Why are the authorities trying to ruin our game? There should be no scenario where that goal is ruled out, and for the previous 140 odd years of football It wouldn’t have been, so why the f*** change the rules now? It’s scandalous. Pagan and I have long since been anti VAR, but people have told me that it will mean more decisions being correctly called. So what, if it means crap like that I saw yesterday. That is no way a correct decision, and is just going to ruin the game.

Hi Lucky. Good to see you over here on the light side! Your lot were a trifle unlucky last night as you were at Old Trafford on Sun. It’s not all doom and gloom at the Bridge…and with Hudson Odoi and RLC to return.

And as for Nil’s rant last night, it’s not anything new and it was just a matter of time. So early in the season is a bit of a concern though!!! I like Nil and like Chucky, some of his rants just make me laugh, but last night was offensive and the apology this morning was a joke. As Steveo said it was funny when he just ignored people telling him to shut it as though they weren’t there. Last night made me think he is either a dickhead or he has mental health issues, but Pagan, I implore you don’t have open season on him when a Liverpool result goes wrong. There are a lot of decent Liverpool fans on here who don’t want the abuse that Nil dished out last night. You are neither a dickhead or have mental health issues, so don’t stoop to that abuse please.
For the most part this forum would be a poorer place without Nil, but Jesus, he’s on thin ice, so Nil, if you have a drink problem or mental health issues, I feel for you but try and rein it in for all our sakes, not least yours. If you are just a dickhead, you can do one. You’re doing none of us any favours.
I’ve said my peace, but I fear he will do it again.

Not posted on here much recently, but thought I’d give my two pennyworth on the penalty incident last night, the referee and the use of VAR. I have been vocal in my opposition to VAR since it was brought in, and my position hasn’t changed. It doesn’t bring anything to the game, but actually detracts from the enjoyment of the game. I think we all agree that it wasn’t a penalty last night and should never have been given, and I’m afraid I blame the referee who otherwise had a very good game. I believe that referees will give penalties more often now, because they are unlikely to be overturned, unless there is a clear and obvious error. From the referees POV, if she doesn’t give a penalty, there is a greater chance that her decision will be overturned if contact is seen to be made, so I think she played safe last night by giving the penalty knowing that there was unlikely to be a clear and obvious error. Adrian admitted in his post match error that he touched the attacker and the attacker touched him, but the ball was travelling out of play and the striker went down very easily, so it was easy to give. As Adrian did touch the striker there was no obvious error, but we all know that shouldn’t have been given. Imagine the scenario if Adrian had caught him and she hadn’t given it…she would have been slaughtered. Now we’re all blaming VAR and the striker for going down too easily. I think it was a cop out on her part, which was a shame as she did very well otherwise.
As I think Nil said somewhere above on both the Liverpool goals, I didn’t instantly celebrate because I thought they would go to VAR – that has surely got to be wrong…even more so when you’re actually at the game. It will be a disaster, as Mikus, Threeps and Pagan have said far more eloquently than I.
Anyway, it was a very good game, and I was very impressed with Chelsea. ‘A chance of sneaking 6th place’ says 9 – ha, you don’t kid me 9. That side will comfortably be top 6, and have a shout at top 4 if Pulisic settles quickly, and Kante stays fit. Glad to win some silverware from the Reds POV, but ever so slightly concerned with our defence. VVD was dire last night, Robbo looks leggy already, Gomez shouldn’t be playing ahead of Matip at the moment, and Trent is regularly caught out of position…and of course Allison is out for a while. So while I’m not panicking yet, I still make City big favourites to clean up again.
