Nancy, of course the might Spuds are extra special! they have the most special manager with the most special CV π and all the fans turn up on those special buses too, some of which the special manager may use to park in front of goal π

22nd November 2019 at 8:30 am #53568Interesting stories,guys.. It’s funny, isn’t it, how random, sliding doors moments can affect the whole rest of your life, or at least your football life. So Pagan could have been a Notts County fan; Steveo could have been a Hammer; if Spurs hadn’t made that comeback, Chucky could have supported Southampton; Mikus and Nil could have been Man Utd (just trying to imagine Nil as Manu!!), and Mak could have been Celtic or even Everton. Only 9, Sean and myself, so far, had no choice to make.
Well, that has passed a few more hours before the Prem starts again. Thanks for your responses…it made interesting reading. If anyone else wants to add their bio, please do.

22nd November 2019 at 8:46 am #53571Double H… it was worse that cyber chum, there was only two footy nuts in my family, my Uncle who is Spud through and through, and an elder cousin who for reasons nobody ever truly worked out and very rarely set foot outside Upminster, Essex was actually a Liberoool fan… π
Funny story there, it was mid/late eighties and my cousin (who suffered from Spina-Bifida btw) had been nagging my Uncle and me to go to a footy match. So, finally we “relented” and my Uncle somehow got tickets for that seasons Spuds vs Liberoool game. We go to collect him, to discover him sitting in his wheelchair completely decked out in red stuff and no amount of persuasion was going to get him to change into something more “neutral”.
So off we go, 2 in “proper” colors, 1 in “silly” colors, get to the stadium with only a few “dodgy” glances, wheel him into the special area they had at the time, but unfortunately in front of about 9,000 Spurs fans.
Games kicks off, not the greatest of games, but Liberoool score first, so my dopey cousins spins he’s wheelchair around and starts giving it large with the 1-0’s (in perfect timing with all the Micky Mousers down the other end of the stadium) while my Uncle and I and kinda stepping away and trying to crawl into a hole. Thankfully, my fellow Spuds are top blokes and just a little bit of verbal bantz was returned.
But I will never forget in a million years what happened next. Spuds equalized, and the whole stand behind my cousin started singing “YOU’RE NOT SINGING ANYMORE!” while all pointing at my cousin… π
Brilliant moment, and one of the reasons why I love this game!!!
(Thankfully it finished 1-1…. π )

22nd November 2019 at 9:04 am #53576Made myself all sad now… π
He passed away in 09, about 2 months before my daughter was born (he was called Mathew and my daughter is called Matilda!), and I still have one of his old Liberoool shirts in the draw. You’ll never guess what the last match I ever saw with him was (on telly). That bloody “Miracle in Istanbul”. He was as pissed as a fart by the end of the evening in the pub and I had to push the big lump that he was all the way home (and it was uphill!)

22nd November 2019 at 9:13 am #53580Got another hilarious story about my cousin who melted his foot off in a fishing accident (I say accident, more like a Darwin Award!), and tried to by a Harley-trike from a bunch of bikers from Manchester with the insurance money… π

22nd November 2019 at 10:09 am #53584Good post HH, sorry only just picked up on it.
I started watching football in 86 after being mesmerised by a certain little Argentinian fella over in Mexico. I’m from Belfast originally although grew up in firstly in Essex and then more predominantly in Derbyshire. I remember in 86 asking my parents who people from Northern Ireland usually support and despite my Dad being a Spurs fan and his Dad an Arsenal fan they told me either Liverpool or Man Utd. As Liverpool had just won the double I opted for them. Probably not the most exciting reason!
I have spent most of my adult life moving about due to work so never really felt connection to any other team. I moved to Germany 5 years ago and tried to support Dortmund (1 hour drive away at the time) and went to a game (3-1 vs Berlin, start of the season, top row of their massive stadium in 35Β°c heat!), but there just wasn’t a connection. I now live in Cologne but again I really couldn’t care less what happens to FC KΓΆln. Maybe that would change if I get to a game, and I have to admit German matches do have good atmospheres. Maybe the fact you can have a beer in the stand helps! (I was amazed by the guy walking up and down the stands with a keg on his back serving people!)
Used to be a regular at Anfield around 2003-2006 as I was living in Norfolk and a member of the East Anglia Supporters club. I got tickets for anything I wanted, Champions League semi against Chelsea in 05 being the highlight.

22nd November 2019 at 10:38 am #53590Ok I will try again…
The reason I support Liverpool isn’t that exciting I’m afraid. I started watching football in 86 after being mesmerised by a certain little Argentinian fella in Mexico. I’m actually from Belfast originally but grew up in England. So in 86 I wanted a team to support and asked my parents who people from Northern Ireland usually follow and they told me either Liverpool or Man Utd. As Liverpool had just won the double I decided them.
I’ve moved about a lot due to work so never really had an attachment to another team. 5 years ago I moved to Germany and tried to support Dortmund (only 1 hour away at the time) and even went to a game (3-1 vs Berlin, 35Β°C and I had to climb every step to the very top of their massive stadium!) I now live in Cologne but I don’t really care about what happens to FC KΓΆln. Maybe that would change if I went to a game, which by the way are usually great atmospheres in Germany, maybe due to the fact you can have a beer in the stand. (I was gobsmacked by the man walking up and down the stands with a keg on his back serving people whilst the game was playing! Never in England!).
When I lived in Norfolk I was a frequent visitor to Anfield as I was a member of the local supporters club and got tickets no problem. Probably around 2004-2007 I think. The best game I went to was the 2005 CL semi vs Chelsea.

22nd November 2019 at 10:44 am #53591Chucks, I’m sure Sean didn’t mean it like that to suggest Liverpool were any greater than another club.
One thing I would say though is only a few oppositions club supporters actually ‘get it’ as to why we’re so desperate to win the league.

22nd November 2019 at 10:56 am #53596Chelsea fans were desperate to win the League for 50 years and Spurs fans have been desperate for Spurs to win the League for almost 60 years. 30 years is a blink of the eye by comparison!?
