Have to disagree Chris. Looking at the 08 CL winning side, the only players that would get in IMO would be Walker at RB, Silva/De Bruyne at LW and a toss between Fernandinho and Hargreaves. Aguero vs Rooney/Tevez would be debatable and the side would do well with any. Rio, Vidic, Evra, Scholes, Van De Sar, Scholes, Ronaldo would easy be Peps first choice if he had what he has now at City and that United side.

18th December 2017 at 6:55 pm #9199cm, City though are 13 points better off than at the same stage last season and have scored 21 goals more.
However you cut it mate and you can sometimes make stats say what you want them to say the football City are serving up is some of the best football I’ve seen in the PL and City might well break all previous PL records the majority of which are held by Chelsea.
As I touched upon and as the Ed has added to I think we might well be entering a period of domination in the PL from City that we’ve not seen since the best Fergie years.

18th December 2017 at 7:03 pm #9200I think the question is a moot point. It does not bother me whether CM thinks United sides of years gone by are better. Hes a united fan and obviously not happy with being totally outplayed at old trafford then hanging on to second place by scraping past bournmouth and west brom with the benefit of some luck and some fortuitous decisions all while playing some really negative football. All I know is that I am really enjoying watching this City side and they are breaking a few records. Many pundits are saying this is the best side they have seen in the PL so we must be doing something right. Cheers Jim

18th December 2017 at 7:07 pm #9201Fair point CM on that 08 side. I think Sane would have been pushing for a place somewhere in that side too though

18th December 2017 at 7:07 pm #9202Agree Nine. I am not trying to beat City down, even though it may look that way. I have said watching this City side is a joy and I am a United fan.
My overall point is that if you put the Chelsea that only lost 1 game from 2005 in this current campaign, how do you think their will do? I reckon with the quality of teams compared then to now, they would give City a run for their money. Same as the 08 United CL winning team, putting them in this campaign, I believe things would be close. Drogba in his prime played against Carragher, Hyppia, Rio, Vidic, Ledley King, Sol Campbell etc, defenders whp were considered extremely good and world class. He would have a field day against the likes of Jones, Smalling, Lovren, Otamendi, Mangala, Mustafe and co imo.

18th December 2017 at 7:18 pm #9203First there was Man Utd and Arsenal, then briefly Blackburn came to play, then Chelsea joined in. So there were 3 with a big gap to anyone else. Now we have 6+ teams with very little gap to the rest, points are now more easily dropped. I donβt think the chasing teams are far off what theyβve been in the past in general, itβs just Man City have made a step change rather than a slow evolution and have opened up a bit of a gap. I would say this, team this season is probably the best weβve ever seen, can they keep that lead in the coming seasons or will the rest step up to the plate….Pagan

18th December 2017 at 7:23 pm #9204It’s very much a moot point Jim. All that matters is what’s happening at the moment and currently it looks like City will be winning the title playing some of the best football we’ve seen in the PL.
The Utd fan in me is devastated. The football fan in me is very much enjoying the brand of football being played and I think, much like how Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal raised the standard of the league, it’s City now who are forcing everyone else to step up a few notches and that can only be good news for the future of the PL, both domestically but also for the PL teams in Europe as our sides have been lagging behind for a few years now.

18th December 2017 at 7:56 pm #9207I started this thread because a lot of pundits, some journalists and fans have said this City side is the best side in PL history. It is open to debate, just wanted to get what others fans think how this side would fare against previous great PL winning sides. Who would you pick from the selection in your starting 11 and so on.

18th December 2017 at 8:06 pm #9210City are certainly one of the best PL sides I’ve seen and I always look forward to watching their live games.
But as always beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
City are my guilty pleasure though.?
And I am a massive fan of that little genius David Silva. I always wanted Chelsea to sign him when he was at Valencia but he’s hitting even greater heights now.

18th December 2017 at 8:07 pm #9211Personally I think it was a good thread. I also think that its good for the forum to have a few more United fans on the here. All this agreement is very nice but it doesn’t encourage alot of debate, a few slightly contentious threads will do! As long as the debate doesn’t get nasty and I’m sure the Ed will keep it that way. 18th December 2017 at 8:15 pm #9212Ok Jim point taken.
I hate City and that Pep Guardiola who only manages big sides with big budgets.
Lets see how good Pep would be managing Swansea with their budget.???
Just joshing mate, I’m a footie fan first and a Chelsea fan second and I had the same problems when admiring the Liverpool side of the late 80’s, the United side of the 90’s and the Arsenal invincibles.?

Everyone has views, they usually never quite match. Football has times where some teams are just better than the rest, in that time then!! Itβs so difficult to compare players from different decades let alone teams. Just seems you are not a happy bunny with the sways of congrats aimed at City every single week. Add to that the way your team is playing and getting owned in the derby and you decide to air your views by digging us out. Sorry but as an active member of this site and hopefully one thatβs welcome here I canβt sit here and read you digging away without defending my team.
Can I ask what is this team you keep talking about? List it please, Iβd like to see it and see if any of our players could get into it.

18th December 2017 at 10:28 pm #9220Having supported City since the early 70’s, all this talk of being the best PL team ever doesn’t interest me in the slightest. I have been to the likes of Wycombe, York and Lincoln and seen us get beat on cold, wet, windy Wednesdays, back in the day. I feel that I (like a number of other City fans on here) have paid my dues where City are concerned.
We are in a good position to win the PL this season but it’s still not even half way through. And even if we don’t, I’ll still feel very privileged, witnessing football that at times takes my breath away.
Anyway, fingers crossed for the rest of the season.

18th December 2017 at 10:33 pm #9221Goatista-
If you read my post again, I also said some good things about City, for example-
This city side are spectacular to watch, no other side with the exception of Liverpool in the 2nd half of the 2014 season have come close imo.
2 rival teams I have complimented.
Pep has got them playing in a unstoppable unit. I am a massive fan of Pep when it comes to styles of play, the PL needed him in order for others to take notice and evolve.
About a year ago on teamtalk I wrote the following, it was mainly aimed at the international than domestic, yet had the same point I was making.
I gave an example of the quality of defenders Drogba was up against compared to the quality now. IMO today he would have a field day with some of the quality defenders on show.
I am not sure what the current United form has got to do with this? My post was purely based on what pundits, fans and some journalists are saying about this City side. As I said earlier-
United have improved but on their day are lacklustre
I agree United are poor to watch at times.
I will give you the 99 and 08 United starting line up-
Schmeichel, Gary Neville, Stam, Johnson, Irwin, Giggs, Beckham, Keane, Scholes, Yorke, Cole
08- Van Der Sar, Brown, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra, Hargreaves/Carrick, Scholes, Nani/Giggs, Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez
The great Chelsea side of last decade-
Cech, Ferreira, Carvalho, Terry, Cole, Robben, Duff, Essien/Makalele, Lampard, Drogba, Gudjohnsen/Anelka
Arsenal 98-
Seamen, Dixon, Winterburn, Adams, Keown, Petit, Vieira, Overmars, Parlour, Anelka, Bergkamp
02- Seaman, Cole, Luaren, Campbell, Adams/Keown, Pires, Ljungberg, Vieira, Edu, Kanu/Bergkamp, Henry
04- Lehmann, Lauren, Cole, Campbell, Toure, Vieira, Silva, Pires, Ljungberg, Henry, Bergkamp.
These are teams considered PL great, some competing against each other. Including Citys today, pick your best 11 from that lot and how do you think this City side would fare against them and how do you think the teams above would get on in the PL today.

18th December 2017 at 10:40 pm #9222CM, great teams find ways to win, they work out the weaknesses of the teams they play and capitalise on them, great players are the ones that make the best descisions most of the time. Currently thatβs City, but any of the great teams you mention would be able to compete today, as they would find a way to win…..Pagan

19th December 2017 at 7:35 am #9224Personally I think it’s very difficult to compare teams from different eras and claim that one or other of them is the best team of all time.
I’ve only ever seen black and white footage of the “Busby Babes” but a lot of people think had it not been for the tragedy of Munich that team very possibly could have been the best team of all time.
Sadly that team never got to realise it’s potential.
In the here and now City look to be a wonderful team who are likely to only get better but to truly confirm themselves as a truly great team they probably need to dominate and win the Champions League and you wouldn’t bet against it perhaps even this season doubling it up with the PL title.
