22nd November 2019 at 1:43 pm #53635Steveo, ok mate. I wasn’t sure why you were taking issue with an opinion, but it seemed you wanting to get a few things off you’re chest.
Maybe a real-life get together via a Tea/Coffee or a Beer would clear up any misunderstands.
Anyway, Payday for me so in a Great Mood π

22nd November 2019 at 3:26 pm #53643Being born in Rotherhithe and having a Dad and Uncle who lived and died Millwall I began watching football at The Old Den . They weren’t too good in those days but it was a good day out starting and finishing in a variety of pubs in and around The Old Kent Road.
One Saturday my Dad was ill and a mate of his took me and his son to White Hart Lane to watch Spurs play Leicester, what a feckin an eye opener, huge crowd, great players free flowing football with goals .
I was hooked and kept going back with my Dads mate for two years after which I went by myself meeting up with other young lads I had met at home games and the rest is history.
I’ll always have a thing for Millwall and used to attend a few home and a games every season but got spoilt that one day many years ago in N17._____________________________

22nd November 2019 at 5:00 pm #53646Ok so here’s mine
I grew up in Bradford, Yorkshire.
I didn’t really get interested in football straight away. My interest in football came from playing old manager games. Can’t remember what they were called back then. Something like Premier Manager or something. My Dad took me to a few Leeds games and tried to get me to support Leeds. Even though I grew up in Bradford, I wasn’t born there so didn’t really feel any great affinity to Bradford. I moved around a fair bit with the family.
So it came to the point of deciding on a team. A lot at school were Leeds fans but mostly it was the kids I didn’t like so I was put off supporting Leeds. From playing manager games and watching football, I just fell in love with the early 90s Utd side and supported them ever since. Been to games but not as much as I’d have liked due to moving around a fair bit.
So, yes, live in Sweden now but the football is awful over here so stick to watching PL on the box.

22nd November 2019 at 6:38 pm #53647I grew up in the valleys in s.wales. Cardiff were my closest team, but my uncle was a cardiff city hooligan and a drunk, and as a kid I was terrified of the thought of going to see a cardiff game or being around people like that, too young and ignorant at the time to understand that all clubs had the same type of idiot and it was a football problem, not simply a Cardiff city one.
Never the less I really enjoyed watching football on the tv and playing it. By the time I was 9 all my friends in school had a team they supported, it was mainly man utd, then pool, and then surprisingly enough Newcastle (no one gave a crap about Cardiff city). I didnt really have an affection for any particular club but I remember wanting to support a different team to all my friends, that’s when I met my Chelsea supporting older cousin, and he told me everything he knew about chelsea. I think the main reason I was attracted to the club was how much I related to them at the time, Chelsea were an average side with dreams of becoming great, and I was very insecure kid with low self esteem who dreamed of being confident and successful, I have always liked supporting the underdog too.
I dont think I knew I loved Chelsea until FA cup final against utd in 94. It was the first game I anticipated with such excitement and nervousness, my friends who were utd fans always took the piss out of chelsea, and me for supporting them, and I was so looking forward to Chelsea beating utd and giving them all the stick they had coming…. We lost 4-0 and I cried my eyes out, didnt hear the end of it at school either. But once you are smitten with a club there is no going back and my love just grew with every season. I have so many great memories of the progress we made after that final, and I remember talking to my cousin on the phone for hours after we signed Gullit, we were so excited and the progress we made in the years following prior to Romans purchase gave me so much joy through my teenage years, this year I am 25 years a blue, and wouldnt swap it for anything, Chelsea have been a massive part of my life and such comfort in difficult times, I will love them forever.
Funny thing is I work in Cardiff now and one of my colleagues has been a Cardiff season ticket holder since he was born (father made him a member day he was born) He really hates me for supporting Chelsea when I was born 15 miles from Cardiff, and like many others, he believes the only way to enjoy football and support a club is to go to games every week. The irony about his position however, is when I asked him hypothetically who he would support if Cardiff went bust and werent reformed, he said he would support Newport because its the thrill of seeing the game live that is most important to him. Whats ironic about this is that I as an armchair fan could never support another team than chelsea given the same hypothetical situation, it would be impossible for me to care about another team. I think a lot of match going fans, especially of years gone by have confused their love of tribalism for love of their club, for me it was never about becoming part of a tribe, I simply loved the Chels.

22nd November 2019 at 6:56 pm #53648Simple!
Dad took me to the cup final in 1956. Never looked back! Good times/bad times. Apart from the 60s team with Summerbee, Bell Lee etc this last10 years has been incredible. I wont see it again. Just like to see the CL before I depart. Never know. Bit of luck, a couple of crucial decisions……._____________________________

22nd November 2019 at 8:40 pm #53651My family were Utd fans, my first game was during the war years 1944 to be precise, my sister and her newly wed husband, both avid Utd fans took me to maine rd to watch City v Everton, they were annoyed because he could only get a week end pass that week end and he was hoping it was a Utd game. He was in a Lancaster Bomber crew. The first thing that amazed me was the crowd, although I do remember we had a seat in the main stand, not sure how they got tickets at short notice but on reflection we may have queued up. The ground was packed. Big well behaved crowds then but once you left your spot, no chance of getting it back. Teams were made up of “Guest players” and team players lucky enough to be around. My next two matches I was taken to, both Utd…at Maine Rd because Roslers grandad bombed Old Trafford!!!! I was propelled back to City though, mostly because of Frank Swift the goalkeeper, a wonderful keeper and showman, I have seen few his equal since. Supporting City then was also an adventure because if I used my bike to get to match the local houses let there backyards out,,,three pence for match time and gave you a ticket. By Bus, it was always two buses and they were always packed with a steady stream of them running from the centre of Manchester The atmosphere in the ground was exciting, no trouble and being wartime, plenty of uniforms, there was always a sense of watching something special, sometimes a star player, no matter what team but was held in a deep reverence that brought about an excitement..Joe Mercer was one such player along with Stanley matthews, peter Doherty, Tommy Lawton etc, So, the question…why City amongst a household of Utd fans….I do not know but it never bothered me…..or them. I even have a daughter a big Utd fan but I have been working on the grandchildren and doing OK with them…they wear blue!!!!

22nd November 2019 at 9:20 pm #53659I remember all this from Teamtalk Circa 2007/08 and being called or sort of ‘Banished’ as a ‘Glory-Hunter’.
I Truly Comprehend that Nuance in thought. Having Read Posts So Far However, Naturally, one would have had to be in Vicinity of a Positive Experience/Encounter/Winning Formula to Entice Support.
That’s Tolerance and Measurably So – Why Not?

22nd November 2019 at 10:06 pm #53665Nil, everyone is judged by what they post if people put up silly posts they will get called out on it no matter who they may be.
As you well know Chucky doesn’t refer to anyone by their posting names everyone has a nickname.
Threads like “Alternatives In balance” and your post that followed the combination of which nobody understood was always likely to draw unfavourable comments.
We will never all always agree but broadly speaking this is a very good site with lots of sensible debate and this has been a very good thread with lots of very interesting contributions let’s not spoil it.
