Actually just checked nine, 1st to 4th is CL
5th place ELFA Cup winners-EL unless already qualified for CL or EL In which case 6th place is awarded EL qualification
League Cup winners qualify for Eurooa conference unless already qualified for Europe via league, in which case that place would go to the highest laced pren team who have not qualified for European competition.
As convoluted as ever 😊
Most years only 6 prem teams in total will play across the 3 competitions but could be 7 which is max allowed.

9th November 2021 at 6:19 pm #188717Even 7th looks tough currently but Villa finished 6th previously albeit a while back,to get there it would need investment and as you pointed out there’s a lot of competition.
Right Manager and right signings could give them a chance. West Ham were fighting relegation two seasons ago now they’re challenging for the CL.

9th November 2021 at 6:49 pm #188718Hard to judge how well Gerrard is doing as a manager in the SPL. If I were him, my next club would be in the Championship. He’d be less in the limelight and the expectations wouldn’t be quite as high. At this stage of his fledgling managerial career where you’re still developing your man management and tactical skills, you don’t want to work on that in the pressure cooker of the Premier league. Many top coaches start in the lower divisions before then joining a top club.

9th November 2021 at 8:49 pm #188723Mikus….I think Gerrard to a good Championship club would be good for him also, His learning curve has started but it cannot develop in Scottish football, Championship is a step up or even League1. If it was me I would certainly be looking now, see this season out if he has to but next year he needs to get in the fight here

10th November 2021 at 11:08 am #188741“According to The Telegraph, Gerrard is interested in taking the top job at Villa Park and the west Midlands clubs are now set to make an official approach to Rangers.
The former England international is currently tied down to the Scottish club until 2024, but Villa are willing to shell out at least a couple of million to activate his release clause.”
Bit of water still to flow under the Bridge yet but it looks like this might happen.

10th November 2021 at 11:16 am #188742I think he needs a job between Rangers & Liverpool (which I think we all know will happen) but the Villa job I’m not sure is best – he could finish 9th and that could well be the best he could finish, but the club may not be happy and his reputation and confidence could take a knock. I certainly don’t think he should be thinking he’s got to take it. Opportunities in this climate with a dearth of good managers will always come round again soon enough. Unless he knows there’s going to be a hefty budget there.

10th November 2021 at 11:27 am #188744Seems to be a catch 22… does he go to Villa so people can see what he can (or maybe not) can do… or hold out for a ton of cash for the Villa job (sounds like he wants a “cheat” mode!)… or wait until the LiVARberoOol gig to show up… but then, of course, and legend or not, would FSG even consider appointting a manager who spent several years in a 2 horse race sitting on one of the favourites?? I suspect they wouldn’t… would you?
I think, especailly from a FSG angle, I think he needs to prove himself a bit more before he’s given to the keys to the kingdom…
I think Villa would be a good move, any club “smaller” than that, and he might as well stay in Scotland… and other than LiVARberoOol, I really don’t see a bigger club than Villa taking the gamble…

10th November 2021 at 11:30 am #188745Banjo, look at the American owned Arsenal & Utd who have appointed former players with little management experience to play a long term strategy. I think there’ll be a massive temptation to do the same with Gerrard at Liverpool after Klopp. Can’t see FSG appointing a big gun who will want a big budget.

10th November 2021 at 12:15 pm #188747Maybe, Micky, maybe… it’s kind of a “free swing” for FSG to do the same. The fans certainly aren’t going to complain, and if it all goes a bit Pete Tong (and let’s face it, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise) there won’t be much fall-out in their direction.
Admittedly, whoever follows Kloop is going to have a bloody hard job keeping them at the level they’re already at (see, I can be reasonable!), and as a neutral, Wellard Gerrard has done nothing to convince me he’s capable of that.
The really smart move, I think, for Gerrard, would very possible be staying in Scotland until the chap after Kloop has had a go…

I agree. He also has European football up there. I think some of these premier league jobs can be poisoned chalices.

10th November 2021 at 1:39 pm #188750I’m sure Gerrard harbours thoughts of managing Liverpool but it could be a poison chalice following Klopp and will FSG even give him the chance or will they go for a more experienced Manager when Klopp calls it a day?
Currently Gerrard has no experience of managing in the PL which is a much tougher League than the SPL that’s the challenge for him..
Personally I can see no benefits in Gerrard staying in Scotland it’s a poor two Club League he’s already led Rangers to the title and has nothing else to prove there’s much more to prove with Villa in the PL of course it could go wrong which could set him back but that’s the chance everyone in football management takes.

10th November 2021 at 2:01 pm #188751Think it depends on the club. Viera looks to have found a good opportunity at Palace, and although they became established in the league under Hodgson, I don’t think there was a huge expectation or big targets on him going in. At Villa, it’s a bigger club and they seem to be have higher targets and it looks a tougher challenge.
Also the likes of Tuchel & Klopp only managed the likes of Mainz before the bigger Dortmund job.

True enough Mikus but it was still the Bundesliga which is a bit more of a challenging League than the SPL.
At the end of the day though it won’t matter what we all think it will all be about want Gerrard thinks is right for him not an easy decision for him and certainly not a done deal he will go to Villa.

10th November 2021 at 2:25 pm #188755Yeah I think viera backed himself big time going to palace, taking over one of the weakest squads in league from one of the most experienced managers in English football. He has made some very good signings and doing so much better than people thought would be possible so early on given the circumstances. I had a lot of respect for him as a player but he has earned even more know for the balls and talent he has shown.

10th November 2021 at 2:30 pm #188757Given a straight choice tomorrow between Wellard Gerrard and Paddy V., my head knows which one I would choose, that’s for sure…
But then again, if it was based on other things, I think I would rather have Mr. Magoo if I’m honest! 🙂

10th November 2021 at 5:09 pm #188768“Michael Edwards is leaving Liverpool at the end of the season – but the Reds have already got their man in place to take over as sporting director.
Edwards will depart at the end of the season when his contract runs down.
And Julian Ward – currently in the role of assistant sporting director – will be promoted into the key position.
While owners FSG made repeated attempts to convince Edwards to extend his tenure at Liverpool, Ward was identified as a potential successor some time ago.”

10th November 2021 at 6:36 pm #188777Notice how Steve Bruce’s smiling face turned sour when he realized England were not going to win, the bowlers really let England down, very disappointing as they were in a great position with only a few overs to go.
