You are correct, Sean. Very strange set up, tactically, by Pep last night – playing three at the back without recognised wing backs is bizarre. Sterling and Mahrez out wide, Rodri, Gundogan and KdB in the middle, Bernardo with a free role (I think) and Aguero up top; it could have back-fired.
Having said that, de Gea made 2/3 very good saves and we squandered (trying to walk the ball in) at least 3 clear-cut opportunities. In addition, United had only four attempts on our goal and while watching the game, you had the feeling that United didn’t really believe they could go through to the final.
If we’d put 2/3 of our chances away, the (fickle) press would be hailing another tactical masterstroke. Fine margins and all that….._____________________________

Cheers Brian, I’ll be on it tomorrow.
I know £1.99 is cheap but do ST holders not get it for free?_____________________________

Brian, where do I find the David Silva film?

Brian, I hear what you say. Commitment he has, it’s his over-commitment that lets him down on many occasions. He’s a bit like Stones in that he looks competent alongside a strong CB (eg. Kompany/Laporte)
I don’t think today was a game to judge him on, after them going down to 10 early on._____________________________

Proper cup tie, wonderful stuff.
Shrewsbury fully deserve their replay and with better finishing could have won the game.
Lovren…………………..I thought Ottomendi was bad._____________________________

Apologies, I digressed somewhat with the second part of that last post – perhaps should have been on the CTID thread.

Mak, fully agree re more teams challenging for the title – Leicester and Wolves would be very welcome. Just had a good chat with a Liverpool fan at work and we both agreed that it’s great to win the title by a ‘landslide’ (on one occasion at least) but it’s also good to have some competition right to the end. Winning the title with the Agueroooooo goal, although not doing much for my health, really was the best moment I’ve experienced in football and whenever it’s shown on tv, it still sends a shiver down my spine.
In respect of Fernandinho, lots have said the loss of Laporte has cost us dearly. It has, but equally key, as you pointed out, is the switch of Ferna to CB. Although Rodri has done reasonably well in his first PL season, we lost Ferna’s range of passing – something he, unjustly, doesn’t get much credit for and his innate ability to read a game, which in itself can provide protection for the defence.
We may sign another CB in the summer but Pep, much like JK, won’t make a signing just for the sake of it. The emergence of Eric Garcia and the potential of Harwood-Bellis, I hope, means we don’t need any extra cover in that position now._____________________________

Mak, you’d have had no arguments from me if you’d said that two months ago. An absolute powerhouse season from Liverpool built on pace, commitment, high press (and for the majority of every game), good technical ability, and attack and defend as a full unit. In addition, you have a great manager.
Already looking at next season and wondering how the hell do you stop them – Pep will have his ideas but not sure many other managers will. Having said that, having ideas and actually implementing them can be poles apart.
Won’t offer congrats until it’s mathematically possible, so no offence meant. But very well done._____________________________

Brian @ 3:52pm yesterday:
I take it you forgot about KdB 🙂
And what about Sane. We really could do with keeping hold of him – real game changer and better than Sterling when his mind is on it. However, imo, he himself is set on a move back to Germany (BM). I just hope we don’t let him go for peanuts, £80m minimum.
As for replacements, I’m like you and have no idea – we just have to trust Pep to make the right choices as he has previously, in the main._____________________________

Just to add to your points Brian, Mendy is looking fitter with each game and getting some pace back. Cancelo, although took a while to adapt to the PL, in now looking a lot more comfortable. And Stones always looks far more confident playing alongside a dominant CB, so in that respect (aside from the obvious reason), the return of Laporte can’t come soon enough.

Although winning, a number of Liverpool performances have been somewhat underwhelming this season; however, tonight they really were ‘at it’.
Wonderful team performance – 10/10If they play anywhere near to that level for the remainder of the season, sadly, they’ll smash our 100 points total.

22nd December 2019 at 12:07 am in reply to: Week 18: Yule Never Have A Better Chance To Win…. To Win… With Hope In Your. #57182I’d be very surprised if they were City fans, Threeps. I don’t know one Blue who didn’t want us to win today. I’m 90% sure the title is going to Anfield this season but City will always have my support even when it’s mathematically impossible for us to win it.

21st December 2019 at 2:18 pm in reply to: Week 18: Yule Never Have A Better Chance To Win…. To Win… With Hope In Your. #57123This is definitely the worse game of PL football I’ve watched for a long time. You’d think they would want to impress their watching new managers but no. I’ve not seen either team string more than four passes together.
I’ve had enough – off to the pub then on to the game later._____________________________

Goalkeepers who comfortably catch a ball and then flop down in a pathetic attempt to waste time – don’t they realise they look so stupid.

Had to check this was the LC thread.
All credit to Oxford tonight, playing the game the right way. They made it very tough for us, especially in the second half and the scoreline doesn’t reflect the way the game panned out. I can’t recall any team making us look so disorganised over the past couple of years – admittedly, we did have a number of youngsters in the team, with a 17 and 18 yo playing CBs, who both played well.
Anyway into the SF and a decent lineup – Villa, United and the Foxes.
Good luck to Karl Robinson and his team for the rest of the season._____________________________

The Liverpool youngsters did ok first 30 mins and a bit unlucky with the first two Villa goals. However, I really can’t see any benefit in sending them out, to what now looks like a humiliation for them – won’t do them any good whatsoever. Surely the better option would have been to split the squads for these next two games – some experience would have at least given Liverpool a chance tonight and the ‘other’ squad easily good enough to dispose of Monterrey. The experienced players could then have flown out to join the rest in Qatar for the final.

Clinical.
An absolute masterclass from KdB.
Very poor showing by the Arsenal fans, booing their team off at HT. I recall a good few years ago, City were 4-0 down to Arsenal at HT and the City fans applauded Arsenal off the pitch at the break. Like I said, very poor from them._____________________________
