Good to see Pogba’s ego didn’t take a hit over the summer

I said it too at the time. I think it was exactly the same day that Arteta was announced as Arsenal manager, Everton announced Ancelotti. I thought the announcements had been accidentally been misreported and swapped. I couldn’t believe it. One club was showing the extent of their ambitions and the other was showing they were happy to continue on their slide towards mediocrity.
Arsenal as a club are now in a very dangerous position. I can’t imagine ANY established player worth their salt would move to Arsenal from now on. They will have to rely on unearthing hidden gems either from lower leagues or lesser European leagues. As soon as a good player is in demand from a top 6 club in either Italy, England, France, Spain or Germany then Arsenal will have no chance of signing said player.
Imagine if Auba was still in Germany, he was one of the hottest properties in European football at the time, if he was on the market now, no way in hell would he choose Arsenal.
They are in serious trouble IMO, I really can’t see them making the top 10. Arteta may well prove to become a good manager in the future but I’ve seen it time and time again, assistant managers failing to make the step up to take on the top job, it’s a completely different task! He is well out of his depth and it doesn’t sound like the players are bought into him._____________________________

Obviously still so early, but surely Diet Pepsi is odds on favourite now to be the first managerial casualty of the season!
Anyone else go straight to the TT Arsenal board straight after the game with excitement, or was it just me?

Was just thinking, with Lukaku’s latest transfer, does this make him the most expensive football player in history. So far in his career, he has been the subject of 278m Pounds worth of transfers!

Thing is, the league shouldn’t have been a competition for PSG last season either. I mean they already had a crazy team compared to the rest of the league. Poch not winning last season was crazy!

1/ City
2/ Chelsea
3/ Liverpool
4/ Leicester/Man UThe last position for me is a toss up. I think both teams are vulnerable to key player injuries. Man U had very few last season and showed that when Bruno didn’t play Man U didn’t score. If we can keep our key players fit I think we can do it this time around.
Chelsea position for me hinges on getting Lukaku_____________________________

Quite possibly the most absurd transfer I’ve ever seen, maybe Coutinho just beats it, but Grealish is right up there.
For all of City’s spending under Pep, none of them have really been this outrageous. As I said in a previous post, in this area of the field they already have, Mahrez, Foden, Jesus, Sterling, Gundogan, KDB, Torres, Silva, all of which I rate as being far better footballers than Grealish. If he was 21 and still developping I’d maybe understand, but he’s nearly 26 FFS. Crazy stuff!_____________________________

Just when I thought we might be able to have an extended period of players with no big injuries, Fofana goes and does a clean break of his leg in the preseason friendly today. Terrible tackle from behind!

I actually don’t think he will improve City. I think City will improve him, but not the other way around. I would rate, Foden, KDB, Mahrez, Jesus, Gundogan as all far better players than Grealish.
I will be really shocked if Pep goes for Grealish

Pogba’s problem at ManU always appeared to be mental for me. He rarely looks interested. His ego gets the better of him and he seems to think that he can just put in 60% effort and that his skills are so good that it’s good enough to beat his opponents. That’s the impression I get from him.

agreed re: Newcastle, that should never have happened, even with Evans out.
As for Spurs, Evans didn’t start and was out and Fofana went off injured after 21 mins. He was replaced by Mendy, who is a defensive mid and was actually released by us in the off-season, that’s how little we thought of him. Again, highlighting my point about a lack of depth. Bale’s pace completely exploited that. Until he came on they were very lucky in getting to a draw and with us needing to win to get the CL spot they brought on Bale to exploit our forward push and inexperienced backline_____________________________

Yeah, Ed that’s a tough one. No other team could have competed for so long the way Leicester have the last two seasons with the injuries we have had. Not even Liverpool can claim quite the impact of players we had. Sure they had some important player injuries but they still had a decent squad to call upon.
The COVID hit season we simply ran out of players and squad depth was just not there. This season just gone, we started the first 6 games without a single first choice player in our back 5. With such a small squad, we just couldn’t cope with the following players being out for extended periods of time:
Ndidi
Maddison (was never the same after his injury)
Vardy (was never the same after his injury lay off and besides has lost his shooting boots anyway)
Soyuncu
Evans
Ricardo
Castagne
Justin
Barnes
PraetTielemans and Schmeichel were about the only two players who didn’t have a decent amount of time out through injury last season. When the rest of the squad is either youth players or over 30s has-beens (Fuchs, Morgan, Albrighton) I think it is fair to say Rodgers keeping us in the top 4 for so long was a miracle!

I honestly haven’t felt this excited and confident about my side prior to a season starting than this one. The signings we have made so far look excellent. If reports are correct and we sign Kabak and Daniel James, I would be really confident of a top 4 finish. Both players fit our criteria in age and potential. James really fits the bill as a Leicester player.

I really do not rate Ole as a manager and I think he will be their downfall. They have had the squad to challenge for over a year now and haven’t. I also think ManU got lucky with injuries last season. If some one of or even both of Maguire and Fernandes get injured they are in trouble. They showed last season, no Fernandes, no creativity.

I’m going the top 4 as City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Leicester. If Chelsea sign a top top striker I could be persuaded to go Chelsea for the league. ManU won’t make top 4, Ole will get found out and sacked.

I’ve always thought Maguire is quality but he does require a fast CB alongside him. His organisation, leadership and physical dominance is outstanding, as is his passing range.

Sean, I actually agree with you. I would prefer that we go for it with the talent we have than sit back. What I was trying to say was that if you are going to use the tactic Southgate was using then you still need to have a counter-attacking outlet to keep their defence from pushing too high. Essentially that is how Leicester line up against the good possession teams. they sit deep, but the very threat of Vardy with a long ball over the top is enough to stop their defenders from pushing up too high on us. Southgate didn’t have that outlet with Kane as the sole striker and so that just allowed the Italian CBs to push higher and higher and press the hell out of us.
