27-Yes m8,very true! Thats why we have to reserve our judgement of Poch until he has been given the financial backing Jose and the others have.If Jose and Klopp dont win anything this year, and Pep fails to win the CL,they too would be failures imho.

I would put a case forward that they are all good managers, based on the comment, money is the deciding factor, we all know this is not the case, it did not apply to Leicester and others will pop up I think football will become more unpredictable, money or not. As a personal observation, if you look at the game 10/20 years ago and what we see now the teams at the lower end to day would have been at the top decades ago, Money was not the issue then as it is talked about, yes big transfers did take place but now the prices are a nonsense. Back to Managers, they work with what they have, some are good at it even if they do not have the recourses…that is what makes them a good manager. Those that have the money have to manage it differently, nobody is perfect and the PL does grind away at logic sometimes. Take the “experts” and media sensationalist out of it and allow them to do there job. I would even be in favour of no manager being replaced once the season has started. OK Jose…you are safe now!!!!!!!!!

It says something that clubs like Chelsea and Arsenal no longer categorise their managers as managers but as “head coaches”. Chelsea seem to be showing the way in the modern era in that they do not build their teams around their managers, hence when they regularly chop and change them, there is more of a seamless transition because the club are buying the players and the manager is “simply” coaching them. So money or no money, (and to follow on from Brian’s point above) the modern coach or manager still ultimately has to work with what he has, not necessarily what he wants . That is still the main criteria of where a manager is judged because even if a club fails to bring in new players for a new season, if the performance level of the team still drops, the manager will still be the fall guy.

Moyes was sacked not because he didn’t get who he wanted but because he failed to get the best out of what he had.

Key question for the United board then, is Mourinho getting the best out of what he has?? That is what will ultimately decide his fate over the coming months. I know he came second last year, but he was helped by the fact that Arsenal and Chelsea had poor seasons and also that Liverpool got distracted by the CL.

How many Leicester’s though have their been in the top division in the last 50 years and I doubt that any of us on here will see another Leicester come along and win a PL title in our life times.

If you can afford the best, buy the right players and have a good Coach you’ve got more than half a chance, the difference between where City and United respectively isn’t down to money because in the last couple of years both have spent similarly albeit City have spent a bit more primarily the difference is down to the quality of squads that both Pep and Jose inherited the playing styles both have tried to implement and the quality of players both have bought and sadly for United fans across all three of those criteria Pep comes out on top.

…. Also Lverpool look the real deal now because Klopp faced up to his defensive problems and bought in defensive quality both in Goal and at Centre back costing just shy of £150m.

Stuffed in a mattress in Malmo more like… 🙂

For me, there’s very obviously two very different types of managers, both equally good. You have the managers who can improve a side by building it slowly and improving players they already have, and then there are others who can simply tinker with a very good side aided by a very generous Chairman. The problem us cyber warriors have is simply it’s very rare for a manager to do both these days, they tend to get bracketed very quickly in their careers…

For the records, I think those managers who can actually improve a side by coaching rather than simply spotting gaps in their teams and buying “better” players are held in higher regard (at least in my house they are!).

You look at the players some managers improved. People were laughing at us for signing ox and Robertson yet klopp has drastically improved them

Pep has improved a heap of players aswell and other managers have done the same

Nine- we will see how good Liverpool are and if they can really challenge over the next 4 pl games

Chelsea, spurs and city are 3 of our next 4 games

                        That’s a run and a half… we’ve got your mob next and then 5 “lesser” teams… (at 6 different stadiums! 🙂 )

Sean, what’s impressed me the most about Liverpool this season is their defence and it seems to me that the signings of VVD and Alisson have significantly raised the bar at Liverpool defensively forget the silly mistake Alisson made v Leicester that’s easily solvable.

I still think Liverpool are a bit thin squad wise and still lack a bit of creativity which might well cost them in the final analysis but if the stay relatively injury free I think they will go close.

Completely agree about the different type of managers Chucky. It annoys me a bit though when Mourinho is bracketed as one of those who can merely tinker with a very good side with bags of money in order to win trophies. In my opinion, his greatest achievements have come when he’s been up against much bigger spenders. I don’t think he’d particularly suited to being top dog
