19th October 2021 at 2:18 pm #186799Ultimately if 18 clubs agree and 2 don’t, maybe the 2 should get kicked out?

19th October 2021 at 2:25 pm #186802True enough Lucky although FFP had all the Club’s signed up to it before it’s introduction.
City couldn’t vote for this rule change as it would put at jeopardy a number of their sponsorships and seemingly Newcastle were planning to go down the same path.
Be interesting to see where it all goes from here.

19th October 2021 at 2:32 pm #186803“Premier League clubs have united in a bid to limit Newcastle Unitedβs ability to secure lucrative sponsorship deals following their Saudi takeover.
At an emergency meeting on Monday a vote was passed that ensures the clubβs new owners would not be able strike hyper-inflated arrangements involving pre-existing business relationships.
Amid fears the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, which completed its takeover of Newcastle two weeks ago, would be able to land deals with companies in its homeland, the Premier League have invoked a temporary ban on such deals.
Clubs believed it would be anti-competitive and sought for measures to be put in place that mean any arrangements would be blocked or secured for a fair market value.
The vote was passed with an 18-2 majority.
Other than Newcastle, the only other club to object the motion was Manchester City, who are owned by Abu Dhabi. The Premier League champions have been subject to investigations over their sponsorship β but were last year cleared by the Court of Arbitration for Sport after UEFA banned them from the Champions League for two seasons following βserious breachesβ of Financial Fair Play.
The initial legislation will be in place for only a month, but clubs will seek for a permanent arrangement to be put in place. Evening Standard 19/10

19th October 2021 at 3:08 pm #186806Nine….who decides what is a fair market value???? Does it also mean that other clubs cannot get the amount they want from there sponsors so find a necessary tool to block anybody else. It will all end in tears when sponsorships are re-newed for all clubs and as things go then have to be vetted. Also, how many sponsors can you have? We have all said at one point or another. “Football is a business” well let them get on with it and get “the suits” do something about improving other aspects of the game which they have neglected over the years.
I do not like the principle of Sponsors influencing events in football but once you start to close doors, you can be sure, others will spring open and probably worse than the original proposal._____________________________

19th October 2021 at 3:26 pm #186807AnonymousFootball is a business but the funneling of inflated money in is more like Good Fellas style stuff, Brian. Business must comply to regulation, so this is nothing alien to it.
I’m in favour of sponsorship deals being vetted. There are ways of calculating commercial value, they won’t be picking some arbitrary or limiting figure.

19th October 2021 at 3:27 pm #186808Related sponsorships are highly questionable Brian. It’s not difficult to market value a sponsorship there are for instance examples of the value of shirt sponsorships amongst Clubs to reflect what is a fair market value sponsorship same applies to Stadium namings etc.
If there aren’t rules that govern the above it leaves the way open for country owned Clubs to filter illicit sponsorship monies into the Club’s they own.

19th October 2021 at 6:50 pm #186810Forget the fair market value, sponsorship from companies owned by same people that own club are obvious attempts to avert FFP because if FFP wasn’t a factor they wouldn’t need to go through sponsor(s), they could just pour money straight into club.
As far as I am aware Newcastle agreed to FFP so should accept that there are measures being put in place to stop clubs going around the rule. As should city.
If it was spurs bought by Saudi, not Newcastle, Newcastle would have voted for this rule.

20th October 2021 at 10:29 am #186871Fonseca, Howe and Favre are allegedly on the 3 man short list to replace Bruce at Newcastle all are probably better than Bruce but not top names.
Newcastle need to do the decent thing and put Bruce out of his misery asap that should really have happened last week. Formulating short lists and allegedly planning interviews whilst Bruce remains in place seems more than harsh on Bruce.

20th October 2021 at 11:50 am #186877It’s time clubs put in a clause if the managers or coaches don’t perform with results they don’t get paid out or a reasonable ratio only, I mean Steve Bruce is getting out 8 million quid on top of everything else. Nothing against him but they laying bottom and have a massive fight on their hands to avoid relegation, a real tough job whoever comes in.

20th October 2021 at 11:50 am #186878Let’s face it, Nepolean, if they invited you in for a chat or offered you a “mutually terminated” fax, what would you take??
(And I bet the fax had the word terminated underlined too…)

20th October 2021 at 1:01 pm #186880Good to see Newcastle doing the right thing Bruce was a dead man walking and was never going to be part of Newcastle going forwards but he will be well looked after.
Where Newcastle go now will be interesting the alleged short list although probably an improvement on Bruce wouldn’t fill me with confidence if I was a Newcastle fan and I doubt any of those on the short list will be there at the end of next season but one of them just might keep Newcastle up this season which to be fair is currently the most important task.
