Mav – “Brian- I have no idea who they are but it seems some fans are happy for him to leave.”

I am a member of a sizeable Whatsapp City fan group. Needless to say there’s been a hell of a lot of chat since last night’s match but I can honestly say there has not been one contributor saying Pep should go.

The CL is a massive competition, probably the biggest in world club football. However, it is not the be all or end all in football. To my mind, playing attractive football and being entertained are more important. Yes, I was bitterly disappointed last night but mainly with the way we played and the team selection. Had we gone out with ‘all guns blazing’ for the full 90 minutes, my disappointment would have been much less. Just saying.

Hi Andy. “I’m aware this might seem that I’m a gloating Liverpool fan…” Not at all, I know you better than that mate.
Regarding Sterling, you cannot argue with his goals tally or even his assists. Imo though, and I’ve felt this from the time he signed, his decision making at key times in a game is still somewhat questionable. It has improved under Pep but I feel it shows a bit of a lack of football nous. You mentioned Sane but as an overall package, Sterling is the better player – Sane’s concentration and attitude (at times) let him down. Sane’s biggest asset to the team was that he brought something different, another option. Still think we didn’t get full value for him off the German bullies though.
Kyle Walker was probably our MoM against RM but last night he was asked to do something he’s not totally comfortable with – an out and out wing back, and at times, certainly in the first half and until Mahrez came on, was left covering the whole of our right.
We can forget Garcia, he’s off back to Spain. Laporte suffered an horrendous injury and will take time to get back to previous levels. The introduction of Ake, we hope will help but there’s no guarantees.
What puzzles me is the recent handling of Bernardo Silva, who appears out of favour as a starter at present – we certainly missed his energy and mobility in the middle of the park.
What else do we need going forward? Brian mentioned another 4/5 players. Certainly Pep should be targeting another CB (offloading Ottamendi and Garcia) and two young, quick full backs. Another striker would also be handy.

Mav and Moos – yeah, definitely Pep at fault. I covered off what was wrong with team selection in my post last night. Three CBs, one of which wants to go back to Spain, no creativity in CMF, wrong choice of FBs (especially Cancelo on the left), KdB wasted out wide on right in 1st half………………ah well, next year will be our year ?

Yeah, I think that’s right 3ps, it is a PL rule. Same thing, just the other way round (if that makes sense???).

I think it’s a UEFA rule lads, where loanees can play against their parent club. Patrick Roberts was on loan from us to Celtic a few years back and he played against us, in the group stages, at the Etihad and scored in a 1-1 draw.

“City, its scary how a one-man team they have become! Without KDB they are just like Barcelona without Messi. As for Pep,a complete failure in the CL the last 7 seasons

Thanks Mav for rubbing it in. It feel shit enough as it is tonight ?

Pep got it so, so wrong tonight, it’s quite unbelievable. Play three at the back, no creativity in the centre of mf and KdB wasted on the right (first half). And if you are going to play three at the back, at least play with more mobile, attacking full backs – Mendy would have been a far better option than the predominantly right footed Cancelo. Also, why play a young CB who has stated his desire to return to Spain.
Having said that you can’t legislate far Sterling’s howler of a miss, one that he’ll see over and over again on tv in the coming months (and years possibly). And yet another joke of a var decision for Lyon’s second goal – definitely not offside but a clear trip on Laporte. I thought this system was introduced in to eliminate “clear and obvious errors”.
On the bright side, it saves a humiliation at the hands of the German bullies – certainly one that would have materialised had we qualified and played like that.

Thoroughly deserved win – absolutely bossed them second half and had we been more clinical (or less selfish) in front of goal, it would have been more comfortable.
How the hell does Verane keep Laporte out of the French team.

Grow up Threeps………….or are you pissed?
“Ridiculous penalty given to Madrid. Free kick to Madrid and the shot hit’s Depay’s hand but his arms are down. Nothing he could of done but it was given”
Fyi, we played Madrid – it was Juventus that got that penalty. ?

The word ‘legend’ is banded around all too easily in football these days but in David Silva’s case it couldn’t be more appropriate. Eleven trophies (15 if you count the CS, as some do) in ten years, never gave less than a 7/10 performance, an unassuming personality and never a bad word for anyone.
He has amazing balance, vision, ball control and always willing to accept the ball, even in the tightest situations.
As a City fan, it has been an absolute pleasure to watch him live over the last 10 years.
Good luck to you in the future Dav, in whatever you undertake.
You will be sorely missed at the Etihad (but not too much on the pitch, hopefully).
                      Legend you surely are.

                        Hands off KdB.
But as we’re on the subject of coveting opposition players, if City had VvD, they would be the complete team.

                          A very enjoyable watch.
But a very strange game in some ways. Liverpool could have been a couple up in the first 15 minutes but then our midfield regained some control, with KdB starting to pull the strings. The first 5 minutes of the second half, we could and should have really put the game to bed, missing three glorious opportunities. Then after the fourth, the game petered out somewhat.
The importance of the game/result at this stage is irrelevant but it should give us a big boost for the remainder of the season in the FA Cup and CL.

Must say, I’ve hardly watched Sky Sports over the last coupe of weeks but tuned in today:
                                  1. Kyle Walker needs to be severely disciplined and possibly sacked – tit.
                                  2. Very sad to see five PL clubs take ADVANTAGE of the Governments furlough, especially Spurs and Liverpool, who made Β£115m and Β£35m profit, respectively last year (not 100% certain of the figures but I don’t think they’re far out). The players surely should be asked to help out non-playing colleagues.
                                  3. Can’t believe PL players haven’t come to an agreement over salary cuts, and only 30%? Their argument being, it will take Β£200m out of the Government’s coffers and potentially the NHS – for their information, it’s closer to Β£250m, because I’m pretty sure there aren’t any PL players who don’t pay Additional Rate Tax (45% over Β£150k pa). I’ll give them an idea, how about making direct contributions (equivalent to at least 30%) to the NHS out of net pay. Everyone’s a winner.

                                  RANT OVER

Everyone and their nearest and dearest stay safe.

Chelsea v Liverpool was a very good cup tie to watch for the neutral, especially the first half, played at pace, with good technique and end to end. Not seen anything of Billy Gilmour before but must say he had an excellent game.
One thing that did surprise me was the way Liverpool seemed to tire in the last 15/20 minutes. I believe they are the fittest team in the PL and often ‘press’ for almost the full 90, hence the number of late and often important goals they score. However, last night they looked ‘leggy’ and applied very little pressure on the Chelsea goal late on. What do the Liverpool lads on here think?

I really don’t think it’ll come to cancelling all remaining fixtures – it has too many issues. Although the title is ‘done and dusted’, there’s relegations, promotions and CL and Euro places to play for. If the worst came to the worst, surely they would just play games behind closed doors.
