Bruno Fernandes continuing to perpetuate the belief he can only play well against shit sides. He’s been anonymous so far in this tournament.
Germany are looking very good! I’d hate to be drawn against them at the moment._____________________________

Sean, we even got outplayed by Sweden and Colombia! I agree, he has beaten no big teams in big comps so far. Croatia are no longer a big team. Beat Spain and Belgium in the Nation’s League but no one seems to take that seriously.

I agree about the celebrity pedestal comment. Gascoigne was undoubtedly one of the most talented, if not the most talented footballer this country has produced. However, on the England stage how much did he actually deliver? If you look at other country’s greatest products, they’ve all pretty much won a shitload of national honours and a shitload of caps. Gascoigne had 57 caps and 10 goals. Now you hear about Grealish being labelled the new Gascoigne, well I hope not, I hope he is better.
I like Grealish but the way people go on about him you would think he is one of the best footballers in the world right now. He simply isn’t and isn’t even close to that conversation. He has so far to go in his learning. For me he is too selfish and thinks he is the one that always has to unlock the opposition. I think the pressure from both the media and the fact that Villa operate a “give it to Grealish” tactic is stopping him from developping further. All I saw from him today was hogging the ball and slowing down play trying to draw fouls.
Foden on the otherhand plays with great players week in, week out and understands his position as part of a team. If he carries on playing for City then he could become our greatest ever product._____________________________

@DirtyHarry, unlike the British media, I couldn’t give a flying #### about the England Manager’s personal life or business dealings. They are employed to do a job managing the England team and for me Venables did that brilliantly when it mattered most. I can’t begin to imagine the wonders he could have achieved with the Golden Generation if he had it.

I know this is controversial, but I would say Dyche would make a good England coach. In my opinion a National Team Coach needs to be primarily a great communicator and motivator. You have so little time with your squad that you wouldn’t get enough time to really bed in your style of football. For instance, I don’t think Pep would make a good national team coach for that reason. Now Dyche is amazing at getting the maximum from very little, we might not play pretty under him but you can guarantee fight from his players. If you look back at the supposed master tacticians we have had as previous England managers they have failed as they are shit man-managers. The two best England managers of the last 30 years were both great man-managers (Robson and Venables). Neither enforced particularly attractive football but we still speak of their teams 30 years on

OK,what I like Southgate for is, he understands the culture, he knows what was wrong with it in previous generations from being part of it. He has addressed that really well. He has also put confidence in youth to express themselves by constantly picking a young squad. I applaud all of that.
What I don’t like him for is, he is tactically inept. What I saw against Croatia is exactly the same tactics as we employed in the WC. Some will say well that’s good, we got to the semis, but let’s be honest, we faced some pretty shit or average teams to get there. The one time we played anyone with any real steel we looked second rate. To be fair, we looked second rate against Colombia and Sweden in the knockouts. The tactics Southgate seemed to employ was go out really hard really early in the game get a goal up and then try and sit back. The reality was, we didn’t have the midfield quality to absorb that kind of possession, even against Sweden and Colombia! I saw the same tactic against Croatia the other day. This concerns me. If you’re going to sit back and absorb, you still need an attacking outlet and in the WC those games were crying out for Vardy or someone similar to be brought on instead of Kane to keep a threat and not allow the opposition to keep pushing forward._____________________________

I seem to recall looking at Kane’s record of goals he has scored for England and off memory they are mostly against lesser oppositions.
Ok, just went and checked, here are the oppositions:
Lithuania
San Marino
Switzerland
Germany
Turkey
Scotland
France
Malta
Slovenia
Nigeria
Tunisia
Panama
Columbia
Croatia
Czech Rep
Montenegro
Bulgaria
Kosovo
Albania
Poland_____________________________

Obviously delighted with the win, but certainly not getting carried away based on that performance against a Croatia who, sure aren’t mugs but really aren’t that great either. Our attack looked disjointed.
Mings was excellent, Phillips even better. Walker was terrible!_____________________________

many a striker has been successful elsewhere and then been crap at Chelsea though. Torres, Shev, Lukaku, Salah, Falcao

I mean I understand that strikers/forwards are judged by their goals but there are plenty of good strikers/forwards of the game that would fall foul of your method of judgment there Nine. Heskey is one, yet he played 60 odd times for England.
Is Chris Sutton nothing special? He is constantly talked about as being one half of an amazing partnership and yet his PL goals to game ratio is worse than Viduka’s. Viduka scored 92 goals over 240 games. That’s a healthy return in any striker’s book. He was blighted by injuries so if you base it over seasons, sure it doesn’t look good. Similar for Dwight Yorke. He has a lower goals per game ratio than Viduka. Same for Sheringham._____________________________

If Southgate plays a back 3 then I would go Chilwell as he offers more going forward. Shaw if it’s a back 4. I agree, Shaw was shithouse on the run home, Chilwell was outstanding. Another thing is, does Shaw need Maquire alongside him to perform. The last Manu games without Maguire suggested so.

many good strikers have done their time in the SPL before coming here and doing well (Viduka, Larsen, Van Hoijdonk, Di Canio)

yes, but if you don’t finish top you very quickly get turfed out. To date he’s only really proven himself in Aus and Japan, where he’s won everything on offer, so Scotland will be a step up

If the rumours are correct and we are in for Edouard from Celtic, we could be about to sign yet another bargain. Only just seen his highlights reel, I know it’s only the SPL but fuck he’s good!

France will come down to if they make it out of their group. They are notorious for being shit in group stages. If they get to the knockout phase I wouldn’t bet against them.
My heart wants Belgium (if not England, can’t see it happening tbh)
My brain says France
My gut says Portugal_____________________________

Celtic have just announced Postecoglu as their manager. This will be very interesting as his style of play is very much the Pep brand, which takes a considerable amount of time to bed into a team. However, once you get it right it’s beautiful to watch. Postecoglu has been successful pretty much everywhere over the last 10 years but this will be his sternest test. I do hope Celtic give him more than one season to prove himself as it will be well worth it if it pays off.

If Chelsea add Harland and can maybe add another CB to their stocks I would be betting on Chelsea next year to take the crown. The thought of having a front three of Havertz, Harland and Werner, with Mount behind them and Pulisic as an impact sub. That would scare any team out there!

I still reckon Ward-Prowse should be getting a ticket! It seems the midfield he has picked is either players who are attacking mids or defensive mids. WP offers both in my opinion, a true no.8. I would be giving TAA’s spot to him.
