I’m torn on it Chucky. I can completely sympathise with both sides of the argument. I’d lean on favouring the application of common sense in not awarding the pen. Arsenal gained zero advantage from it.

There should almost be a separate award for breakthrough player of the year for under 20s or something

Mainoo has had an incredible rise for both club and country and appears to be what both have been in need of. Now is when the real test begins because the expectation will rise now and people expect him to perform miracles despite still only being 18yrs old. I don’t think yesterday was one of his better games, despite the goal. Has to be a contender for young player of the year, albeit it’s always hard to judge that award when players like Haaland and Saka are still eligible.

The thought of needing to beat Arsenal with nothing for us to gain but the prize of Liverpool winning the league leaves me feeling sick π

Oh I’d have definitely taken it if it was the other way Sean, no doubt about it. Had it been overturned and we went on to take all 3, it would have been massively undeserved anyway.

I’m not quite as convinced as Alfie/Sean are that it wasn’t a pen. I’d lean on it not being a pen but I’m not convinced that it’s a strong enough case to overturn it, which we know requires VAR to deem it a clear and obvious error. Taylor is known for never giving us anything though so I’m not for a second surprised we didn’t get the decision.

Iβm not sure what Ed and Alfie are seeing to be honest
You forgot to add Sean too here Threeps π

Villa are not the side they looked a few weeks back Threeps. They’re very beatable now. Arsenal and City the stronger sides imo but it’s so tight now that anything could happen.

No worries Threeps. We agree to disagree. I’m sure I’d be saying the same if it went that way for us.

I wouldn’t go as far as saying it was a dive but he’s definitely gone in looking for that contact as the initial contact with WBs foot never happens.

Yeah noticed it got removed Threeps. Here’s another one
Thatβs so unfair
Never a penalty
Baffling it wasnβt even checked by VAR

Yeah no worries Sean. From our point of view, it’s just another decision that’s gone against us. It doesn’t help that we’re also crap but that doesn’t excuse the fact that we’re just getting no good fortune at all at the moment. 3 soft penalties against us in the space of a few days is just crazy. So many bad calls against us in the big games this season too. Denied a stonewall pen for handball against Spurs, denied a penalty on Hojlund at Arsenal, City get a ridiculous penalty against us, Chelsea get 2 of the softest pens you’ll see and now this.
I know you’re extremely pessimistic by nature Sean but you’re massively still in this race and probably have one of the best run ins. I personally think the other two are level slightly above Liverpool this season but anything can happen between now and the end of the season. Arsenal are prone to bottling run ins and City seem capable of dropping silly points.

Its over now once out of our hands.
Ffs Sean, you’re level top with 8 games to go. Far from over π

What did you think of the pen Sean based on the vid I posted? I was certain it was a pen but that video had me doubting it. Looks very soft to me from that angle.

That’s also yet another “big 6” game where Liverpool have failed to win. Now just 1 in 9 wins this season I believe. I don’t think Arsenal or City would have gone away with anything less than 3 points after that first half by us.

I was sure this was a pen on first viewing but I’m not sure any more. Thoughts?

What’s surprised me with Liverpool this season is that they actually have quite a poor record against the traditional big sides. Is it a myth that you need to be able to beat the big sides to challenge? Liverpool have won 1 of 8 games against the big (traditional “big 6”) sides and that was against an awful Chelsea side.

It’s a damming stat but not one that surprised me. We’ve been regularly seeing average sides get 30 or so shots in against us for a while. It’s just completely unsustainable and Ten Hag’s failure to fix that will likely lead to his downfall. Sunday could either be chaos again which could go either way or if Liverpool are more disciplined and don’t let the match become chaotic, they should have too much for us. I’d imagine Ineos are already scouring Europe for a successor to Ten Hag.

Why don’t we every get pens like that Alfie and we get two against us in the same game?!
