Really interesting discussion. It would make a great debate. Lots of sensible points made by all. If we strip out our club bias I reckon we agree on the main principles.
I do think there is an element of sportswashing
Owning a successful EPL team helps to smooth opening commercial doors. Surprise SurpriseBut ignoring all of that money alone doesn’t buy success . You need ALL three of Eds key ingredients . At the moment, luckily we have them.

At the end of 2020, shares in quoted UK-domiciled companies listed on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) were worth a total of Β£2.17 trillion. The proportion of UK shares held in the rest of the world increased again to set a record high, at 56.3% of the value of the UK stock market.
The proportion of UK shares held by UK-resident individuals fell to 12%, down by 1.3 percentage points from 2018.
Football is no different.
AlsoSome of the UKβs largest listed companies including water and energy giants have handed almost Β£500m to Qatari state-owned investors this year, raising concerns that blue-chip company profits are supporting the controversial World Cup host.
The dividend payouts are the result of the Gulf nationβs investments in a raft of FTSE 100 firms, including Barclays, Shell and utility firm Severn Trent, which have reported strong profits amid a cost of living crisis and the worst UK drought in centuries.
The figures, compiled by the Guardian, cover funds distributed to Qatari state-owned shareholders in the 10 months leading up to the controversial tournament in November.
Football is no different. United- Glazers-Dividends.
Just pointing out where UK investment comes from._____________________________

30th December 2022 at 2:54 pm in reply to: January Transfers 2023 (All I Want For Christmas is….) #202003What everybody should realise that until City ownership came along some eleven years ago no other teams were allowed to break in to the top two or three who ran the league like a cartel.
In ANY business to break a cartel requires enormous investment. Look at Chelsea before Abramovich. Fairly unsuccessful with a crap ground.
It would be better if there was no foreign money. Even better if no oil money or Russian money. Better if no money from non resident billionaires who don’t pay UK tax. Better if Thai or Chinese investment is excluded. But then this applies to many many UK industries.
Who owns our electricity, water and rail companies. Who for example owns Harrods. The foreign investment gives UK businesses an advantage-most of the time. Sadly football is no exception.
Are Newcastle fans crying about their new ownership? I doubt it.
I do detect a bit of the green eyed monster!_____________________________

29th December 2022 at 5:47 pm in reply to: January Transfers 2023 (All I Want For Christmas is….) #201956Some interesting comments above. Can’t say I agree with everything but good conversation.
City are lucky to have such an owner but you still have to make the team play.
Above all we have the best management.
When Liverpool were great they had Shankly and Paisley. United had SAF. Chelsea for a while. Mouriho. All spent money. But after SAF United spent loads with little return. Chelsea perhaps less so.
Entirely agree with Eds assessment of the three requirements for success and how important it is
to make all three work. Just two isn’t enough for continuing success._____________________________

Haaland should have had a third there and Leeds nearly get a second ..
It’s all go now We are hanging on a bit here. Dangerous freekick here to Leeds yet another set piece . Whew missed.
Can’t understand the commentary not very objective . Corner to us predictable. Nothing!
Leeds just had a throw in. The most blatant foul throw yet not given. Maybe the rules have changed??_____________________________

What a chance for Grealish…missed. Should be at least one up but we’re not. Can’t afford a draw or loss here with some tough fixtures to come.
Another chance for Gundogan…saved again. Broken record coming but Grealish is just not good enough. Has had a lot of the ball and wasted mostly. Another shocker from G.
Get Foden on please._____________________________

28th December 2022 at 8:31 pm in reply to: Weekend Part Two: Week 1: Or maybe 17: Don’t really know anymore… #201907Have to say this is tedious. 26mins gone. One shot on target from us none from Leeds. I understand the Leeds tactics, its like most teams. Defend and try and steal one. First corner after 30 mins.

We are making heavy weather of this v Leeds. So often we play like this, dominate and have v few attempts. It’s about time Grealish did something to justify that Β£100m. A goal might be something.

27th December 2022 at 9:44 pm in reply to: Weekend Part Two: Week 1: Or maybe 17: Don’t really know anymore… #201891I hate these handball possible penalties. We need to go back to the concept of DELIBERATE and leave it to the ref. Just the ball hitting an arm drives me nuts. Even though I’m sure we would lose out, I’m fed up of appeal after appeal for nothing.

Nunez can be a really effective player but needs some coaching. If he slows down a bit and thinks more he could be more deliberate with his finishing. I reckon he could be really good.
Missed the game live last night as we were out so watched it today. Should have been 7-6!!!.
Dias out for a few weeks which is a blow for us but at least we have decent cover.
Game was better without VAR?_____________________________
