12th March 2020 at 8:38 am in reply to: Champions League and Naughty Clubs: Round of 1/16 and 2/16 #84548Disappointing night, but an excellent performance undone by a moment of madness by Adrian. Agree with you, Mak, I thought Gini was sensational last night, with Hendo and Ox not far behind him. I do disagree with you about Mo though…I thought he was excellent last night (until his finishing), and was by a distance our most dangerous attacker. He had one great run in the 2nd half tricking his way past 2 or 3 defenders only to not even test Oblak. Robbo’s header should have been buried, and we all know now what a good keeper Oblak.
We were gutted walking out of the ground last night, but we have to remember we have won the league, and we all know how important that is to us and you all would have taken that back in August. It’s going to be a strange end of season now, in more ways than one obviously, but just think how many other clubs would gladly swap places with us right now. Probably all of them, bar City (as they want the CL and have won the Prem recently). Look at the joke Spurs have become since losing in Madrid last summer. Sacked their manager, hired a malevolent has-been, rumours of dressing room fall-outs etc etc. That could have been us after Kiev, but no…since then we have won the CL and the Premiership.
Anyway, reckon they’ll cancel the CL before the next round anyway cos of the virus!!

Wilson, Keane, Cutrone, Haller, even Rodrigez? Have they got 10 between them?

Brian…Bents is just down the road, 3 or 4 miles from me. Wouldn’t fancy cycling on the Lancs now!

442 – 2 routes spring to mind for me. A couple of years ago, the wife and I drove a large part of the Atlantic Way down the west coast of Ireland. Oh my God, it was a beautiful part of the world. From Malin Head at the most northern part of the island of Ireland down to the cliffs of Moher in County Clare, so through Donegal, Mayo and Galway was just simply stunning, and certainly north of Galway pretty unspoilt by tourism. Can well recommend it! The other is the road from Whistler to Jasper and then down to Banff in the Canadian Rockies. Round every corner there is another spectacular waterfall, snow capped mountain or glacier. Just beautiful.
Anyway got to go and drive the beautiful East Lancs A580 through Salford in to Manchester now!

So another pretty unconvincing performance on Saturday, but I guess the 3 points takes us nearer the Holy Grail, particularly with City’s result yesterday. A couple of encouraging points on Saturday were the performances of Milly, Ox and Salah, all of whom I thought did the right side of ok. Was surprised to see Sadio get MoM on a coupe of websites as I thought he was pretty poor again, summed up by his ball to Mo for Mo’s goal. The most undeserved assist of the season, I reckon. I don’t think it is any coincidence that one of our best players on the day was Milly, a leader like Hendo. Again like Hendo he was encouraging the team, berating the team and generally playing the leader that we have lacked recently. I think it likely he will start on Wednesday night now. As I left my seat at the end of the game on Saturday the lads who sit behind us joked that they will see us next season, as that will be the last game not behind closed doors. I can’t help feeling there is a bit of an over reaction to all this, but I guess I may be wrong. I do know the queues for the washbasins in the toilets at Anfield were a lot longer than normal!!
So Wednesday night? Will be undoubtedly a very tough night against a hard, uncompromising team led by an astute manager. I know that IF we play at our best we are more than capable of winning this tie comfortably, but the problem is that we are far from at our best at the moment. Hopefully the crowd will provide a bouncing atmosphere, an early goal (like Barca) may unnerve them, but we do have to stay patient. If it is still 0-0 after 70 minutes, don’t panic. But I really do see them scoring at some stage, and that will make life very difficult for us, and it could also suck the life out of the crowd.
Anyway, let’s hope for another famous Anfield night, and my lack of a voice on Thursday morning is down to cheering my head off rather than the coronavirus!

I think that team, Mav, would be playing with 10 men very quickly with Nil in defence. A Friday night game kicking off at about 10pm after he’s been on the sauce for an hour or two! 999 would be in goal so wouldn’t be able to mediate, Sean and Adlab would be arguing amongst themselves, and you and Chucky would be too busy comparing photos of Kylie and Belinda Carlisle!

You know, Chucky, letting Kane may not be the worst thing that could happen to Spurs. We sold our best player in Coutinho a few years ago, and we improved by signing Allison and VVD. All you need is a CEO who will let you spend the money and a manager who can spend the money wisely…oh, hang on! Yeah, I see your problem.

I know it was live on TV, and I know Sheff Wed aren’t having a great time of it, and I know it was on a Wed night, but under 21000 at Hillsborough to see the second best side in the country? Interest in the FA Cup really has plummeted. I remember Liverpool v Grimsby in the 3rd round in 1980 when there was 50000 in attendance. I can understand why the FA Cup has become less important to Premiership clubs, particularly those in Europe, but why did the Wednesday fans not come out and support their team last night? Out of those 21000, probably 3 or 4000 were City fans as well.

But now the pressure and hype is of a different nature. It’s now all the ‘have Liverpool been found out’ kind of hype which can have a similar effect. Thinking too much, trying too hard etc.
Mind you, we couldn’t wish for a better game than Bournemouth at home to try to put it all right, so we’ll see how they respond on Saturday

Can I just add my congratulations to Chelsea for last night. Thoroughly deserved win. I find it hard to dislike Chelsea now. It was easy in the days of Mourinho, Terry, Cole and Carvalho, but it’s hard to dislike Lampard and his young team now, though I still have an irrational hatred (maybe too strong a word!) of Giroud!!

Good post, Pagan, and I think you may well be right. But the gap they had in February doesn’t appear to have recharged their batteries at all…they now look leggy and devoid of ideas. Instead it looks to have removed all their intensity and togetherness.

442…don’t get me wrong, mate, of course the Premiership is our Holy Grail, and of course it’s been a fantastic season, regardless of what happens from now on. But it is going to be a strange end to the season if we go out next week. I’m not disappointed in the season overall, how could I be? But I am disappointed in the disintegration of our team ethic over the last few weeks. They had the opportunity to stamp their mark in history and they may still of course. But there are worrying signs and they need to shake themselves out of it…and quick!

Well, it’s all gone tits up over the past couple of weeks, hasn’t it? There are far too many of our top players who are a long way from their best form…VVD, Sadio, Fab, Robbo, Mo, Bobby…dare I say it, even Trent.
I’m sure it isn’t, but it almost has looked like complacency over the last few games. They’ve looked like they are not prepared to put the hard yards in, not prepared to scrap for every ball, not prepared to work for each other, and the strength of this team has always been exactly that…they are a team and they do scrap for each other, but not recently.
It’s too easy to say they are missing Hendo. Undoubtedly they are, but where are our other leaders? Why hasn’t VVD stepped up to the plate? We shouldn’t be so reliant on one player, but I feel that it is his leadership we are missing at the moment as much as anything else. We are short of leaders in this team. I really am relieved we have such a lead at the top of the Prem. If you’re going to have a blip, have it with a 22 point lead. But there is a real danger this season is going to fizzle out if we don’t get past Madrid, and at the moment that doesn’t look likely. Can you honestly see our defence keeping a clean sheet on current form? And if we don’t keep a clean sheet, can you honestly see us scoring 3 goals on current form?
We need to go out on Saturday and batter Bournemouth, which we are obviously capable of doing, and then hope that gives them confidence for next Wednesday

26th February 2020 at 12:17 pm in reply to: Champions League and Naughty Clubs: Round of 1/16 and 2/16 #767373 first legs played by English teams, and 3 defeats…and you’d say City probably have the hardest tie of the 4 games. I really hope City turn Madrid over. Of all the players currently still playing Sergio Ramos is the one I enjoy seeing suffer more than anyone, so to see him losing at home would be great.

Hi Pax – yeah, it as me that mentioned on the gameweek thread about the crowd. I was there last night, and the crowd was, as Mak says, apathetic. The league is won, whatever Klopp and the players say, and the crowd know that. It was a game last night that we should have walked in all honesty with West Ham being as woeful as they are. The crowd seemed to turn up expecting to be entertained and to see a routine victory. Ironically, the loudest the crowd was was when west Ham scored their second, and it was only then that they/we really got behind the team. No excuses…it was a poor effort from the crowd. And they better be careful what they wish for. If we lose against Chelsea in the FA Cup next week, and then fail to go through against Madrid the week after, then our season is effectively over, other than to go through the season unbeaten with a record points total. We’ll have two and a half months of effectively meaningless games.
There will be a cracking atmosphere against Madrid, of that I have no doubt, and the day we win the league (if we’re at home) will be party time, but the season will kind of fizzle out in a surreal fashion, as Mak says if we come unstuck in the cups. Bournemouth, Palace, Villa, Burnley and Chelsea are our home league games left, and I suppose with the exception of Chelsea, they aren’t really games to get the blood stirring, especially as the league will be wrapped up so early.

Keita was woeful last night, Sean. I must admit, I’m beginning to think he ain’t going to make it with us. Thought Gomez, Virgil and the front 3 were off the pace also. Even Allison could have done better for their first goal, though he did pull us out of the mire with his save at the end.
Man of the match between Gini, Trent and Robbo. Probably Trent for the 2 assists, but definitely a night to forget.
