12th November 2020 at 5:44 pm #170156AnonymousNine, I may have missed where someone was blaming the broadcasters but for me it’s more about the footballing bodies. It is their organization, they have a duty of care. The broadcasters would show a match as often as teams are willing to play but the various footballing bodies have got to be responsible and the first thing for me is to chop this Nations League crap but they wanted a way to spice up international friendlies, so they invented this nonsense tournament. In normal times you’d say well they were going to play them anyway but as you likely remember, I was always in favour of playing fewer of these matches… Now though, it isnt just my own personal preferences, it’s needed and for them to just plow on through shows that they only care about money.
Easy for me to say because I’m not getting any, perhaps but I can be more objective than them it seems.
Someone asked why all these players are getting injured, it is down to fatigue. A lack of a proper summer and then pre-season has players jaded and when you’re jaded, you make mistakes. There must surely be a term for the breakdown of dexterity that you get from fatigue but I don’t know it. This leads to picking up these freak injuries, in my opinion anyway.
It’s awful for Liverpool but we have the new LB, i think he’s been in full training a while again, maybe Robbo comes over to play the RB til Trent is back and we’ll hopefully get a few games out of Matip before he gets injured again. As we talked about before, Fabinho is coming back and the 2 youngsters have a game each under their belt. Let’s not forget Milner, who I’d say would be ok at CB if we were desperate. We still have Alisson!
So, it’s damn hard to be positive about things ATM but even our threadbare defence feels like it’s got SOME adequate cover. The biggest worry there for me would be the youngsters. They each had a very good game previously but if things were to unravel for them, they might get obliterated by a decent PL attack.
We’ve still got the 4 lads and Thiago to bail us out of some problems though but ya, they’ll be up against it now alright.
I will say one thing about Gomez, I think he got lucky in a way. The injury is not to the tendon that he injured a few years ago. It didnt damage the ligaments around it either. So, while it’s obviously taking him out for half the season, he will be back long before it’s over, so that’s just something semi positive for him.

12th November 2020 at 6:23 pm #170157International football weeks is a unique problem for football, other sports manage it far better, but they can as they have other rules to enable them to do so. Take cricket, if there’s an international during the season, the counties just lose those players involved and the season just carries on, this system doesn’t compress the season and force teams to play the seasons games in less time, it also doesn’t over play the international players as they don’t play extra games, the other thing it does is it levels the playing field between the top and bottom clubs by weakening the top clubs for the periods of time the international matches are played. I don’t know what happens with rugby but I don’t think the league stops for international breaks. Cricket is able to do this as they limit the number of overseas players a county can register, so an international series only takes a few players out of the game, football because of the amount of players from different nations playing in the Premier League can’t do this most of time, the big exception being the African Cup of Nations, it may be possible to do something similar if European internationals were a constant event being staggered across the entire season and not all countries playing at the same time, this would probably give an extra 3 or 4 weeks of season time and wouldn’t see international players playing excessive games…..Pagan

12th November 2020 at 6:31 pm #170158I agree with nine mak mate. I want to watch football all the time but the internationals are crazy now.3 games played the last time. Nearby two ganes a week at club level and the euros in the summer
It is a bit crazy and players really are going to get burnt out.
No proper pre-season etc. Crazy stuff that

12th November 2020 at 7:24 pm #170159AnonymousPagan, that’s an interesting take on it now alright. The top clubs would lose most of their first team if it werent staggered but, if you did stagger it and set some kind of limit on the amount of international players who can be called from a club at any one time then there could be a way to maker that work.
For example, if you said that each club could lose a max of 3 players per match, with internationals staggered also, it might be feasible. It would get clubs to utilize their squad more and would maybe do the same with international sides. There might be weeks where they’d have to look at another option for a position and give someone a chance.
Sean, I also want to watch as much football as they can show but of course I am only interested in club football. well, mostly anyway. I’
ll watch the WC etc but all these friendlies!.. and you could probably shorten the qualification rounds also. They play a lot of matches when you add them all up.Instead of the Nation Cup, I’d prefer to watch Liverpool play and I think most people agree but I know many don’t. Some prefer international football and that’s fine.

12th November 2020 at 7:40 pm #170160Mak, or clubs could take the decision not to load themselves with players of one nationality apart from their own, if any said team has more than as you say 3 home nation players missing then the league should let them move a game. I do think clubs do this already in regards to African players…..Pagan

12th November 2020 at 8:05 pm #170164Mak, as I indicated in my posts I questioned the Nation Cup games given how the season is so condensed as well as the number of international friendlies particularly this season.
Liverpool have been particularly hard hit by injuries and it’s very unfortunate they’ve lost both Centre Backs to injury however Van Dijk’s injury wasn’t down to over use and I’m not sure Gomez’s was either it sounded like a very unfortunate accident to an area where Gomez has suffered injuries before.
Easy to be wise in retrospect but Klopp seemingly got it wrong in not replacing Lovren in the Summer leaving Liverpool light at Centre Back with seemingly two of the recognised Centre Backs in Matip and Gomez potentially injury prone too.
Be interesting to see how Klopp reacts I’m not sure he’ll panic buy in January and pay over market value for a Centre Back or buy anyone who he doesn’t think is a long term answer and January is notoriously a very difficult window to buy the players you really want.
There are no easy games in the PL but the fixtures up to January aren’t as tough as they could have been and the trickier matches are all at home.
I think Sean’s right Liverpool aren’t favourites for the PL title now but I wouldn’t write off their ability to retain the title as challenging at that might be now.

12th November 2020 at 9:13 pm #170165AnonymousAll good posts lads.
Ya, if we do business, it’ll likely be a loan, or a player that we couldn’t afford to get in the summer. Nine, it’s definitely not hindsight for a lot of Liverpool fans, TBH I’d say most were calling for a CB and I do think Klopp had someone liked up. Things change though and I guess at some stage we heard about Thiago being available and made our move. This is all my own guess-work here and it might be some other scenario but one way or the other, I do think we plan to replace Lovren. In City’s situation Pep was moving Fernandinho back to CB, in our case Fabinho is only good at covering it.
If my above idea is in any way near what happened and you told me we could have 2 of 3, i would have picked these 2… or at least in hindsight, we could not let either of them slip through our fingers. The CB could have waited had we not been extremely unlucky.
Nine, Van Dijk’s injury definitely had nothing to do with fatigue but I would say there’s a reasonable chance that in Gomez’s case, that it was a factor. It’s my own weird opinion that you pick up these freak injuries more when you’re fatigued. Could be pure bad luck, not saying it wasnt.
As for Trent, I definitely put that down to fatigue. He’s not at all injury prone and was pretty well run down at the stage it happened. When I used to play football (not for a team but we played a lot), I would pick up loads of little injuries but the fitter you are, the more resilient you get to them. Liverpool had a particularly poor pre-season, due to us having to play the charity shield way before the PL actually kicked off.
Anyway, it’s a great discussion but I think I’ve talked it to death for now. Us Liverpool lads have just got to look forward to seeing Thiago again. TBH, I have rarely been so excited about a player, after seeing his game and a half for us or whatever it was, so far.

12th November 2020 at 9:43 pm #170167More illustration, based on Utd, as to how dire football finances have become. Utd first quarter revenue, not surprisingly down and showing a loss of £30m. Equivalent quarter last year showed a profit of £1m
I reckon most clubs are in the same relative position. Utd can live with this butthere is no scope for big transfers without sales. Same for Madrid and Barca. Utd financing costs increased by £10m (enormous) As I said this shows the state of football finances and is worrying if reflected down the pyramid..Hence the desire to play for TV regardless of the health consequences. A good arguement for 5 subs?PS Ed not getting at Utd. Just looking at current published data for tbe “richest” club at the top of the pyramid

12th November 2020 at 11:10 pm #170172I can resonate with those thoughts on Internationals. Honestly found something else to watch after a minutes in posting my thoughts on the other thread. There’s simply no motivation for me. If it’s an actual Tournament like the Euros or the World Cup, then a different story.
The Domestics we watch it’s because it’s a team we follow and there’s a motivation for 3 points and climbing up the ladder, as with Cup Competitions.
Just don’t have the attention span.

13th November 2020 at 1:12 am #170173AnonymousWell funnily enough now Nine, you can afford it. Liverpool are going to be back to 3 years ago when we were great for neutrals because of our then uber attacking style of play, with a defensive setup that can barely cover the goals scored in offense.
Now, I am just being funny but of course, this may well be forced upon us, to some extent. Instead of lamenting the defence though, Im going to try and enjoy what we still have and Thiago returning, on top of Jota setting a pace that he will never be able to keep up… but I think he’ll do well here.
anyway, Im just realising how tired I really am. Gonna call it there NN lads

13th November 2020 at 8:11 am #170177Mak, I said after the Everton game that Liverpool looked like a Rolls Royce going forwards but even then before the injuries there were signs that things weren’t quite right defensively.
I think it will be a challenge for Liverpool defensively but the Rolls Royce was back for the first 25 or so minutes v City indeed it looked turbo charged to me 😊 and there are few if any who can challenge Liverpool offensively in the PL currently and that will be an enormous help in coping with the loss of Van Dijk and Gomez and if you could sign a quality Centre Back in January that would somewhat nullify the loss of Van Dijk and Gomez.
Funnily enough Liverpool had looked strong defensively even without Van Dijk and I thought he would have been a much bigger miss for you than he has been to date unfortunately losing Gomez puts even more pressure on the defensive side of Liverpool’s game.
Nothing wrong with winning your games 4-3 though and it will make you every neutrals favourite team to watch.
Thiago is my kind of player and I hope he’s back soon strutting his stuff all over the pitch.
I wouldn’t wish injuries on anyone but your bad luck with them this season could make the PL title race a bit closer and a bit more exciting.
I really feel for Gomez though the lad has already lost a CL Final and a World Cup Finals to injury and the suggestion is that he could struggle to be fit for the Euro Finals in the Summer, fingers crossed he’s back before the end of the season. Cheers 9’s.

13th November 2020 at 9:00 am #170179I think in light of events unfolded with the 2 injuries, the talking points have leaned effectively all to one side, ala Liverpool.
We’ve done well from our first block of games. We’ll need to wait and see how the next batch of fixtures unfold and where we are then and how soon will players be on the mend.
Maybe due to no games since and not having to play till the 21st, perhaps this has all turned in being over thought and analyzed.
Time and a bit of patience is going to be needed until then.

13th November 2020 at 11:14 am #170180Nil, “Maybe due to no games since and not having to play till the 21st, perhaps this has all turned in being over thought and analyzed.”
Nil re the above Liverpool are the Champions they are looking to defend their title and they’ve just lost both first choice Centre Backs to long term injuries.
As per Manchester City last season in similar circumstances people will wonder and debate what impact that may or may not have on the title race.
I sense from your statement above you may not be comfortable with that but it goes with the territory of being the defending Champions.
