24th February 2022 at 8:05 pm #194508Adlab, apart from Roman the only other Russian involved at Chelsea is Marina Granovskaia and she is a joint Russian/Canadian national.

24th February 2022 at 8:28 pm #194509Having dual nationality makes no difference when it comes to sanctions.

24th February 2022 at 8:52 pm #194511The government should seize the assets of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, a Labour MP has said, citing concerns about alleged links to corruption.
Chris Bryant told MPs he had a leaked Home Office document which suggested the Chelsea Football Club owner should not be able to base himself in the UK.
Mr Bryant said it was written in 2019 and “little” had been done since then.
A spokesperson for Mr Abramovich declined to comment.
Replying to Mr Bryant, senior minister Mark Spencer said the government had taken “very strong action against high-profile Russian individuals who are of concern”.
Abramovich gets apology over false Putin claim
PM misspoke over Roman Abramovich sanction claim
Sanctions urged for Russians in English football
Downing Street would not be drawn on the claims about Mr Abramovich made in the Commons. The PM’s spokesman said: “I couldn’t comment on individuals in that way or on leaked documents of that type.”Earlier this week the government announced it would impose sanctions on three billionaires with close links to President Vladimir Putin as part of the UK’s response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
Mr Abramovich is one of Russia’s richest people and is believed to be close to President Putin.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Bryant urged the government to take action against Mr Abramovich, including removing his ownership of Chelsea Football Club and seizing his assets.
Quoting from the leaked Home Office document, he said: “‘As part of HMG’s [Her Majesty’s Government] Russia strategy aimed at targeting illicit finance and malign activity, Abramovich remains of interest to HMG due to his links to the Russian state and his public association with corrupt activity and practices. An example of this is Abramovich admitting in court proceedings that he paid for political influence. Therefore HMG is focused on ensuring individuals linked to illicit finance and malign activity are unable to base themselves in the UK and will use the relevant tools at its disposal, including immigration powers to prevent this’.”
Mr Bryant noted that the document had been produced three years ago and said: “Surely Mr Abramovich should no longer be able to own a football club in this country?
“Surely we should be looking at seizing some of his assets including his Β£152m home?”

As well as owning Chelsea, Mr Abramovich is also the primary owner of the private investment company Millhouse LLC.He built his fortune in oil following the collapse of the former Soviet Union in the 1990s.
In 2018, Mr Abramovich experienced delays when applying to extend his visa to stay in the UK and eventually withdrew his application.
In October 2021, the businessman’s spokesperson confirmed he travelled to London as an Israeli citizen – therefore entering the United Kingdom without the need for a visa.
Tier 1 investor visas, offering foreign investors fast-track residency in the UK, are being scrapped with immediate effect, Home Secretary Priti Patel

24th February 2022 at 8:53 pm #194512Number one, Marina is not associated with Putin, two, she is neither oligarch. simply she is a director of an English football club. if there is anyone who may likely face sanctions, it could be Abrahamovic. But he has been clever enough to move the bulk of his assets to Israel where he took up Israeli citizenship. As for the calls of taking Chelsea away from Abrahamovic, they are just heresy at best. plenty of rumours which most are made up by the media.
As I said in my last post, the priority right now is to save the people of Ukraine from the aggressor which Putin is. the world needs to look for alternatives in which to hit Putin very hard. mostly, these sanctions don’t hit the intended targets. The international community must do everything to stop Putin, before things get out of hand.

24th February 2022 at 9:12 pm #194513Adlab. as I said previously the Government has already taken action against Abramovich by refusing to renew his Visa which prevents him from living in the UK that was 4 years ago now.
“HMG is focused on ensuring individuals linked to illicit finance and malign activity are unable to base themselves in the UK and will use the relevant tools at its disposal, including immigration powers to prevent thisβ.β
Presumably the above statement is why the Government refused Abramovich his Visa.
Any further actions against Abramovich is up to the UK Government and it’s difficult to predict either way but it’s their call.

24th February 2022 at 9:14 pm #194514Adlab,
I’m not an expert on international law, but my understanding is, for one to be a legitimate target for sanctions, they should be involved in one of the following activities:
1. Associated or Sponsoring violence by financing tyrants who attack their people or other countries or financing Terrorism.
2. Must have questionable human rights record either directly or via his companies.
3. be involved in money laundering, or have a questionable source of wealth.I’m not sure if Abrahamovic is neither involved nor has ever been mentioned in those activities mentioned. they may try to drag him just because he is a friend of Putin and in that way. but if you want to sanction his assets outside Russia, you are also risking diplomatic row with other countries such as Israel. Any sanctions targeting Abrahamovic must be to his companies in Russia. All those MPs jumping to Abrahamovic are people like us who are emotional.
Make no mistake! I’m not defending Abrahamovic if he is guilty and the UK government has legitimate grounds to sanction him. Then he should serve his punishment. But right now, he is innocent until proven otherwise.

25th February 2022 at 1:31 pm #194524Given that Abramovich is probably the highest profile Oligarch itβs interesting that no action has so far been taken against him despite the very broad raft of sanctions announced by the UK Government already.
I certainly wouldnβt rule out future sanctions being taken against Abramovich although any sanctions will be focussed on Abramovich rather than Chelsea Football Club though sanctions on Abramovich will almost certainly impact on the Club.
However what happens to Abramovich and Chelsea FC is of much much less importance imo to what is happening to Ukraine and the people of Ukraine.
Pray for Ukraine! πβπ

25th February 2022 at 4:55 pm #194531I was lucky enough to go to Kyiv in 2018 for the Champions League Final, and had a fantastic 3 days there, Beautiful, welcoming and friendly people. It’s just heart breaking seeing what is being done to them and their country by the megalomaniac Putin, who in a matter of weeks has taken Europe back to the 1930’s.
It’s so difficult to see a solution to this now, and Putin has shown his colours and the lengths he’ll go to. It’s frightening to think where this might end. My thoughts are with those in Ukraine and those who have family and friends there,

27th February 2022 at 10:33 am #194591Cheers Hightown – just had quite a couple of years. Lost two close family members, mum and sister both to cancer, then caught covid which nearly finished me off – then changed jobs for a big role which just kept getting bigger. Finally coming up for air. Was relieved to see I could still login and my avatar appeared π
