I’ve found it! A conspiracy against Liverpool…
When this new seasonβs fixtures were announced in August, our collective sigh was that of a club and set of supporters now used to being burdened with difficult batches of opening games. We always get Arsenal early doors. We always get Chelsea away. Itβs hard to remember when we last had a set of first 10 games that didnβt feature a disproportionate amount of contests against top-six rivals.
Let us add to the sense of being hard done by, the fact that this term, we also seem to be being forced to play sides at precisely the wrong time β a vibrant in form Leeds team flush with the confidence of winning the Championship. Chelsea on the back of a first day win, Arsenal flying and now an Aston Villa side boasting a still intact 100 per cent record.
Liverpool have yet to face a team who have dropped any points. And by the way, after the international break our next opponents are Everton, who thus far are also word perfect with three wins from three league games.
…courtesy of The Anfield Wrap!
Joking aside though, it is amazing that our first 5 games will all be against teams that haven’t yet dropped a point

Shoulda said. United have PSG, Istanbul and Leipzig. City have Porto, Olympiakos and Marseilles and Chelsea have Sevilla, Krasonadar and Rennes

Bollocks! Not to you, Mak, but I was three quarters of the way through a long post praising our team and club, my phone went and I lost the post!
In a nutshell, we are blessed to be watching this team. 50 years ago this year I went to my first game, but I can honestly say I believe this is as strong in team in every sense of the word as I have ever seen represent Liverpool. They need a few more trophies to really be classed with the 87 or 78 teams, but just everything is so good right now, apart from not actually being able to watch them live. From boardroom to backroom staff, from manager to first team, and crucially from reserves to transfers, we’ve never had it so good. There just are no weaknesses.
And last night was without Hendo and Thiago!
I’ve put this on the Liverpool thread so as not to antagonize our other posters and i dont wish it to appear too arrogant, but God I’m enjoying it. Even Robbo’s mistake last night just galvanized the team to greater efforts. Maybe they should have killed the game earlier but let’s not forget Arsenal were also unbeaten, and while I take Steveos point about Arsenals set up and tactics, we blew them off the park. Never doubted we’d win it even if they’d got a second.
And Mak, you’re right…Jota looked the real deal. Minamino looks better and better each time he plays. Hendo and Thiago to come back, and let’s not forget Curtis Jones who I think will be a real talent. The reserves win against Lincoln increased my optimism as well. They played with an intensity and flair that mirrored the first team, albeit against a League One side.
It truly is a good time to be a Red. Was it you,Sean, who seeing our first 3 games predicted one point? Instead we have outplayed 2 of our likely close challengers, one on their own ground, and all of our rivals have looked fragile at points this season.
Enjoy it while it lasts, because when Villa turn us over on Sunday, I’ll delete this post! π€£π€£

Mane was out of this world tonight. Jota must have been on the bench and thinking should have stayed at Wolves!

Excellent performance that. Aubameyang never got a sniff. Tough opening 3 games and 9 points. Will do nicely

How was Christiansen playing for Chelsea today? Didn’t he get a straight red against us last Sunday? Isn’t that a 3 match ban?

Minamino and Jones were outstanding. The whole team showed a desire and a hunger that a reserve team sometimes doesn’t, if you know what I mean. They played with exactly the same intensity as you would expect to see from the first team. It was refreshing to see. Mak, dunno where you heard VVD was poor. He strolled through the first half, and we conceded the goals after he’d gone off!

Predicted team for tonight…
Adrian
Williams Koumetio Fab Tsmikas
Keita Milner Jones
Jota Minamino Elliott…with probably one or two big names on the bench
What do you reckon?

I honestly find it difficult to see what we need right now. Arguably the best keeper in the world, best right and left backs in the world, best centre back, Mo, Sadio and maybe even Thiago and Fab have no peers in their positions. So possibly only Gomez, Hendo and Bobby can be improved on for the first eleven, and none of them are too shabby! I guess the best way of looking at it is if any got injured and how big a drop in quality that would mean. I’d be worried if Trent was out for a long time. While Williams looks as though he could develop, he’s a long way off yet. Matip or Fab in for the centre backs, any number of options in midfield like Naby, Gini, Ox and Curtis, and Jota and Minamino up top. I really don’t think we need anything. Sounds arrogant, doesn’t it? Anyone we buy has to be prepared to sit on the bench (probably the reason we didn’t get Werner, and you’re unlikely to get a true great who is prepared to do that.
As I’ve said before, the only player currently playing in the Prem that would definitely walk in to our team is KDB, and we ain’t going to get him. Of course next year when players may leave, it’s different so we do have to think of the future which is where Jota comes in, I presume.
Interesting times, and a great time to be a Liverpool fan!

I’m really surprised we’re still in for Sarr. I would have thought Jota and maybe Elliott would be ample cover for the front 3, not to mention Minamino. Sarr wont come cheap either. It does suggest that one of the 3 may be on their way.
Like you, Mak, I’d be sorry to see Gini go. He’s a good guy and has done some really good things for our club but I suppose he sees the writing on the wall with the number of midfielders at the club now. I think when all fit the first choice 3 would be Hendo, Fab and Thiago and with Naby, Milly, Ox and Jones also around it could be argued we have at least one too many midfielders. And I suppose the chance to play for his mate Koeman at the faded giant that is Barca is a good option for him.
