Conte might not be the manager that most Utd fans will want but I tell you this, the man will get something out of that squad. I bet Ole being fired would be a huge relief to most, even if they’d maybe prefer other managers.

26th October 2021 at 6:24 am #187346I said it at the time when Poch was sacked that they should have gone straight for him. Still can’t quite believe Ole survived after that

26th October 2021 at 7:20 am #187347I believe Zidane has very poor English so that could cause an issue. I’ve read and please do not shoot the messenger that Utd could consider an interim manager like Carrick before going for Southgate when his England contract is up. Seems a bit far fetched to me as his contract is up after the world Cup next year and that is some way still. Plus I can’t imagine utd fans happy seeing 5 at the back plus 2 DMs every week!

26th October 2021 at 7:50 am #187349It wouldn’t surprise me if there was to be another interim manager Threeps but I’d be amazed if that was to wait around for Southgate. If they wait for anyone, it would be Ten Hag I think, as he’s probably the least likely to come mid-season.
Zidane looks unlikely now so it looks like Conte or an interim then reassess in the summer. The main thing being that they actually act now and don’t prolong the inevitable.

26th October 2021 at 7:53 am #187350In fact, Rafa is the same odds as Southgate at 33/1. That tells you how likely that is to happen! π

26th October 2021 at 8:29 am #187351The Athletic running this morning with the story that Ole is safe for now. Comical, it really is. 0-5 at home to our biggest rival.

26th October 2021 at 9:23 am #187353Donβt get the poch stuff he did okay at spuds but wasnβt great didnβt win anything even with hk and son at their peek
He has failed at PSG IMO and is struggling to deal with the names and egos
Donβt think Man U would be a great fit for him at all
He would be great for Newcastle to build something tho

26th October 2021 at 9:37 am #187354Lucky, that’s why some of us felt cautious. Normally, it’s not a nice place to visit or the fixture in itself as United raise their game.
Could have been perhaps a different outcome had Fernandes scored.
To be fair, it doesn’t really help Ole’s cause when there is a lot of media attention from former players and Ferguson himself. Neville’s of late has gone in deep. It’s the territory we’re in making time and allowing more coverage rather than letting the dust settle.
It’s almost as if, there’ll be a constant postmortem until United play and win their next game. I do think there needs to be a reshuffle in the starting line-up and give different players an opportunity.

26th October 2021 at 10:12 am #187355Agree about Poch Steve. Only he could fail to win a one team league like they did last season and even lost their version of the Community Shield, the first time for ages PSG had not won it. He belongs in the Rodgers, Bielsa, Wenger (second half) category. Nice football but not a winner. There are very few who do both, such as Klopp and Pep, these days so I guess you kind of have to step into one of the categories (nice football vs trophies) and hope the other comes as a result.
Conte (& earlier Mourinho) certainly is the other extreme where you pretty much guarantee trophies but have to play quite dull football.
That’s why someone like Ten Hag is very appealing to me. He may totally flop but he has a history of both nice football and trophies albeit at a much lower level. They’ve been pretty solid in the CL though to be fair.

26th October 2021 at 10:15 am #187356That’s not to say Poch, Wenger 2.0, Rodgers and Bielsa etc don’t win things. Poch will no doubt win the French league. Wenger won the FA Cup a few times even when he was past it. Rodgers won the Scottish league and the FA Cup. But there’s a difference between winning things and being a winner. None of these are going to consistently win titles when up against good competition. They’re just not born winners like Conte, Mourinho, Pep etc.
It’s also not to say Conte, Mourinho etc don’t ever play nice football. They do. It’s just secondary to winning. Mourinho’s early Chelsea sides were incredible teams and exciting to watch. Conte’s Inter scored tons of goals last season too. But winning comes first for these.

26th October 2021 at 10:23 am #187357Ed, Chelsea when they won the title under Conte in his first season scored 85 goals which was more goals than under Fergie in 11 of his 13 United title winning seasons. I get the appeal of Ten Hag but he’s another risk imo the job might be too big for him.

26th October 2021 at 10:28 am #187360Ed@10:15am exactly why Conte is the best choice for United. It may not last longer than a couple of seasons but he would sort United out.

26th October 2021 at 10:38 am #187362As a 4 of Varane, Maguire, AWB and Shaw, I’d take Utd’s over Chelsea’s. Liverpool and City’s are better though IMO. Chelsea are much better defensively coached though so are obviously performing much better as a unit.
As for Conte’s Chelsea scoring so many Nine, that’s great for one season, but they weren’t particularly entertaining from memory. Didn’t Lucky say on here it was like watching paint dry in his second season? That doesn’t scream entertainment to me π

26th October 2021 at 10:47 am #187363Even worse than watching paint dry, pulling teeth it was π See below. Yet Chelsea fans are enjoying the ride being in contention for things despite the style of play of Tuchel and Conte before him. I think we all would, though, in fairness. As long as it delivers results, we’re all fine with our sides being less entertaining.
We havenβt played with 2 supporting lukaku for weeks nine. I hope the 532 is not here to stay as just like in contes second season watching us like pulling teeth at the moment.

26th October 2021 at 10:51 am #187364Blimey, you lot of cyber warriors still bashing Poncho… shame on you all… π
Being a Spud, I do wonder what might have happened if a bit cash was splashed after the 16/17 season, instead of being hamstrung for a couple of seasons with no signings and playing at Wembly etc… (not something that all the apparent ‘geniuses’ mention over the last few posts have ever faced in any of their stellar careers. I mean, let’s face it, Pepe would have been fooked, for starters!).
I know you lot love him as much as I love YooUtd (and Buffy), but I’d take him back in a heartbeat, now the stadium is sorted, the revenues streams are starting to kick in, and the purse strings are loosened a hell of a lot more than they were for most of Poncho’s previous reign.

26th October 2021 at 10:58 am #187366Chucky, give over π. He had an embarrassment of riches at PSG and still failed to win the league. How many times have we heard “Well if he had the budget that guy had, imagine what he’d have won”. It’s a theory been tested many times. Moyes was in a very similar position as Poch. Bouncing around 4th/5th and always overperforming with smaller budgets vs his rivals. Gets a huge job with a massive budget and falls flat on his face. It’s no coincidence Moyes is now thriving again with a club with lower expectations, as I’m sure Poch would, too.
