This one is a bigger story than VAR made a mistake. We all accept handball, fouls which leads to red cards, and some elements of offside (was the player interfering with play) are subjective. We can have an ex-ref, or head of refs, appear on TV and obfuscate until the cows come home as to why the decision was correct. We can then see the same ex-ref or head of refs appear on tv some time later and contradict what they said a few weeks ago in their latest attempts to obfuscate poor decisions.
Fans lap that up as it backs up their tribal agendas.
However, this is not that, this is a glaring, obvious error from VAR which no amount of obfuscation will cover up. This is a huge mistake which no one, not even the most tribal of tribal fan can justify. Yes, it deserves national coverage. However, the PGMOL were quick to put their hands up and explain what went wrong. They need to learn and move on from it. They should be humbled and want to improve. There should be no more obfuscation when things go wrong, no more contradictions about decisions. They need to accept VAR is not working and put measures in place to fix that. This will benefit everyone, it’s not a tribal matter.
They need to start to re-ref matches using VAR. Is there a reason why this goal cannot stand, and they need to be consistent with their application of the laws. They cannot disallow a goal for offside one week and the very next week allow a similar goal to stand against the team who had one chalked off the week before.
They need to do this quicker, and more consistently than they do now. Give the benefit of the doubt to the attacking team and improve what has become a shambles.
But yes, this incident did warrant becoming national news.

Sorry, misunderstood the slide! They thought it was given as a goal, so checked for any reason why it couldn’t stand, didn’t see one and said check complete.
I’m surprised it was given as offside on the pitch as he was at least a foot onside and they are usually good at that.

That makes no sense to me. If they thought the onfield decision was a goal, they would surely be checking the same thing – offside. Why would they draw lines for offside but not check for it? Surely if they thought the onside decision was wrong then they would be the ones to overrule that, that is quite literally their job. They would be better off saying they thought the onside decision was no goal, then they could say ‘we thought they hadn’t given it, which we agreed with’.
But I am sure wrongly flagged as offside on the day anyway.
As for the lines, we have always been told that the pictures on screen are not the ones Stockley park use. They have other angles etc and the lines are drawn by computer. Or at lease that is what they said with the Garnacho offside. That means that the pictures are from sky, who draw their own lines – but sky don’t seem to know this.
AS the lines would have been drawn in Stockley park by the computer it should just say onside or offside and relay that to the ref.
As always, it’s clear as mud what the actual process is.

I don’t necessarily have a bee in my bonnet that the ref gave Casemiro a red, but I do have a bee in my bonnet that you, and others on here, are so tribal that you stated Casemiro’s was a clear red and then when a similar incident occurs with one of your own players state that it is clearly not a red card.
You have to be better and see past club colours.

VAR has been terrible this season. Must be 5 games it has cost us so far. They really do need to consider scrapping it, as it’s just it’s just not fit for purpose now.
Rugby is having the same issues now, they rely on TMO and it takes away from the ref on the pitch as they have a natural take on the game itself, what they have given before or what they have let people get away with. TMO just sees black and white and often sees something which wasn’t there or miss something that was.
VAR is doing the same and is just so inconsistent.

That was far less of a pen than the penalty we weren’t awarded against the same player a few weeks ago!
Arms out, makes himself as wide as possible. Very close distance though.
The one we should have had was arms out and a lot further away. VAR needs to get their act together.

Evans walked through that. He looked shaky recently and Burnley should have played on that but they didn’t.
Strange Burnley performance in that usually they’d be more physical and would cause problems to play against. Kompany has changed that and made them play decent football, but they will struggle in the PL as they don’t have the players in this league to hurt teams that way.
