Yeah gutting that. Really looked like Gabriel had played him on.

I’m also still convinced that De Zerbi will eventually be the manager of this Chelsea side. I hope not but I think that’s just a matter of time.

You look around that Chelsea side and wonder where that billion pounds has gone. It’s not a side that screams quality. So much money spent and you’re playing a CB who turns 39 soon and Jackson up top. There really are so many gaps still.

Gabby Agbonlahor needs adding to that list Sean. No idea how that guy gets employed. Absolutely no idea.

Roy Keane, Steven Gerrard and Vincent Kompany. All incredible captains and winners. Arguably 3 of the greatest the league has seen. All had great first spells in management (Sunderland, Rangers and Burnley). Kompany showing that he’s very much following the same trend the other 2 did though. It’s almost as though the sheer fact of who they are is enough to get their teams on board and instill a sense of wanting to run through brick walls for the manager. That desire does seem to have a limit though, as we’re now seeing again.

That’s it Adlab. I don’t think it’s about getting the cash into the club Threeps but what that cash can do for the team when reinvested. In just 12 months Salah goes into his final year and there’s every chance he won’t sign a new contract. Salah for 2 years or potentially rebuilding the side for the next 10 years? Easy choice for me. I’d sell him. The very fact they’re going for him tells me he’s suggested to them he’s keen which means he’s had his head turned. What Salah are you going to get for the next 12/24 months with that in mind? Selling him and showing the rest of the team that nobody is indispensable would be a big call but one I think they would benefit from in the long term. Spurs wshowing again today what you can do when reinvesting after selling your star player at the right time.

Your first paragraph is exactly my point though Nil. Liverpool are desperate for Salah to not go. Is that sustainable? Is that healthy? On Mikus’ point, I can’t help but feel Liverpool should be in a position where they can allow Salah to leave, bank the cash the reinvest when the time suits.

Mikus’ point about not being so dependent on individual players and ensuring it’s the club that matters and not the players had me thinking about Salah. Liverpool seem desperate to hold onto him. Should that be the case? 100% City would have sold him to the Saudis and reinvested. I can’t help thinking Liverpool might regret not selling him if the fee gets to the kind of silly figures being thrown around. Look at West Ham post-Rice, Spurs post-Kane. I realise the critical factor here is timing. There’s no time for a replacement, sure. But I’d genuinely let him go for crazy money if that was me, then reinvest either in Jan or next summer. What difference would it really make this season, anyway? Will Liverpool get relegated if they sell him? Obviously not. Are they likely to win the league with him? No chance. Hence why I don’t see the sense in turning down crazy money.

It’s also a case that, irrespective of how they’ve got to the top, now that they’re there, they no longer need to act immorally (payments to parents, routing payments through other subsidiaries, inflating sponsorship deals etc). They can now sit back and enjoy the fruits of their labour because they’re perceived to be the best place for young players to develop and thus the cycle goes on. The best young players then go there, increasing their revenue stream, allowing them to continue to spend reasonable amounts of money filling the gaps the academy can’t with players financed by academy sales. The rest of us are basically screwed 😁.

Spot on Alfie. It’s easy to point at the net spend and say “wow, they’re just brilliant aren’t they?” but it’s far more complex than that. Take, for example, all their academy sales which prop up their recruitment and allows them to point to an impressive net spend. They’re known for making illegal payments to parents which has basically allowed them to scoop up the top talent at youth level from around the world. That has allowed them to create an unrivalled revenue stream. Their academy is basically a sales channel. Sell-on and buyback clauses allow them to avoid any mistakes. It’s impressive but it’s very much all the result of unlimited wealth masquerading as “just being good at transfers” albeit they have been getting most things right, too, in transfers which helps.

A billion, Harry? 😂 for what will be a 32yr old Salah next summer?

Adlab, yeah a bit all over the place. Not sure about Hojlund yet. Mount I was never sure about but I hold some hope there simply because all the big clubs in the league wanted him so maybe it’s something I’m missing. Otherwise, seems a bit of a scattergun approach again. Filling gaps really now because of holes in the squad rather than really improving the team.

It will really test Klopp and FSG’s relationship if that bid starts going up much further. FSG will, somewhat understandably, see certain offers being too good to turn down for a 31yr old who will never fetch anywhere near this kind of money again.

Phillips won England’s player of the year a couple of years back and Maguire, another questionable choice, has been a good player for England in tournaments and in team-of-the-tournaments while playing for England. I think, in Phillips’ case especially, he probably feels there’s no in-form alternative who gives his side the same balance. I’m not defending the choices of any of those. They’re all very questionable (Maguire, Henderson, Sterling, Phillips). I just think there are likely to be good reasons for him making those choices which will often go beyond just who is on form or not.
