I’d also suggest it’s probably a risk not worth taking when it’s a position we’re overflowing with quality in. In Walker, TAA, Trippier, I’d say James is a slight improvement on those but not to such a degree that it’s worth taking an extra one in case he’s fit. Different story if it’s Kane, Rice or someone critical to the side and where we lack suitable alternatives. RB is the last position we should be worrying about injuries in, as good as James is.

9th November 2022 at 7:28 am #200725Be interesting to see who Southgate picks. Few players be in who are not playing regularly
If Southgate brings Ben white as itβs maddnes. Walker, trippier etc all start before taa. Heβs not playing well and I wouldnβt bring him as England have plenty of right fulls and heβs to attacking for Southgate
On form Grealish, taa, maguire, Gallagher should not be going but Southgate has his favourites. Thought Grealish would have got going by now .

9th November 2022 at 8:24 am #200726Re picking his favourites, is that any different from club management though Sean? VVD has been awful at times this season but Klopp picks him anyway, as has TAA. Like Klopp, Southgate picks players who fit his side despite maybe not being on the best of form. All sorts of factors to consider rather than just form. Tactical fit, whether someone is good for the dressing room etc. I think people obsess over this form thing way too much. If we really wanted the side picked on form, we’d let a computer pick it.

9th November 2022 at 9:00 am #200727I would take TAA for his offensive qualities think he could be useful from the bench.

9th November 2022 at 10:42 am #200734I always liked the old way of playing system where full-backs would always have the license to push forward, but a contribution of that would come from a right-sided midfielder which in the modern day I don’t see as a clear and obvious.
In an England set up in the most recent times, I saw this in Gary Neville and David Beckham.
I know Trent has contributed a lot of goals, but I must be in the minority of minority in my perception of him as right-back. I’ve never seen him as that. Very rare in matches have I seen him stick to his position or make a tackle supporting a fellow team mate.
What would happen if he is taken? Would that shatter his confidence?
He is a right-sided midfielder in my eyes. Southgate doesn’t implement that style as he is more cautious. What other alternatives are there taking into consideration injuries?

9th November 2022 at 10:56 am #200736“Reece James is set to miss out on a place in Englandβs World Cup squad after Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate reportedly called him to tell him his dream of playing at the Qatar tournament was over. The right-back has been out of action since being forced off the pitch with a knee injury during the Bluesβ Champions League victory over AC Milan in Italy a month ago.”
Gutted for Reece personally but pleased from a Chelsea perspective rushing himself back for the WC would have been a risk and Chelsea need a fully fit Reece for the second half of the season.

9th November 2022 at 10:59 am #200737You’re right Adlab not the right thread as it’s got nothing to do with the WC.
It must be right though if it’s on the Mail online.π

9th November 2022 at 12:14 pm #200744Still struggling with your ability to read I see Chucky I’ve said for a couple of months on here now that I expect Conte to be at Spurs next season.
That’s if the Spurs fans don’t scare him away with their booing!π

9th November 2022 at 12:29 pm #200745Adlab, a different view on Bellingham from today.
“Liverpool have seen their hopes of securing the signing of Jude Bellingham dramatically fade after an intermediary of the player claimed his head has been turned by a European powerhouse.”
If Bellingham has a good WC there will be a queue of Club’s including I suspect Real Madrid who may well be the European powerhouse.

9th November 2022 at 4:25 pm #200746I get you Ed but Liverpool donβt have nothing ch choice? Who comes in for vvd? Gomez? Konate has been injured? Again who comes in for taa? Gomez? Ramsey had been injured
Pundits are slats giving out that players in form are not picked but I get what you are saying⦠especially in international football

9th November 2022 at 5:49 pm #200747Yeah you know better than me Sean regarding whether there’s been any other options to take TAA or VVD out. I suspect though that he wouldn’t have taken VVD out anyway had Gomez, Konate, Matip or any combination of them been fit. Definitely not suggesting he should have done either.

9th November 2022 at 7:06 pm #200749I came across the report yesterday about the obvious of Quatar and Sepp’s choice.
I just think from a personal point of view in light of Covid 19 and the impact caused, I can’t help but think of the knock-on effects on players recovery and time off. There are players injured and are internationals also unable to partake in the tournament.
No doubt in my mind too the dial-up on the training demands/physical fitness.
We expect these people to be machines hop-skipping from playing domestic league to the World Cup. There has to be an element of realism and for me, that has to be a bare minimum of a 4 Week Winter Break.

10th November 2022 at 2:50 pm #200773Don’t see to much wrong with that squad to be honest… a decent combination of “experienced” players along with players are seemingly in form who might not be regulars…
No excuses to not make the 1/4’s I reckon… after that, it’s all about what happens on the day!

10th November 2022 at 5:12 pm #200775Yes decent side that. The only thing that would surprise me is if we won it all. Genuinely think we could just as easily go out in the group as we could make the semis.
