Pagan…Spurs and Liverpool made enormous profits, and as I understand it, the furore was about them. The likes of Brighton, Bournemouth and Norwich do not pay their players £200k a week.
My point is that players can support who they want. If I were a player I would want to support the food banks etc rather than people who SHOULD never be put in a difficult situation by these cash rich clubs. The food banks, the African villagesand the nurses etc do not have the support networks that these employees of Spurs and Liverpool should have had.

999…I prefaced my post with ‘all due respect’ and I meant it.

Exactly my point, chaps. The clubs CAN afford to pay the other other employees 5 or 600 per week. Look at the profits Spurs and my team made last year. It was pathetic penny pinching by the clubs

999…with the greatest of respect that’s rubbish. It’s not the players or the taxpayers who should be supporting the Spurs staff, it’s the club itself. These clubs make multi million £ profits. The players should support whomsoever they wish to support. As I said in my earlier post many of them support local foodbanks, the NHS or their local communities back in their homelands, like Salah and Mane as well as , I’m sure some of them supporting fellow workers at their club. If I was a player at Spurs, or Liverpool if it comes to that, I would want to be absolutely sure where my pay cut or whatever was going.
Blame the clubs not the players.

Personally I think footballers are just an easy target for hancock and his cronies. Sure, they should be contributing but very many of them are already. Professions like film stars, rock and pop stars, TV presenters and moguls (Simon Cowell?) seem to have escaped the attack from Hancock. Now again, some of them or even many of them maybe are contributing to charities but so are football players. And even in Hancock’s own party, someone like Reees-Mogg is apparently worth £150m. If we somehow believe we have a right to know if players are pulling their weight, then surely we do about Rees-Mogg as well. At Liverpool, I know Robertson, Trent, Salah, Mane, VVD, and obviously Hendo have done good charitable acts in the last few weeks, and I’m sure it’s the same at every club.
Players are a soft target because they are overpaid and do a job we would all love to be doing, but don’t pander to the fashionable football bashing sport beloved by politicians and the gutter press! Many footballers care about their communities, either where they are now, or where they are from originally. Ask questions about Rees-Mogg, Murdoch, Branson, FTSE 100 CEO’s et al as well.

While I absolutely agree that there are far more important things than football right now, I don’t understand why people are worried about finishing this season having an impact on next season, i.e a season that hasn’t even started yet. For the integrity of the league, the current season has to be finished before the next can start. Even it means that next season is a shortened season i.e. no cup competitions or even a season where each team only play each other once, then so be it. The rules would be the same for everyone. How can next season already be more important than the season we are only 80% through?
By the way, my comment of a few weeks ago (I can’t remember exactly when) that I couldn’t help feeling that everyone was overreacting to the virus now appears facile and unthought through. So, my apologies for that. Like many of us on here I guess, I have a mother with COPD aged 85, living on her own who I now haven’t seen since the 7th March. Daily telephone calls are one thing, but I can only imagine how frightened the especially vulnerable are. I hope all are well, and my thanks and huge respect to all those who are both fighting on the front line against the virus, and also other essential workers who are keeping the country running in so many other ways.

Steveo – thinking of you, mate. Must be a real worry. Just try and stay positive, though I know that must be difficult especially in the current situation. At least Arsenal can’t depress you at the moment!!

It’s good, isn’t it, Sean? I ended up respecting Chris Coleman and a couple of the players, but it was the fans and the club staff I really felt for. But it really is worth dedicatinfg a few hours of your life to watch. Not just for Sunderland fans

I’ve just watched ‘Sunderland till I die’ available on Netflix. For anyone who needs their football fix, I can well recommend it. 10 episodes and it’s just a car crash and a perfect example of how not to run a football club. It’s brilliant…and I believe there is a 2nd series coming out in a week or two.

While I get all this and acknowledge that this is a full blown global health and economic disaster with the likely impacts still far away from being known, my starting a new thread to lighten the mood needs supporting. Conversations, TV news, newspaper news and indeed everything else is obviously dominated by what is happening in the world, but my favourite football forum has always been a bit of a light-hearted escape from what is a pretty miserable world in many ways.
I therefore urge people to think of shallower, more light hearted topics to discuss on this forum. If you’re not interested in my suggestion, then fine, come up with something else, but this forum will fizzle out if we’re all just pontificating and going round in circles about the one topic that is dominating our lives and will surely do so for months to come. And let’s face it. none of us know anything more than we hear on the news, so we’re going round in circles anyway.
If you think I’m wrong, tell me…I’ll apologise and leave you alone, but everything, and I mean everything is absolute apocalyptically shit at the moment and I think that there should be room for a bit of completely shallow and pointless debate between us.

Yeah, I know, mate. I’m just sick of reading about nothing but the virus, and I thought this exercise might lighten things up on here a little. There is only so much guesswork about restarting football I can read on this forum…ffs, let’s talk about something different for a while..
…but I guess not. I thought it might get an interesting debate going, but obviously not. I’m telling you, we need an alternative topic to the virus or this forum is going to fizzle out very quickly.

12th March 2020 at 9:03 am in reply to: Champions League and Naughty Clubs: Round of 1/16 and 2/16 #84564I agree, Moos. I thought the ref was pretty good last night. I wouldn’t like to be watching Atletico every week though!
