20th August 2019 at 12:35 am #45876Ed, I was hoping we’ve already had our dip.?
Frank can’t be judged imo until he’s got a full squad to choose from and he’s had a chance to fill some of the obvious gaps in the team with a striker for instance although where we find one of those is anybody’s guess.
I know he went into the role eyes wide open but I can’t think of a Manager coming into a top Club whose come in with so many difficulties to face.
The Club’s best player and arguably the best player in the League sold, half a dozen of his squad injured some long term, a transfer ban, United away and Liverpool in his first two games followed by probably the best of the rest in Leicester. And he inherited the striker problem too.
Where Chelsea finish next season after a Summer transfer window and the progress Frank has made then will decide how he’s doing imo but we’ve already seen some of the most exciting offensive play we’ve seen from any Chelsea side in some time and the emergence of a very bright new talent in Mount who would have surely been loaned out again under previous Chelsea Manager’s. Cheers 9’s

20th August 2019 at 8:28 am #45887Ashley Cole on Frank Lampard.
“Yeah [it is the toughest job under Abramovich], I agree,”
“I think if you said to Frank now ‘you can keep this team or add players, and you can buy who you want’, he’s going to add a lot of players.
“So yes, it is the hardest job.
“But as we keep going back to, I think whether they’ve had a conversation, Frank and Roman and the people behind the scenes, in terms of saying: ‘You will have time, try ride through this period, try establish some young players and then we’ll see where we are with the ban and then you can add quality’.
“I think if you’ve got to give credit to Frank for taking the job because it’s not an easy job.
“He done such a good job at Derby last season.”
Seems like a plan.?

20th August 2019 at 2:16 pm #45946Strange to be deciding penalty takers on the field of play. It cost United being top of the table last night.
Looks like a race between United and Arsenal for 4th place United look a bit stronger defensively to me whilst Arsenal look a bit stronger offensively be close imo.

20th August 2019 at 2:26 pm #45948Mason Mount makes the PL team of the week.?
CM: Mason Mount (Chelsea) – 8.22
Coming in for some relatively harsh criticism following the defeat to Manchester United, Mount received the backing of Frank Lampard to retain his place against Leicester and certainly repaid that faith. Opening his account for the season on what was his home debut having robbed Wilfred Ndidi of possession, the youngster had five attempts in total as well as chipping in with three tackles and two interceptions.
This lad could be a real player imo and had Sarri still been Manager he would have probably been sent out on loan again. Credit to Lampard for his confidence in him and giving him his chance.

20th August 2019 at 10:05 pm #46001Nine, I think you’re placing way too much faith in a vastly inexperienced Utd manager with a very poor squad in need of several windows to properly fix. I’d be extremely surprised if Utd got top 4. Our league position last season of 6th is about where we deserve to be right now. Our backup striker is 17 year old Mason Greenwood, who we’ll have to rely on if anyone gets injured. Chelsea can call upon the main striker from France’s World Cup winning squad from last year in Giroud. Our main right winger, if we even have one, is a young Daniel James who Swansea were trying to flog only last year.
You might be right that Chelsea don’t get 4th but it won’t be for Utd being in the way, without Ole is replaced in time for someone to bring some more faces in in January.
People forget Utd lost Hererra, Fellaini, Valencia, Lukaku. They’re not all top class players but aside from Maguire, we’ve signed 2 players with potential and are expecting academy players to replace our outgoing midfielders and forwards. All under a coach who has won a couple of things in Norway. I’d love it to work out for Ole but I can’t help but think he’s so far out of his depth and is being carried by his experienced coaching team. To go from 6th to 4th without really strengthening in the necessary areas is one hell of a leap.
Will be very interested to see who lasts longer in Ole and Lampard. I don’t think either will be there in 12 months, frankly.

20th August 2019 at 10:41 pm #46003Ed, United do lack a bit if creativity in midfield and James might be a prospect but I suspect Ole wouldn’t have thrown him in now had he got the players he wanted.
United are potentially a bit light in the striker department too.
Chelsea will get better when they get all their injured players back whilst Giroud might be a World Cup winner he just doesn’t score enough goals and ultimately our best option might be Michy this season.
I think it’s more difficult to predict 4th place this season than any season previously I can’t see Chelsea getting higher than 6th and currently that looks ambitious. The only thing that might change that would be the lifting of the ban with Chelsea being able to make Somme unlikely signings in January unlikely in both counts imo.
United despite their weaknesses look like the best all round team to me of all the 4th placed challengers although if Arsenal get stronger defensively they will be strong contenders.
I agree for United to get to where they really want to be will take time and several transfer windows but I think they might have just about enough to claim 4th place as may Arsenal.

21st August 2019 at 7:48 am #46008Pretty much covers it Steveo!
Nine, I seem to remember us having a similar conversation last season about both clubs with you saying Utd would get top 4 and Chelsea would struggle to get top 4. We all know what happened then ?. If what you’re saying really happens and Chelsea don’t even get 6th Lampard is a dead man walking. The Chelsea squad isn’t that much worse than the one that won the EL last season and finished a very impressive 3rd.

21st August 2019 at 8:18 am #46010So it seems the general consensus is that Utd are crap, Chelsea are crap and Arsenal are Arsenal, surely this must be the best chance for a team like Wolves or Leicester to gatecrash top 4? Would like Wolves to do it, enjoy their style of play and Neves looks like a player that could shine in the Champions League.

21st August 2019 at 8:24 am #46011Ed, and I would have been right had it not been for United’s inexplicable late collapse.?
And Chelsea finished in a false position last season due to the way all three of Arsenal, Spurs and United collapsed in the last few games.
But you’re right of course bar Hazard Chelsea have the same team they had last season that finished 3rd and won the EL and Pulisic has joined the squad now too but all the other teams around them have spent significant sums and Arsenal are a much stronger team than they were last season whilst Frank hasn’t been able to plug any of the gaps which given a free hand in the transfer market he would have done.
Once Chelsea have got all their players back fit and playing I think they are good enough for a top 6 finish and if the transfer ban was lifted for January and Frank was able to sign a striker of some merit I wouldn’t rule out a late run for 4th place.
But currently I think United and Arsenal are the favourites for 4th place.
Wherever Chelsea finish though this season I think Frank can’t be truly judged until next season when he has had the opportunity of a Summer transfer window to plug the gaps in the team.
He took the job knowing Chelsea had sold their best player responsible for 42% of the goals scored last season and even then we were struggling for goals and he’s had to contend with a two window transfer ban too a lot of Managers wouldn’t have taken the job in those circumstances and he deserves at least that imo no matter where we finish. Cheers 9’s

21st August 2019 at 8:29 am #46012threeps, I think Wolves will find it more difficult to juggle EL games on a Thursday night with the PL the most likely to crash the top 6 imo are Leicester but I still think the top 4 remains a tough ask for the chasing clubs like Leicester, Wolves and Everton.

21st August 2019 at 11:08 am #46022Ed, I would worry for lamps if we finish below 6th, but our team is a lot weaker without hazard and you bloody well know it! your a utd fan, he was the difference every time we beat you. We were lucky to finish 3rd last year, it was thanks to spurs and arsenal, not in spite of them, and that was with hazard. Lamps has not been able to improve and still dont have one striker that comes close to those at the other top 6 clubs. Spurs, arsenal and utd have strengthened while chelsea have weakened, this is crystal clear to all, lamps has the least pressure of all, if solskjaer or emery finish lower than lamp’s chelsea then either lamps will deserve a knighthood or they will deserve shooting!
