Wow. This is massive. First Mendy and now Greenwood. Maybe even an North-London based player who can’t be named.

2nd February 2023 at 2:13 pm in reply to: January Transfers 2023 (All I Want For Christmas is….) #203562I k ow itβs not affecting fffp but I thought we would never see spending like this. Yes itβs spread over years but arenβt most transfer?
Sean, people often get this mixed up. Yes, transfer payments are very often spread over several years. Sometimes they are paid up front. It doesn’t matter one bit which of those you do with a transfer in regards of FFP. What is ALWAYS the case (however the terms of the payment are spread) is that from an accounting perspective, the entire fee is spread evenly over the length of the player’s contract. All Chelsea have done is said “Let’s give him an 8 Yr contract instead of 5/6 so it has less effect on our FFP outgoings”. So they may still actually pay, for example, the Mudryk fee over 3 years or instantly, even. It doesn’t matter. From an FFP standpoint, it’s the length of contract that matters. Hence why I don’t buy the loophole terminology. Every club has always known they can give 10yr contracts if they want. If that is seen as a loophole within boardrooms around the country, I would have huge concerns around the abilities of those concerned who are now moaning about this.

2nd February 2023 at 11:01 am in reply to: January Transfers 2023 (All I Want For Christmas is….) #203537Interesting point Lucky re the reasonable level of the wages. It almost sounds too good to be true from Chelsea’s perspective. I have to wonder why someone like Mudryk would agree to “only” 100k a week considering how little that is likely to be worth (in football terms) in 3 years, never mind 7/8 years. I mean on the one hand, he’s secured his future with this deal but he’s also potentially cut himself short at the peak of his career by ensuring Chelsea could theoretically keep him on that wage past his 30th birthday.

31st January 2023 at 12:27 pm in reply to: January Transfers 2023 (All I Want For Christmas is….) #203515Yeah completely agree with that too Threeps about the contract lengths. I wouldn’t even say it’s bending the rules as Chucky suggested. Nobody has ever stopped any club giving out long contracts. Let Chelsea give out 10yr contracts and gamble more on the success of their transfers if they want I say. Barca are doing much worse with their economic levers etc.

30th January 2023 at 9:31 pm in reply to: January Transfers 2023 (All I Want For Christmas is….) #203489I saw something Simon Jordan said about those long contracts and I completely agree with him actually. He as saying clubs should be able to give players whatever length contracts they want even if it’s mainly a tactic to get around FFP. It’s mot exactly risk free for the buying club. It’s lumbering the club with big, big wages over a long time so you’re banking on them being a success. That risk should come with some benefit (FFP circumvention in this case). He put it better than I could, but I do think the 5yr limit is a bit unnecessary.

30th January 2023 at 8:37 pm in reply to: January Transfers 2023 (All I Want For Christmas is….) #203483I don’t think I’ve mentioned injuries once this season Nine despite horrible luck with them all season. Didn’t once mention Casemiro after the result either. All I said before was that I fancied us until he got suspended. Teams at our level shouldn’t be using injuries as an excuse and it wasn’t an excuse from me. I was merely stating that going away to the top of the league without him made it tougher than I was expecting but we all get injuries. Just have to deal with it.

30th January 2023 at 6:57 pm in reply to: January Transfers 2023 (All I Want For Christmas is….) #203472Why are Benfica taking the piss having his release clause so high? If he was happy to sign for them with that release clause, he or anyone else can’t then moan about it. He should be thankful there’s a release clause at all. Look at when Kane tried to leave Spurs and couldn’t. They can set his release clause whatever they like as he’s their player. He doesn’t want it, don’t sign the contract with Benfica, simple.
Absolutely crazy money being spent by Chelsea. Don’t want to hear any moaning on here from the Chelsea fans about injuries now π

30th January 2023 at 1:56 pm in reply to: January Transfers 2023 (All I Want For Christmas is….) #203450With that said, while Sterling and Sane (who Mikus pointed out) are good examples, the same strategy could arguably be the catalyst for them not winning the league again this season as it also saw Jesus and Zinchenko leave and become pivotal in Arsenal’s challenge.

30th January 2023 at 1:52 pm in reply to: January Transfers 2023 (All I Want For Christmas is….) #203449Yes very true Mikus. Utd are absolutely awful at selling players and hang on to them far too long only for them to leave on frees (Matic, Pogba, Hererra, Lingard, Mata etc) or they become completely worthless when it comes to selling them as we’ve waited too long so go for nominal fees (Bailly, Smalling, Pereira etc). Dan James the only exception really. Massively hampers what you can do re FFP.
City have been very good at selling players at the right time. Cancelo, at 28, will never be worth more than he is now albeit it’s only a buy option so they may well get him back.

Joao Cancelo set to join Bayern Munich on loan:
π΅ Option to buy for β¬70m in summer
π΅ With Lewis emergence & 5 CBs, 3 of whom can play at FB, City feel they have cover
π΅ Cancelo wants minutes & was facing even less playing time with shape change #MCFChttps://t.co/lfSiwUSVfx— James Ducker (@TelegraphDucker) January 30, 2023

I’ll be honest. I still think Liverpool will somehow get top 4. I think either us or Newcastle will let a side in and I fancy Liverpool to have a resurgence and just sneak in. Get top 4, get Bellingham in and another midfielder and they’re back challenging again IMO.

Imagine telling someone 2 years ago that Arsenal would look lightyears ahead of Liverpool now. You’d have been laughed out of the room. Those two clubs, for different reasons, perfectly showcase how quickly a club’s fortunes can change.

Haven’t seen much of Liverpool to be honest, recently. How has Gakpo been playing? Is he doing alright but just not scoring or is he just mot doing much?

Didn’t watch the game yesterday so I can’t Adlab. Don’t understand the offside rule at all any longer. No idea how our one in the first half was ruled out. Really odd one.

Yeah true re best bet to get them up again Lucky. I suspect they’d gladly take the compensation hit if he does keep them up and a trendier manager came up for grabs in the summer anyway.

Yeah Dyche surely the best bet. It’s one of those though where Everton probably don’t fancy him long term but they know he’s probably their best chance of staying up so there’ll likely be a conflict over the length of contract.

He just seems like such a weird manager Lucky to come in halfway through the season. The players are used to a real mish mash of playing styles under Lampard and will be expected to adopt a well drilled, organised high pressing game. Feels a little bit like when we replaced Ole with Rangnick. It might work for them for the simple reason that the players will be well up for a change.
