Yeah, Ed, I agree with Alfie’s assessment of that penalty. There is no way VAR would have overturned that, whatever the ref’s decision had been. There was enough contact to instill an element of doubt either way…it certainly wasn’t a clear and obvious error. Though, frankly, nothing VAR does now surprises me!

4th December 2023 at 12:01 pm in reply to: Weekend Football – Gameweek 14 – December is here! #211103Nil..I’ve got to pull you up on your ‘Kelleher is an absolute Liability. Please bring back Adrian’ comment. Talk about kneejerk reaction! While Kelleher didn’t have his best game yesterday, you can’t really be serious about wanting Adrian in. Kelleher is a young lad, who has not had a lot of football recently, but has great potential, if only to get Liverpool a decent transfer fee next summer, and Adrian is way, way past his best. Don’t you remember his last outings in a Liverpool shirt?

I was so sad to read those words from @Sonof999. As everyone in the above posts have expressed so eloquently, he will be sorely missed on here, and on Teamtalk. Obviously like others on here, I never met him, but he was always the voice of good sense and reason when others, including myself, had temporarily lost both of those qualities. I hope his family will gain some meagre amount of solace from seeing how loved and respected he was on here, and my thoughts are with the, RIP 999

Can’t quite bring myself to congratulate City, but have to admit that was a pretty frightening performance. Best hope is that City win the treble and Pep decides he’s had enough!
Well done, Gary! You going to Istanbul?

Oh, I’ve missed Adlab’s ‘the world’s against us’ comments. Lol. I know all fans, whatever their club, feel decisions go against you, but wake up, Adlab, your club have won the lottery, play the best football, have arguably the best manager, the best goalscorer in world football, the best midfielder in world football, and STILL get just as many decisions go for you as go against you (just like any other club)

Oh my Goodness, missed this thread first time round, and only just caught up now. 9, I’m so very sorry, my friend. You have been the voice of moderation on here and Teamtalk for so long now I feel I know you. I will be thinking of you and I hope you continue to get enjoyment out of football and the garbage we all write on here for as long as possible. My prayers will be with you.

Mikus…when you say everyone is going to have to double their efforts, I’m assuming you don’t mean double their efforts from Bournemouth. Cos doubling the lack of effort shown on Saturday still won’t be nearly enough. I’ve lost all faith in this team at the moment.

27th December 2022 at 3:05 pm in reply to: January Transfers 2023 (All I Want For Christmas is….) #201874Sean, I’m absolutely with you. And, Ed, he has 9 goals and 3 assists in the league so far this season, and is averaging a goal every 124 minutes. Werner would have chopped off his right leg for stats like that…oh, hang on, maybe he did which would explain alot.
Nunez is far from the finished article, I’ll agree, but he has contributed alot already, and with a little more luck he’d have even better stats. He’s certainly found the woodwork a few times. I’m not sure he’ll ever be a world beater like Haaland, but those who write him off this early in his Premiership career risk being made to look very silly further down the line

27th December 2022 at 12:29 pm in reply to: January Transfers 2023 (All I Want For Christmas is….) #201863From the little I know about him, he can play a variety of positions. Jota, latterly at least, has struggled to score goals, and seems to be picking up more and more injuries (and long term ones at that). Gakpo fits the age profile required and fits the versatile profile that Mane gave us. I can see in 2 or 3 years Diaz, Nunez and Gakpo being our front three. Obviously at this stage none of us know if he will be a success, but I would hope that Klopp will be able to improve him, in much the same way that he has improved countless players in his time at the club. Time will tell of course, but I am hopeful.
None of this, however, changes my opinion that midfielders should be the immediate priority!

27th December 2022 at 11:17 am in reply to: January Transfers 2023 (All I Want For Christmas is….) #201860threeps – I think this signing signals the end for Bobby. He’s free to talk to other clubs in January, and I think it’s best for both parties if he does go, probably in the summer. We have had diminishing returns in terms of his effectiveness over the last year or two, and he’ll be on big wages. Would be really sad to see him go as he has been my favourite player for much of his time at Anfield, but all good things come to an end. Now for a midfielder or two…or three!

27th December 2022 at 10:28 am in reply to: January Transfers 2023 (All I Want For Christmas is….) #201858You know, Ed, I do have mixed feelings about Gakpo…not overly excited, just more concerned that the deal doesn’t mean we’re not pursuing Bellingham.
However with Gakpo, I remember feeling exactly this way on the signings of both Salah and Mane….and they turned out reasonably successful!

Nil…just cos we’ve had a fantastic final and a tournament full of good matches should never stop anyone questioning Qatear or ‘having reservations’ about the Tournament.
Having said that, what a brilliant final and my pre Tournament bet of Argentina to win and Mbappe to win the Golden Boot has come off!!!! Mind you just pays off the earlier losses!!

Real shame last night, as I thought they played very well as they had throughout much of the tournament. I thought that last night Saka and Rice were truly top class. It was a shame that Shaw and Foden on the other flank couldn’t really impose themselves, but it is undoubtedly an opportunity missed, but the future is still bright, and I really hope Southgate stays as manager. After all, who would replace him? Bit short of likely candidates

Adlab…why wouldn’t you have female commentators or pundits? Robyn Cowen is an excellent commentator and Alex Scott talks alot more sense than many of the ex player male pundits. The crucial thing is whether they are any good or not…their gender is totally irrelevant.
Jonathan Pearce, Sam Matterface or Robyn Cowen? Easy choice for me, and it ain’t Pearce or Matterface.

I’m with you, Ed. I don’t really see what Mount brings to the table, particularly when you have alternatives like Foden available. I suppose Mount brings more defensive solidity, and that was obviously what Southgate wanted last night. I just hope for the Wales game, Southgate recognises the benefits (probably) in finishing top of the group rather than second, but experience suggests he’ll be more intent in ensuring we don’t lose by four goals, or whatever it is

Well that was 90 minutes of my life I’ll never get back. Just a very poor performance. Thought Mount and Sterling were particularly anonymous and Bellingham should have knocked £10m off his transfer fee.

Unai Emery seems to be unnecessarily restricting himself in clubs he manages…VILLAreal, SeVILLA, Aston VILLA. think he even managed David VILLA at one stage!
Hey ho, boring day at work!

I think the argument is more for the floating football fan. An ardent Cheltenham fan (if there is such a thing) will continue to go and watch his team. But my situation, for example, is a case in point. If Liverpool are playing on a Sunday and with me living in Manchester, I will occasionally pop along to watch Salford City if they are at home. I have also been known to turn up at Crewe, Oldham and Rochdale. If there was a Prem game on TV, would I still go? I honestly don’t know. I would still go if it was just another EFL game certainly, but Prem, I don’t know.
I don’t have an issue with the 3pm blackout personally, and if it does have an adverse effect on lower league teams by lifting it, then I am strongly against it. Maybe it’s a bit different for me as I go to my team’s games anyway, but for those of you who live in Finland, South Africa and Germany, you get the 3pm anyway, don’t you?
