Mak – is there really a growing number of Liverpool fans who think Fab isn’t doing enough? I’ve not really heard that. Maybe on social media, which I don’t really look at, perhaps. But both on here and among my matchgoing mates, we are surely just excited to get him back to full fitness and the powerhouse he was when he got injured in early December. He’s only played a couple of games since he’s been back, and on Saturday you could already see the improvement. I sincerely hope he does get back to his best, as we will certainly need him for the rest of the Champions League campaign.

I think what is interesting in that article threeps is how the value of players can plummet as well as astronomically rise. However much anyone wants to have a go at City for their net spend, by and large, their players have maintained or increase their values, or they have been there long enough to get greta value. If they sold Sterling tomorrow they would get more than the £50m they paid for him, as they would for Laporte, KDB, Bernado Silva, Jesus, and Edison. And they have had more than their money’s worth from the likes of Fernandinho, David Silva and of course Aguero. They have had the odd mistake as well, but when you compare that to United’s or Arsenal’s net spends and players they’ve got on their books, they’ve done pretty well. What would Luke Shaw, Lindelof, Matic or Martial be worth now? Even Aubamayang or Lacazette?
Fortunately at my club, we’ve either been very lucky or incredibly astute. I can only really think of Karius as a major mistake, mind you, he did cost us a Champions League, so you could say that cost us very dearly!! In the past we had plenty of expensive cock ups…Aquilani/Carroll anyone? But now we have been brave enough to sell our best players like Suarez and Coutinho, and still manage to strengthen the team. That is key, and that is down to the team of Michael Edwardes and Jurgen Klopp.

Well, that was a fun night! …and on a school night, as well. Really proud of the kids last night, a number of whom will never get the chance to play at Anfield again in all likelihood. And the atmosphere was bouncing on the Kop, with the 8000 Shrewsbury fans, the other end, playing their part. There were a few empty seats around the stadium, but not many at all…more in the hospitality section than elsewhere. And good to see so many kids in the ground also. The next generation of fans getting a chance to get to a game.
Some greta performances particularly from Neco Williams, the young kid at right back (but imagine being understudy to Trent!), Van der Berg at centre back had a terrific game, having looked very shaky in his previous couple of games, Cain and Chirivella in midfield and of course Jones as well. Great technique from the lads, though I did think Shrewsbury got their tactics wrong, in standing off the kids too much first half and allowing us to grow in to the game and get confidence by just knocking the ball around.
It really stood out how the kids played exactly the same way as the senior lads play, and the whole evening just showed how good everything is at the club right now. The mentality of the kids was just as strong as their seniors. Overall, a much, much more enjoyable evening than I had anticipated, and it wasn’t even as cold, wet and windy as I’d thought.
And, Chelseaman, I wouldn’t be so sure it’ll be full strength Liverpool in the next round. A few days before our 2nd leg against Atletico Madrid. I guess it depends on how the 1st leg goes, to an extent, but haven’t the likes of Jones, Elliot and Williams earned another crack?

I really think shrewsbury will start favourites, at least in my eyes, tonight, and therefore they stand to make £500k+ with a favourable draw in the next round against Chelsea. Still think there will be 45000+ there tonight, so they ain’t going to do too badly, even at the reduced ticket prices

I think Sean is right, Gary. Spurs have offered nothing going forward. You’ll score at some point

Hey, Ed! Any reason why when I touch the latest page number on the Liverpool going forward thread it opens at a blank page? I then have to go back to second to last page. First world problem, I know, but if it is an easy fix…

Come on, Mak! ‘Kissing his ass’? Why is praising Hendo ‘kissing his ass’? That is disrespecting both those of us who do praise him and Hendo himself. You praise Gomez and others but I would never accuse you of doing it for any other reason than you genuinely are excited by their form. I am entirely sincere about how well I believe Hendo is playing at the moment, and that is the only reason I am posting on this thread.

Interesting question as to who one would release! For me, currently, it would be either Gini or Fab, but it would be a very hard call. I really wouldn’t want to lose any. Hendo brings too much else to the team to lose for me, on top of his playing ability. I guess it would have to be Gini, because of his age, and the fact that he probably won’t get any better, but as I say it would be a tough call. Few, if any players shield a ball more effectively than him and are harder to dispossess. He does alot of the spadework in the team that would be hard to replace.

Err, sorry, mate, did I not say that VVD and Mane (and Trent) are and should be in the running for POTY? Have I ever said that VVD is not the best defender in the world? He is the Rolls royce of defenders, mate, and I will argue to the death with anyone who disagrees. My point is that we have the best defender in the Prem in VVD, the best attacker in the Prem in Mane, but also the best midfielder in the Prem in Hendo. There has been plenty of discussion on here from fans of other clubs saying our midfield is ordinary, and tehy are absolutely entitled to their opinions, but when Hendo has a blinding game, like he did yesterday, and when respected pundits like Shearer and Lineker say that he is their choice for POTY, I think it is worth further discussion. It is nothing to do with over-compensation, though now you come to mention it, the difference in quality between VVD’s worst performance for Liverpool and his best is miniscule compared to Hendo’s worst and best!! And that is also to Hendo’s credit – to show the strength of character and the determination, not to mention the sheer, bloody hard work, to prove people like me, and Brendan Rodgers, wrong. I will absolutely 100% admit that I got it wrong about the lad. I never thought he would be able to turn his Liverpool career around to the extent that he has.

Wow! Can’t believe 65 points was enough to get 3rd in 97/98!

Let me start by saying there is not a centre back in the Prem I would swap Gomez for, but yesterday was not one of his best games. He gave the ball away a couple of times early, but was strong enough to settle in to the game, and 2nd half was back to his best. I imagine and hope he will be a Liverpool centre back for another 7 or 8 years, barring injuries.
And as for Hendo being POTY, it was Shearer and Lineker who said it, not me, but I’m telling you he, along with VVD, Trent and Mane are right up there in the running. We were laughing at ourselves at Anfield yesterday, recalling the times early in his Liverpool career where we had slagged him off amongst ourselves. Always arriving a split second too late in a challenge, being afraid to take a risk, and always appearing to feel he had to live up to the Gerrard replacement mantle. He is a player who has flourished under Klopp to become one of the best midfield players and one of the best captains in the Premiership, and frankly, I’m surprised at people who don’t see that. But, hey, football is a game of opinions, right?
