Nicely put. This net spend argument has only come about within the last 5 years. I cannot remember it ever being mentioned when Ferguson was in charge or during Peps 1st couple of years in charge of City.
In modern day football, the only club who could use the net spend argument is Liverpool due to their sell to buy policy.

Liverpool is typically referenced as an example of a club bound by financial imperative and is predictably namechecked by Smith in his comments.
Although they are never perceived as much, when you examine its transfer activity compared to Manchester City the two clubs’ dealings are strikingly similar.
Far fetched as it comes.

If some are going to mention the Veron fee from 2001 and Rio fee in 2002. Ferguson had the right to go out and spend that. He single handedly put that club in a position to do that. Without him and the success he brought to that club the previous decade, United would not have generated the funds to do that.
United, Liverpool and Arsenal success will always be because of the legacy left from managers. City will be down to someone from the middle east. Without him, there would be no Pep at City.

Adlab-
According to the site below-
Manchester United had a 100k net spend the 1st 5 years of the PL era.
The same site states the following during the same period-
Newcastle 37m net
Blackburn 39m net
Arsenal 35m net
Everton 30m net
Liverpool 25m net
Manchester City 12m netIf you go by inflation – Roy Keane who cost 3.75m and Duncan Ferguson who cost 4m would cost 80m today according to many, which is roughly 20 times more.
100,000 x 20 = 2m in today’s market.
Sir Alex Ferguson delivered 4 league titles in those 1st 5 years, only time he didn’t deliver was when Jack Walker Blackburn won it in 95.
Different eras, but what Pep spent during his 1st 15 months in charge, no other club besides from Chelsea recently has come close to, I believe he spent 450m. He improved a side that already had the likes of Kompany, Fernandinho, Silva, De Bruyne, Aguero, Sterling and others.
Ferguson had to rebuild from the ground up. Pep had the structure and finances in place.

Arsenal have done well to last this long.
They are a few players short to get over the line. Similar to what Liverpool were years ago before the arrival of Van Dijk and Alison.

Back then it was effectively, Man United, Arsenal, Chelsea. But the other teams surrounding were not strong enough to be able to take points off the big guns.
Is that because the quality of teams have depleted over time in comparison to what they once were. Besides from City, I don’t think many players from this era will be remembered as elite.
Salah, Van Dijk, Kane being the only noticeable ones outside of City.
You look at the points total now and how many games Liverpool and City have lost when competing for the title in comparison to when United, Arsenal, Chelsea dominated too. Leeds United could beat anyone on there day back then, same with Spurs and Liverpool.
The game is going through a period where every top team across europe besides from 1 or 2 are at their worse.

Tactical fouling is a trait used by teams like Manchester City. Fernandinho did it for years and people scratched their head wondering why he never receive a booking until the 5th offence.

Just came across this thread, and it took me a few minutes to register what I read.
I am truly sorry for what you’re going through, Nine. Over the years, we have had quite a few battles when it comes to our clubs. Yet, I have always respected your passion and love for your club, as well as the opinions you shared on here and TeamTalk.
Keep fighting, my friend. I hope Saturdays result placed a smile on your face.

So Brighton play out of their skins against United. Yet, have been piss poor against Everton. What a funny old game.

What a crap end to the season. Top 4 should have been done and dusted weeks ago and here we are.
Rashford has gone back to being his usual self. Loses possession and then starts jogging without any attempt to reclaim the ball.
Where has this style of play crept in from. They pass the ball like they are having a kick about with their mates in the park. No urgency what so ever.

Please don’t remind me of the Glazer takeover. A club which went from being debt free to over £800m in debt in a matter of seconds, yet after £1.2b of interest payments, are still over £400m in debt.

I believe Jose style has suffered due to the lack of quality defenders and leaders, especially center backs in the game today. He loves to play counter attacking football, which worked well at Chelsea twice, when he had Terry, Carvalho, Cahill, Inter with Lucio and Samuel, Madrid Ramos, Pepe/Varane. When the opposition made a mistake, these players came out of the back and got a counter attacking move going. At United, he had Jones, Smalling, Rojo and Bailly, then Lindelof later, at Spurs, he has a ageing centre back pairing and a error prone Sanchez.
There seems to be a fair bit of emerging attacking talent coming through, yet there are a shortage of quality defenders coming through, especially center backs. United still have not filled the void left by Vidic and Rio, Chelsea have struggled to replace Cahill and Terry, Pep struggled to replace Kompany last summer. Biggest indication is Klopp, Liverpool needed a center back for years, the transfer committee probably had a long list of players, Klopp waited until the right player came along and got him, he knew the others on the list were not any better than the players he had already.
I have seen a few fans now say their side needs a center back, from City, United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, there is a reason so many are struggling to bring 1 in. Compare to who the league had 10-15 years ago to now, Rio, Vidic, Terry, Carvalho, Carragher, Hyppia, Agger, King, Campbell, Kompany.

After watching a few videos of the protest a few minutes ago. Although I understand the frustrations, the whole point has now been completely lost. Most people have been peaceful, unfortunately the minority have let them down.

Best World XI that have played while you have been alive. No 2 players can be from the same country or have played for the same club!!

George Floyd wasn’t murdered last year or the year before, Breonna Taylor wasn’t killed last year or the year before after being shot 8 times when plain clothes police officers incorrectly entered her house and then arrested her boyfriend for retaliating thinking they were intruders, to this day they still have not been charged, Ahmoud Albery wasnt killed last year or the year before, taking 3 months for the culprits to be charged, a woman ringing the police and falsely accusing a African American man of threatening her life didn’t happen last year or the year before. How much more do people need to take?
Oh, when Karens take a walk with their dogs off leash in the famous Bramble in NY’s Central Park, where it is clearly posted on signs that dogs MUST be leashed at all times, and someone like my brother (an avid birder) politely asks her to put her dog on the leash. pic.twitter.com/3YnzuATsDm

A few weeks ago there were anti lockdown protests all over Europe and America, people were having street parties on VE day, people have packed beaches when there has been good weather, the PM supported his right hand man when he was bent the rules and many more examples. People have literally stopped caring as time has progressed.

Brian-
I believe it down to when these things are happening too. 1 side is protesting when the lockdown rules have been eased, schools have reopened, more shops are opened and more people are returning to work.
Whilst the others and Cummings did it prior. Cummings bent the rules a week after the PM announced the whole country was going in to lockdown, which he help apply and then went to “check his eye sight” with his child in the back of the car on his wifes birthday and whilst the we were at our peak of the virus.
This just shows lack of leadership. Now there is talk of track and trace not being ready till September with the app being broken, 1 of the key things which allowed lockdown to be eased.

Years ago, a former work colleague of mine, knew a few who worked for Liverpool. When Clyne was going through his injury spell, people were crying out for Klopp to a buy a new RB. Klopp refused because he trusted someone in the ranks who could come through and take that spot long term. The rest is history. Klopp looks at the bigger picture. Werner is a quality signing for Chelsea if it goes through. Something tells me Klopps wants Havertz more because of how versatile he is.
