It’s a difficult one Mak. On one hand, if you are ever going to replace him with a player of similar quality, it may be better to do it now while you have the attraction of Champions League to offer. With so many top teams now, you may not make top 4 this season and it could make replacing him even harder.

On the other hand, as crazy as it sounds to say it, £90mil at this stage of the window is not going to go far with everyone knowing you’ve loads of money and very little time to spend it. All in all, I think Liverpool are doing the right thing, but it seems inevitable that the move will happen, whether now or within the next 12 months.

I remember seeing Gomez play left back for Liverpool a couple of years ago (I think it was against Arsenal) and he looked brilliant in the one game I saw. I didn’t realise he’d been injured. I remember at the time thinking this was England’s next left back. Always a shame to see players suffer with injuries early on

Yeah agree with that. I just expected one or two might have gone for Torres. I guess Suarez left under better circumstances with the Liverpool faithful as well which probably helps his case!

I remember that 9-1 win Pax. Defoe was on fire. Spurs have definitely had some quality flair players through the years. Ginola, Gazza, Berbatov, Modric. Who was the most exciting to watch do you think?

Hightown, your post seems to have done the job. Sean did say he’d be joining up. He’s one of the few posters from there who I have known for a while and had many a debate with. Taxi is on his way also. He’s just having problems logging in but we’ll get that sorted.

It’s going to be a crucial last few weeks of the window for Liverpool. My suspicion is that Coutinho deal is done and that Liverpool have asked to delay the announcement until they’ve secured their replacement(s) so as to not be overcharged. Is the Keita deal all but dead now?

Liverpool could soon have an awful lot of money to spend (if Coutinho does go) but they’ll be taken to the cleaners by any buying club as they’ll know Liverpool have loads of money and very little time to replace him. They could do with getting the likes of VVD over the line before they come into more money

The Rio fee has been topped a few times now.

– Luiz to PSG (£50mil)
– Stones to City (£50mil)
– Walker to City (£50mil)

You make a fair point that it would indeed be a world record fee for someone who few would say justifies being the world’s most expensive defender BUT looking at the trends from the above players (who I’d argue are around the same level if not a lower level than VVD) then the “going rate” argument makes more sense don’t you think?

That’s a big shout. If that is even in doubt, surely the rumored VVD fee is better spent on another area of the field, as you say. I must admit I think the VVD fee is way over the top but it’s the going rate for a decent centre back these days. I do think you’ll get VVD either way. The Chelsea link seems to have quietened down
