Chucky, I’m amazed Utd have gone in with no goals conceded there. Utd deserved the lead but it’s been all Arsenal since. It’s hard to see how this can stay 2-0

What a game so far! Utd will do well to hold on to this lead.

Hats off to City there. Really looked like the gap would close a little at the top tonight but that’s a huge win. Two very late wins in their last two games for City.
On one hand, a great show of character. On another, it definitely looks like they’re not rolling over teams like they were earlier on in the season. As long as they keep picking up the wins, though, they won’t care.

Chucky, yeah don’t get me wrong, they’re both doing a great job punching above their weight. My point is that I think they excel at being underdogs and that they seem to struggle once they’re expected to deliver. People often say things like “Look what Ranieri did with Leicester. Imagine if he had City’s budget.” My point is that I don’t agree with that. I think some managers are great “underdog” managers but it’s an entirely different man-management technique to deliver once expectations have been built up. As an example, I think someone like Klopp would struggle at Real where every single game they would be expected to win. Give him an Atletico Madrid level of side, though, and I feel he’d do wonders with them as the expectation to deliver is not as high.

Jim, Young has been solid all season to be fair. He’s been without a doubt one of Utd’s best players. He won’t be a defining inclusion to the squad but I’d take him. We’re not blessed for left sided players and he can play anywhere from left back to left wing (& even on the right) and do a job.
As for Spurs, I’m starting to wonder if Poch is one of those managers who are great when there is no pressure or expectations on their team but struggles when it comes to being expected to get a result or being in a position where they’re expected to fight for the league. Klopp is a little bit like that for me too. They’re the kind of managers who are masters at getting to finals against the odds but lack the final bit of man management skills to get the prize once expectations have been built up.

Ashley Young scored two very nice goals already. He has to go to the World Cup next year, as much for his versatility as anything else. Tonight should have been a tough game for Utd but Watford have been pegged back all game with Utd looking like scoring from every attack. Should have been 4 but for a stunning double save from Gomes just before the break

Well I was almost right on the late game until that late goal, Sean! Good result that for the rest of the pack in and around the CL spots. Top 4 impossible to call this season

Feels a bit too early to put a thread up for the midweek games so I’ll stick the midweek predictions on here for now and re-post them on a new thread once the weekend fixtures are finished

Yeah I agree with all that Sean. Chelsea should really be winning this. Their strength is Liverpool’s achilles heel but Liverpool just seem to have a knack of pulling out a performance against the big sides when least expected to. They may not win, granted. But I can’t see them losing at home

Looks like I’m the only one to go for a Liverpool win in the later game today. I really can’t see Liverpool losing this one at home but I’ve been wrong before!

Talk now of Mkhitaryan going back to Dortmund after Jose publicly criticised his recent form. Mkhi looked poor when he first started getting games at Utd then seemed to really find his feet and was involved in everything it seemed. This season he just hasn’t got going at all though.
What is it with players at Dortmund though, looking like world beaters in the yellow of BVB and failing to perform once they leave and ending up returning. Sahin, Goetze, Kagawa, now Mhki?

I wonder where else he could go. Without wanting to talk down Spurs at all, I can’t imagine any of the (other!) top sides wanting to take the risk on him at his age and with the injury problems he has had recently. He’d want huge wages but would anyone be prepared to pay those any more?
It wouldn’t surprise me to see him go to Bayern actually to take over from Robben. The league won’t be as physically demanding there. Again though, the wages would be a stumbling block as Bayern aren’t known as being huge spenders.

Finally figured out how to just show the results for a given week so here’s the results from last week which confirm Goatistuta as the best predictor for the last set of fixtures:

Jim, I’m not sure of the permutations regarding top spot as I think 3 sides could all end up on 12 points but Utd not getting top spot would mean having to lose at home to Moscow. Frankly, if we lose that, we don’t deserve top spot. We should have more than enough depth in the squad to not need to play a full strength side. José may start with a strong side and hope to go a goal up early so he can bring them off

In theory it does Jim, but we’re through barring a 7-0 home defeat against Moscow so I’m not sure it will make much of a difference. We have pretty good squad depth so it shouldn’t be an issue.

Poor from Utd after a good first half. What is is about that Basel stadium that sees PL clubs often struggling to get anything there? The result won’t really matter to Utd but a defeat is never good for the morale regardless.
