Chucky, how about Kyle Walker or Ledley King for the Spurs ones? I guess Ledley was just so unlucky with injuries. I reckon he’d have been in with the top CB shout if he’d not had those injury problems. Same with Woodgate. Walker probably played his best football for City, I suppose.

Yes I remember Utd chasing him for a year or so before he signed for City. Superb player and superb career. Average manager, like so many of the players mentioned in this thread, interestingly. In fact, I don’t think a single one of the names mentioned has done anything of note in management despite a lot of them trying.

Good point Tugay. I hesitated before pressing submit regarding Kompany but you’re completely right. I think in both cases though they joined as young players so were unlikely to have been able to have the same transformation effect that Van Dijk had coming in at peak age to Liverpool. Both Kompany and Terry had to first establish their place in the side.

Yeah Sean, I thought about adding Giggs but it’s just impossible to ignore what a scumbag he is off the field. On it, he’s second to none for achievements alone in the league. I do sometimes think thr fact he played on for as long as he did skewed how he’s viewed. In his early and mid twenties, he was unbelievable on that left wing.

No, the thing I do agree with re Van Dijk is that he’s probably the CB who has made the biggest transformation to the team he’s joined in the league. Rio, Terry and Kompany all came into already top sides.

That’s it Mak. We all have different lists. I’d hazard a guess that you’ll probably never hear the same 5 names if you asked everyone you know that question. Even polls are tricky as they’re often weighted in favour of those teams with the most fans.

I personally don’t think VVD was anywhere near the level of Rio, Terry or Kompany Mak in all honesty. I think he’s fortunate to have played in an era where he’s not up against the likes of Henry, Shearer, Ruud, Van Persie, Bergkamp, Rooney, Torres etc every week like those were. Haaland aside, the strikers these days just aren’t as good imo. That’s why these kind of lists are always a nightmare because we all have biases,me included.
