Notice how weak centre halves are this season, not all teams but most teams.

22nd November 2020 at 12:42 pm #170631Pagan, thinking a little more about that, managers at elite level surely can’t have more than an average of 3 years at a job before getting sacked or moving on, its how much better he does than most in those 3 years that makes him truly special and truly great.
Sure must be very hard to play for him but same with fergie, difference is at utd the players knew fergie ruled and they would lose any attempt to undermine him, for Jose at Chelsea and utd that was never the case and the players could always get away with downing tools when they got tired of him.

22nd November 2020 at 12:47 pm #170633Pagan, if that’s his approach in just being short-term and moving on and that’s his way to map out his CV, then that’s fine, but it’s his behaviour and mentality. In that cycle there’s a creation of a siege mentality and blame when things go wrong.
Maybe Levy being mindful of this, is taking a bit of a side-seat and not expecting too much too soon.

22nd November 2020 at 1:08 pm #170634Nil, from Jose’s perspective it isn’t his fault, he does exactly the same thing for three seasons, two of them work the third it falls apart. He’s not done anything different but the result is, in his mind he’s done everything the same so the fault must lie elsewhere….Pagan

22nd November 2020 at 1:10 pm #170636I’ve seen jose use that exact same set up many many times with Real Madrid and chelsea when they were in their prime.
Jose had akways said, the more you have off the ball, the more likely you will make a mistake. He’s the best defensive coach around ad nine had eluded to. In his first two seasons with Chelsea, they were brilliant going forward and an exciting team.
I think things turned sour when he stated to go a bit negative.
He’s one of the best managers the game had ever seen. As nine says, it’s all great when he’s winning. I don’t think he’s changed one bit. If things go wrong, he will no doubt turn in the players and none of it will be his fault.

22nd November 2020 at 1:24 pm #170637Pagan, I don’t think that would be lost on Jose if true. The more I think about it he is the manager elite clubs desire, they all want instant success and will sack the coach to save face in a heart beat. I think Jose,s approach is calculated to maximise his returns in the time he will be allowed and to hell with the mid to long term. Dont blame him, if the clubs want different they should act differently, look what happens at clubs like pool when top managers are given time.

22nd November 2020 at 1:27 pm #170639442, interesting to see how Chelsea get on in the next few weeks. They have had a nice run of fixtures but you still have to beat what is front of you. Some big players still to come back
All very positive at Chelsea these days. Clean sheets now which is a massive plus

22nd November 2020 at 1:36 pm #170640Pagan, interestingly enough whilst we’ve been discussing this particular subject on here, I’ve been catching up on MOTD from yesterday and saw the Jose post match interview; he mentions something about some clubs needing 5 years and 5 transfer windows. Not sure if he was trying to make some kind of point, but for me and based on Liverpool’s history over the last 30 years, it’s better for a Manager to be allowed time of a 5 year period to try and build something.
I’m happy Pep’s committed himself to City which would take his career to 5 years (possibly a rebuilding job). Naturally of course, it comes down to the Owners and the CEO’s in charge but it’s refreshing to see when the Manager does want to commit even though there are difficult times and things aren’t always going for you. That’s where Jose lacked for me as a Person and a Manager.

22nd November 2020 at 1:46 pm #170641Nil, Jose has always committed himself to big clubs, he always signs a contract extension after season two, it falls apart in the next season, he gets sacked and then walks away with five years money for three years work. To be honest it’s a great business model if you can keep pulling it off…..Pagan

22nd November 2020 at 1:49 pm #170642Lucky, we’ve yet to see the long term with Liverpool, Klopp has done the building and the success has come, we are yet to see if he can be ruthless with the players that have served him so well and he has developed bonds with when they start to go beyond there use by date….Pagan

22nd November 2020 at 2:03 pm #170644Pagan thats true mate and time will tell with klopp, point is when have you seen Jose go more than a season without a trophy at a club and not come under ridiculous pressure? Only natural thst he would therefore only focus on the now, given different circumstances maybe we see a different Jose.

22nd November 2020 at 2:06 pm #170645Lucky, equally when have you seen Jose go to a club that doesn’t want immediate success, he’s the go to man for the we want it now club…..Pagan

22nd November 2020 at 2:10 pm #170646Sean, you may well have seen him set Madrid up like that but that doesn’t change the fact that his Madrid side still hold the points AND goals all time la liga record. All while being up against arguably the best club side ever.
Found it really interesting to read Xabi Alonso’s take on Pep vs Mourinho. He said something like “under Pep we controlled the ball more but we always controlled the game under Mourinho, too. Just less so with the ball”. Will try to find the actual quote

22nd November 2020 at 2:12 pm #170647In Jose’s tenure at Chelsea in his third season at Chelsea he won the League Cup and the FA Cup but there were signs then that things were beginning to unravel and he left in the September of his 4th season.
We only ever get to see Jose on TV imagine working up close and personal with him for three years and how difficult that may be I think that’s why he never really goes past three seasons..
Anyway to put the “are Spurs title contenders” debate to bed MOTD all 3 of the MOTD pundits concluded that Spurs are contenders. Chelsea too! That’s good enough for me Tommy!😊
On a serious note in respect of Chelsea I think they could be in the mix of title contenders as I think they will get better in the second half of the season as the new players develop into a team but it’s probably a year or two too early yet.
Settling 6 new players into the team under a Rookie PL Manager who imo has done really well since he’s been managing Chelsea isn’t easy hopefully all can grow and develop together over the next couple of years. .
Personally I would settle for third place right now but even that won’t be easy.
Anything else would be a massive early bonus but we’re on the march.😊

22nd November 2020 at 3:00 pm #170650Jose is the light that shines twice as bright but burns half as long. But he’ll always have success because football is ultimately won by the team that makes the fewest mistakes and has the strongest mentality regardless of the type of football played. And that’s what he coaches best – mentality and focus. Would be a great story for Jose if he did it with Spurs…his ego would go through the roof mind. He may even get his first statue 😂

22nd November 2020 at 3:08 pm #1706519, yes it took three and a half seasons in his first tenure at Chelsea, but since then he has honed his three season system and now has it off to a fine art….Pagan

22nd November 2020 at 3:09 pm #170652Absolutely, Mikus. He’d be unbearable!
This was the comparison I was talking about from Xabi Alonso. Quite an interesting take from someone who achieved so much under both managers
